I grew up with the Lefty Frizzell version of this song and i still feel that version captures the feel of this song the best. When I decided to record this song myself I was amazed at how many people have recorded it including Mike Nesmith from the Monkees. I actually liked his version very much. Stop by and check out my attempt at singing this great old ballad sometime.
Can't people just enjoy the songs at youtube without complaining about who is better? Can't you just appreciate free good music streamed into your house?
@BlakiepooTube I'd like to hear those opinions backed up with 'why' someone thinks one version is better than another--then it would be a discussion, not a disagreement?
Make DAVE MATTHEWS watch this cut - or, better yet - make him STOP COVERING material that's out of his league. This is how to perform and how to revere ' Long Black Veil '.......don't disagree unless you know the definition of REVERE
I think all the different version are interesting...how many different takes on the song there could be...I think this version sounds a lot like Country Roads, in regards to the style...I think Dave's is the best version (which is weird, cause Springsteen does a cover as well, and I usually think his versions are the best).
Except that he had already acheived massive success in the UK and released the hightest selling album in Ireland's history...sooooo.....Dave Matthews didn't really discover him
Leftys version is the absolute best, and no way did Johnny Cash, with his lousy voice, come close. I think Merle Haggard could have done a great version.
The Song was written by a man by the name of Danny Dill in 1959, with the help of someone called Marijohn Wilkin, who actually played the piano on the original recording by Frizzell
I personally like this quite alot, as for the first one to make this a hit as so many have recorded this, try Lefty Frazell in 1959. I think the Dave Matthews version lacks enthusasim if you really wanna know. This one is fun. But I have never been a fan of Dave Matthews.
Actually it appeared on a Johnny Cash album before the band did it. But it was recorded by other artist before either of them did it. Dave Matthews does the best version of it, i think.

All versions of Long Black Veil owe a debt to Left Frizzell.

It was written in 1958 or 1959 by Danny Dill with music by Marijohn Wilkin. First recorded by Lefty Frizell and later covered by many, many artists.

Actually, Lefty Frizzell's version is the best, and the original. Eff Dave Matthew's Band.

Dave Mathews and Emmy Lou Harris did a great take on this song. As for that nodding Welsh prick. He has'nt a clue.

Dave Matthews Band's version is so much better, and more atmospheric, in my oppinion. The song gets so much more feeling from them.
Dave Matthews acctually discovered David Grey, how much does that suck?!;)

your fucking wrong this guy is doing it the way the song is intended to be played, not by gay ass dave matthew who has a big dildo up his butt

This is a Lefty Frizzell song. Don't know who wrote it. Bobby Bare did a nice version too. Johnny Cash is the only one come close to Lefty.

Not really a Johnny Cash song, though he made it famous. The Band had a version on their freshman album. Not too bad.
