  • I was at this show way back when. I just came across this concert. I knew about the who at Tanglewood video.I wasn't aware that Tull was also recorded. Thanks for posting!

  • Damn, listen to those vocals. Ian Anderson wins.

  • Glenn Cornick........smokin' . I'll bet this man knows his Bach.

  • Je pense que Jethro Tull est le groupe de rock progressif le plus original qui aie existé.

  • I have the FULL version of this song in my uploads, it is a SICK REMASTER. Thanks for this original version BR.

  • Tablecloth pants

  • John Evans is an intriguing pianist. The huge quotations from Appasionata (Beethoven) at the end suggest that Evan had a classical background. Celebrating Beethoven's 200th birthday indeed! Did this piece always have the Beethoven in there?

  • I'm goin back to the ones that I know, with whom I can be what I want to be....what a great line

  • Love you Ian!! Tull rocks!!

  • This just might be the best rock footage and performance I have ever seen. What a treasure.

  • THE very best line-up! Hands-down.. and without a doubt..... with respect to future members :-)

  • @margovallen I love his or there first LP ??? I didn't know of another then 2

  • @jczother Yes, Jethro Tull has had many members :-)

  • what

  • anyone know that's Beethoven?

  • @crabsyman Of course I know its Beethoven. I used to play Appasionata.

  • @ndogg20 that is THE dumbest comment ive ever read. i think YOU were stoned when you typed it.

  • @ndogg20 that is THE dumbest comment ive ever read. i think YOU were stoned when you typed it. by the way, drughead, its spelled improvIsation.

  • I'm going back to THIS ONE ...every once in a while... and remember warm sun and music and smiles and summer nights..

  • Tull was and will always be seen by history as the great of the great ! !

  • I love this song! So much of Tull's greatest music was made before I was even born!

  • was it john evans who said something like, 'i was the only one in the band without a beard. i was also the only one in the band who wasn’t particularly ugly.' ?

  • john evans was not only the best and most versatile keyboard player this band ever had he was probably one of the best if not the best keyboard players of his generation.

  • I was at this show. They stop the concerts at Tanglewood because the dirty hippies would not stop pissing on the poor rich people's lawns.

  • Best Tull song ever, from Benefit, best Tull album ever, bar none!

  • Clive Bunker = quite underrated

  • @banjoshua Glenn Cornick=also quite underrated

  • Tightest band ever!!!!!

  • NEVER EVER EVER DELETE THIS VIDEO!

  • Did anyone see the 1969 "Benefit" tour? -- I'll never forget how it opened...

There were like 20 guys running around on the stage setting up the equipment, all were wearing long Gray Trenchcoats... as the stage was being set up the numbers dropped from 20 to 12 to 5 and then they just turned around started playing... Shock Factor... this was also the concert where there would be a phone ringing in the back, and Ian would awnser it... and later Smash an Alarm Clock with a baseball bat... wild.

  • @MRG2112MGV

i saw them at randalls island stadium 7/17/70 doing benefit. one of the best performances ever. i had heard of the piece you described but they didn't do it there.

  • Are John Evan and Keith Emerson twins?

  • is it me or is this twice as fast as the originall?

  • Yes this was the best Tull Line-up. I completely stopped buying Ian's albums after he canned John Evans and Barrie Barlow in 1980. Any vestiges of the old Tull were gone. All the line ups since then have pretty much sucked! Wish there was a complete video of this whole concert.

  • @echo962 Check Wolfgangs Vault. They recently featured this entire concert as "download of the week". Although i couldn't find the video (yet) the audio is there.

  • @echo962 I agree, other than maybe the 'Roots to Branches" album. Check that one out. It's awesome.

  • Jethro Tull...An original!

  • Sorry, KingHellstrings. I meant Rick Wakeman was glorious! And, Glen Cornick used to live in LA. He's now back in England.

  • very nice piano work by John Evan here that was new at this time to the JT Band in 1970-fantastic song and live performance.

