Ive owned 5 Golf gtis + a couple of drivers and they are great great cars, I just got old and boring and bought a BMW but looking forward to a point when I can afford to buy 1 as a second car.

For the record I drove a mk2 driver for a couple of months last year and it cost £170 fully comp, def an option for younger drivers, well nippy for a 1.6.

Oh yeah Clarksons hair is rather nuts, he's got taste though car wise.

Mk4 4 stars - you must be joking?! OK, it was well-built but the GTI was nothing more than a badge exercise.

The Mk2 drove better than the MK1 and was arguably the best GTI of them all, although GTI purists would argue in favour of the MK1.

As for the MK6 being better than the MK5 - it's essentially the same car with a newer engine. Many (including myslef) prefer the MK5 - better looking, better specified and better built; the MK6 was the result of a cost cutting exercise by VW.

In england car is a luxury item thise days fuel road tax and insurance makes it so expensive to run so anyone under 25 got to be well rich to afford one.Cars are cheap to buy but keep it on the road is a diffrent story.Sometimes you have to pay 5 or 10 times more for insurance than car itself

my point being if your younger than 25 these days you have no hopes of insuring anything with a gti badge cheaply.

It didn't have 90bhp, it had 112bhp but only weighed 800kg giving it a power/weight ratio of 138bhp/ton. To compare, a mk4 Golf 1.8t puts out 150bhp but only manages 125bhp/ton.
