Yeah, the Giants were 13 games out and came all the way back... because they cheated. They had some guy in the outfield stealing signs and relaying them back to the field. The players admitted to it 50 years afterwards.
The Giants player who appeared to "attack" Leo Durocher was Willie Mays. Willie was a 21 year old rookie and was the on deck hitter. In addition to managing the Giants, Durocher was also the 3rd base coach. Willie was so overjoyed that he went for the first Giant he could find to give him a bear hug, and that was Durocher!
