Hi i love the fact that you use a electric chainsaw! so much nicer than the gas ones. i wore out a stihl saw with a timber jig cutting six x six inch logs. wood has been dried for a couple years now, and time to start building. i want to go with the dovetails, and have made a jig that uses a poney clamp. you mention that the jig refs from the timbers end but the new one does not. mine just clamps to the log lenght line of the timber needed. excess is cut off . have any pics of the new one?
thanks i live in europe we dont build houses out of wood so they dont need to teach us this at school, i felt dumb asking that question but thnx for the info
Not a dumb question at all. The furthest I have sent a jig was Austria. My relatives live in Denmark and they all live in brick and stone houses though I think they have wood and insulation in there somewhere.
Hey Cliff, no offense mate, but I live in Austria - Central Europe - and hardly anywhere else in the world timber houses/ classic carpentry has got more heritage than here... It's gettin bigger and bigger due to economic (insulation figures) reasons.
That is a great video and a great Jig. How much of a gap does it leave for chinking. Do you sell any of these jigs and if so I would be interested in one.
The design would not help you a lot. Welding it so the shrinkage happens to your benefit and not detriment is most of the trick. It took me about 20 of them before I got it right. I build and sell them. I would give you the dimensions for the template if you wish.
@lafarms Hello, my father is planning a log home and has cut the logs. We've been looking for a good notching jig and were impressed with your video. What would you charge to make a jig for 5"x10" logs with a planned 2" gap for chinking? wes.shofner@gmail.com
I would like to see the new jig that doesn't reference from the end of the log.

LA Farms...sell the sports car, sell the house and head for the mountains. Get a good stihl and steal toe boots. Thats where your heart is!

Hi Cliff, you build a house! This is actually a fairly small jig. This timber is 6" wide and 8" tall. I have make jigs for 24" tall and 12 " wide.