  • This clip is the best explanation of why I have been a loyal Jethro Tull fan for over 40 years! Still invigorating and interesting and versatile after all this time! They don't make 'em like this anymore!!

  • Knowing them is loving them forever

  • Love to see a re-master of this. Minus the clock.

  • First saw Tull in May 1971 in Philadelphia. Been crazy about them since!

  • "Songs From The Wood" tour. Best concert I ever sa!. 41/2 hours. All of Thick, Passion Play, Aqualung, Half of Songs, Benefit, Stand up, and some others. Simply amazing! John Evan was glorious! Hammond had the endurance of a Tour De France racer! Anderson pulled a stunt right out of the circus. He threw his flute up into the stage lights, and stood with his hand out, and without ever looking, the flute landed perfectly in his hand. The crowd went crazy!!!

  • @arklat Uh, Hammond left before the Songs From the Wood tour.

  • Best lineup!!

  • This is Jethro Tull !!!!

  • Tull rocks!

  • I agree about glenn , this live stuff proves it. he also does a killer job on bob welch's 1st paris album. where are you cornick?

  • @subsonic44 He's in LA.

  • Cornick was the best bassist playing for Tull!

  • genius then, genius now

  • John Evans was amazing!

  • saw them during this tour 7/17/70 at randalls island

    pop festival. NYC KILLER!!

  • Absolutely top dollar, great upload!!!

  • I don't know WHY SOMEBODY doesn't release this WHOLE Tanglewood show on DVD.

Tull AND The Who are SPECTACULAR!!!

  • bec his singing is not well..........maybe thats why and Ian is a perfectionist....or maybe those numbers are on tape! lol

  • Clive Bunker.....WOW!! 'Benefit' era Tull is and always will be, for me anyway, their shining genius.

  • When Ian split with Mick, this became the genesis of Tull. They will always be apart of history and never forgotten. I am certain Ian feels the same way.

What a great time to be alive and I was there.

Yes, I am 55 and listen to Tull today with the same respect, one would listen to Beethoven, Bach, Mozart....

  • Clive Bunker! How come the whole world doesn't know and hail yor skill!

  • OMG!! THERE'S my man!!! Ian: WHERE FOR ART THOU?

  • Love 'em

  • I just saw him at Foxwoods. I cant believe this guy still performs after 40 some years. And still dances around the stage.

  • t-tull at their best one of the top 5 songs why did john evan leave the band

  • I dont think John was too fond of the limelight and all the traveling!

  • not sure why evan left the group,u may be rite i'm gonna research this

  • Because Ian fired him along with David Palmer and Barrie Barlow if i remember well....

  • don't think palmer and barlow ever played together, and did'nt palmer become a female a few years back.Yikes!!!

  • they played together on the songs from the wood tour.and yes he is now dee palmer a female

  • That´s not true, Barlow left the band on his free will after Glascock´s death. And Palmer wasn´t fired neither.

  • Sorry, LEFT side of him.

  • In addition: if you look at the oldest pics of Ian on stage, like circa This Was, he doesn't bring his leg across his body but sort of just sticks it out awkwardly, to the right side of him.

  • i love the old songs best....don't you......Benefit album was true TULL.....

  • ....Know why he stands on one leg like that?.....'cause he has to pee. ; )

  • Ian tells that he read a review about him on stage and the reviewer stated something about him standing on one leg. He couldn't remember how or why this leg-up thing happened, reckoned it was an accident of some sort, like him trying to get something off his foot or something similar, so the next time he went out he figured he better do the leg-lift thing, seeing as a reviewer had mentioned it as part of his stage act.

  • Actually, I was making a rather stupid joke when I said he had to pee. I've also heard the explanation you've just given. The hypothesis I've had for years, comes from an illustration from my music appreciation class. In it, the famous violin virtuoso Paganini, of the 19th century (I think), is playing his violin, looking slightly deranged, with his left heel resting against his knee. When I saw that, I thought Ian was emulating Paganini.

