I have a video on my page where I captured a bolt almost like this one. The little pink bolt you see is a positive streamer. It's nothing to mess around with!!!
What you see before the large bolt of lightning is called a step leader, It is common to see more then just one of these just before the strike. These people were extremely lucky not to have been killed. If that step leader would have made contact with the lightning,it looks like bolt of lightning would have landed right at there feet. WOW !!! What a great video shot. You guys where so lucky
yer but in spain when it rains, it RAINS, proper heavy, li live in moraira, but on the day if you put a 30m bueckt outside over 2sq mts, it wuld have been half full, tht much rain fell, it was the 2nd worst storm in European History since
@westhamjames i was in moraira in august on holiday and one day it proper bucketed it do and the road i was on just turned into a river and there was a drainage pipe hanging out and water was gushing out of it for ages but my god it was bloody good to watch
The "pre-strike" is also known as phantom lightning, the lens of your camera reflects some part of the lightning thus looking like it strikes just in front of you - on film.
YOU idiot; did you not see the strike before, which APPEARS to hit IN FRONT of the railings. As if you called him an idiot for saying it appears... grow up (:
WAIT I totally said that wrong, you are an idiot because you haven't looked closely enough at the recording. The PRE-STRIKE before the one that is like miles away.
LOOK OUT FOR THE PRE STRIKE!!! that's what I said.... COULD BE A TRICK OF THE LIGHT.... I don't know if it was like just in front of us...You're the idiot for not reading what I said
@dgr2544 I don't know but I think the "pre strike" looks close due to the light doing something to the camera. You don't see it in real but you see it on film recorded by cameras so I think that's pretty much correct.
Anybody willing to correct me please do it will be interesting to read :)

There are hundreds of examples of these "pre-strikes" on YouTube and they're all caused by a ghosting effect within the camera.
It's a nice capture of a CG, though. Through the rain you can just make out the pole or mast on the hill that it strikes.
