Emissions come from the word Emit. The electric car does not emit anything.
That doesn't mean the energy that is put into the car does come from a place that does emit. Just that the car is not the emitting factor.
The "long tailpipe" argument is semantics. Like calling wind power, fusion power. Because the fusion of hydrogen inside sun causes the radiation that heats the atmosphere of the earth which then cause massive columns of air to move across the globe.
