Well I think you know what you did wrong by now. Great that it was caught on camera so you can analyse your mistakes thoroughly. I am sure you appreciate that it was not the groundsman's fault as ultimately the climber should have foreseen that this could happen with the way it was rigged, his position and choice of cuts. Very good of you to post this as there is more to be learnt from this type of video than from 95% of the other "instructional" clips on youtube! Glad your OK.
There was too many raps on the capston, it didnt flow, we tried to let it pass neil but it jammed. We all fucked up here. Ihave some pics of his back afterwards, there not good lol
I'm sorry guys but I find it a little disturbing that the Groundsman is getting grief for this, I bet he feels like crap for what happened but to suggest its him to blame is to harsh.
Glad to see the climber is still ok, blimey this could have been loads worse. Good to see there are loads of helpful know it alls out there, more concerned with being right (and patting themselves on the back) instead of offering advice. We've all had little wake up calls in this industry, if not maybe as scary as this. I hope this helped to gel this tree team together abit more because we all have to be switched on when doing this work, its never just one persons fault, its a team effort.
Ha, at least the comments have not completely slated me! There were a few factors involved in causing this accident, we were rushing the job, the groundie kept telling me take take each chog bigger and bigger, and really I should have known best. Lesson learnt, I now take much more care when rigging timber in this way!! For the record yes it did hurt an awful lot!!!
I see a few comments here have placed the blame on the ground crew, unless the groundcrew are supposed to be teaching him how to do it then the only person at fault is the climber, he made a poor decision and obviously was a little out of his depth, from the start his positioning was poor with the saw, and his choice to top rope a piece so big with the rig anchor above his head is well........
Please fix the title so that there is a reference to "top roping". That will make the video easier for folks to find and more people will learn from it. Even the best arborists make dangerous mistakes some times. If you work in trees, watch this video frame by frame so that you don't repeat the mistakes this climber and his crew made. Thanks for posting the video.
@Hisslave1 Why the ground crew did nothing wrong, the climber made a very poor decision i mean for god sake the rigging point was above his head where did he think it would go. If the groundcrew let it run faster it could of been worse for the climber, sorry but only one person to blame here i hope he learns.

Tie point higher up way past the balance point so comes down butt first.
Pull off rope to give some control and assistance.

I blame the groundie. He is responsible for letting the load run. Let's the climber get hit twice,???? Fired!

Accidents like that happen to the best of us I think, just shows you gotta be 100% focused on what your doing 100% of the time in this career.