  • Actually, that makes a lot of sense! That is, to say Ian's stage moves coming (consciously or otherwise) from Paganini, the "devil in Paris" as I recall from an old High Fidelity magazine article.

  • I wish bands today would make songs like this. With all the different movements and texture. Now they have songs where all the instruments play the same notes through the whole song. BORING!

  • Thanks for the upload. This is one of my favorite Tull songs. Benefit is a really fantastic album.

  • That was the year I saw them. Been a massive Tull fan ever since. Have to say it John Evan was outstanding. We always connect Ian and Martin but, Tull had some magnificent musicians over the years. Good old Tull.

  • Benefit...one of my essential albums. Early Tull was amazing. Great music, great showmanship.

  • Man, the drums are so great in this....

  • Damn sounds just as good as when I saw them live on acid.

  • I'll excuse the French on the grounds of your exquisite taste :)))))) ;))))))

  • Lol

  • Benefit 1970. An obscure album, fucking lovely! excuse the French! How this song brings back feelings!

  • It's too hard to see Jethro at tv here in Brasil...I saw just once at Mtv...and I lost my math class...

  • I agree, this video is obscure to be polite. The last time I saw it was on a TV station while living in Evansville, Indiana in the mid 80's on a TV show that played "underground music" after midnight. Been looking for it ever since. Thanks!

  • Blodwyn Pig/Wild Turkey. It seems every other month goes by, and I have a new favourite Tull album. Only bands like Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Man, Nektar, Yello, Eat Static, Pixies and Amon Duul 2 have that kind of variety, listenability and intelligence to keep me in rotation with pretty much all of their albums

  • What a line-up!

Ian, Martin and the ultimate rhythm section- Glenn and Clive... and always in the background until Benefit- John Evans

John Evans was THE BEST keyboard player this band ever had. Period.

  • @yoursaxman He definitely was! Especially during tracks like this one!

  • @yoursaxman And Glenn was the best bassist, although John Glascock (RIP) was very good too. Clive is fantastic at drums, but so is Barrie Barlow...it's a tie there, their drumming is so different from one anothers, yet both are brilliant.

  • @yoursaxman yes your bang on.

  • @yoursaxman agreed, john was excellent!!!!

  • check out jethro tull san diego 2008 youtube clip. they still are the best.

  • always loved this song by a classy guy, Ian

  • This is more obsure than a dark alley in Bangkok, when your'e high.

  • Man, John Evan was such a brilliant pianist. Love this song! There is a great HQ clip of them doing WYTTHM on the Beat Club TV show, with John really shining once again on his beautiful piano section. Still have it on an old VHS somewhere, hope someone else who has it can up it here.

  • If I'm not wrong, that part can be find on Tull's DVD "Jack In The Green". It contains their performance of this wonderful song.

  • Excellent band, Ive enjoyed their music since I first saw them in 1968

  • Fucking good stuff. A great band, a good era, good fashion, 'tis a shame and an embarassment that my generation has no musical talent

  • Probably one of the best concerts I ever saw was Tull during the Aqualung tour with Yes backing them up. Today's music just doesn't compare. Not even remotely.

  • Cliver Bunker was such an amazing drummer. I never cease to be impressed by his technique and good taste.

  • I saw Clive about 15 years ago in a club in London backing Mick Abrahams - as Blodwyn Pig. He was shit hot - as was Mick.

  • Soooo damn good!!! I love Benefit!! Jethro Tull 4 ever!! I've seen them in Doncaster, England 2001 and absolutely loves it!!!

  • This song has been one of my favorites, since 1969 when I first heard it, love this music..

  • I will love Tull until the day I die.

  • Awesome rarity. I love Benefit!

  • One of my favorite songs too.

  • una de mis canciones favoritas

  • These are brilliant vids ! Thanks for posting!

  • I dont know how much i would give for that coat:)

  • Oh my gosh! This is great quality (great compared to what I have :P ) Thanks a lot for uploading!
