John Evans is an intriguing pianist. The huge quotations from Appasionata (Beethoven) at the end suggest that Evan had a classical background. Celebrating Beethoven's 200th birthday indeed! Did this piece always have the Beethoven in there?

Always liked the studio version of this song, but this live version brings up a couple of points of that era the early 70s. One point is that people were so hyped up and druged out that they would sit through this boring ad-lib pseudo jazz improvasation and not complain. And two, despite what some older stoners may stay ,the music these days is so much better.Way better.
was it john evans who said something like, 'i was the only one in the band without a beard. i was also the only one in the band who wasn’t particularly ugly.' ?
john evans was not only the best and most versatile keyboard player this band ever had he was probably one of the best if not the best keyboard players of his generation.
Did anyone see the 1969 "Benefit" tour? -- I'll never forget how it opened...
There were like 20 guys running around on the stage setting up the equipment, all were wearing long Gray Trenchcoats... as the stage was being set up the numbers dropped from 20 to 12 to 5 and then they just turned around started playing... Shock Factor... this was also the concert where there would be a phone ringing in the back, and Ian would awnser it... and later Smash an Alarm Clock with a baseball bat... wild.
i saw them at randalls island stadium 7/17/70 doing benefit. one of the best performances ever. i had heard of the piece you described but they didn't do it there.
Yes this was the best Tull Line-up. I completely stopped buying Ian's albums after he canned John Evans and Barrie Barlow in 1980. Any vestiges of the old Tull were gone. All the line ups since then have pretty much sucked! Wish there was a complete video of this whole concert.
@echo962 Check Wolfgangs Vault. They recently featured this entire concert as "download of the week". Although i couldn't find the video (yet) the audio is there.
This clip is the best explanation of why I have been a loyal Jethro Tull fan for over 40 years! Still invigorating and interesting and versatile after all this time! They don't make 'em like this anymore!!
"Songs From The Wood" tour. Best concert I ever sa!. 41/2 hours. All of Thick, Passion Play, Aqualung, Half of Songs, Benefit, Stand up, and some others. Simply amazing! John Evan was glorious! Hammond had the endurance of a Tour De France racer! Anderson pulled a stunt right out of the circus. He threw his flute up into the stage lights, and stood with his hand out, and without ever looking, the flute landed perfectly in his hand. The crowd went crazy!!!
When Ian split with Mick, this became the genesis of Tull. They will always be apart of history and never forgotten. I am certain Ian feels the same way.
What a great time to be alive and I was there.
Yes, I am 55 and listen to Tull today with the same respect, one would listen to Beethoven, Bach, Mozart....
In addition: if you look at the oldest pics of Ian on stage, like circa This Was, he doesn't bring his leg across his body but sort of just sticks it out awkwardly, to the right side of him.
Ian tells that he read a review about him on stage and the reviewer stated something about him standing on one leg. He couldn't remember how or why this leg-up thing happened, reckoned it was an accident of some sort, like him trying to get something off his foot or something similar, so the next time he went out he figured he better do the leg-lift thing, seeing as a reviewer had mentioned it as part of his stage act.
Actually, I was making a rather stupid joke when I said he had to pee. I've also heard the explanation you've just given. The hypothesis I've had for years, comes from an illustration from my music appreciation class. In it, the famous violin virtuoso Paganini, of the 19th century (I think), is playing his violin, looking slightly deranged, with his left heel resting against his knee. When I saw that, I thought Ian was emulating Paganini.
Actually, that makes a lot of sense! That is, to say Ian's stage moves coming (consciously or otherwise) from Paganini, the "devil in Paris" as I recall from an old High Fidelity magazine article.
I wish bands today would make songs like this. With all the different movements and texture. Now they have songs where all the instruments play the same notes through the whole song. BORING!
That was the year I saw them. Been a massive Tull fan ever since. Have to say it John Evan was outstanding. We always connect Ian and Martin but, Tull had some magnificent musicians over the years. Good old Tull.
I agree, this video is obscure to be polite. The last time I saw it was on a TV station while living in Evansville, Indiana in the mid 80's on a TV show that played "underground music" after midnight. Been looking for it ever since. Thanks!
Blodwyn Pig/Wild Turkey. It seems every other month goes by, and I have a new favourite Tull album. Only bands like Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Man, Nektar, Yello, Eat Static, Pixies and Amon Duul 2 have that kind of variety, listenability and intelligence to keep me in rotation with pretty much all of their albums
@yoursaxman And Glenn was the best bassist, although John Glascock (RIP) was very good too. Clive is fantastic at drums, but so is Barrie Barlow...it's a tie there, their drumming is so different from one anothers, yet both are brilliant.
Man, John Evan was such a brilliant pianist. Love this song! There is a great HQ clip of them doing WYTTHM on the Beat Club TV show, with John really shining once again on his beautiful piano section. Still have it on an old VHS somewhere, hope someone else who has it can up it here.
Probably one of the best concerts I ever saw was Tull during the Aqualung tour with Yes backing them up. Today's music just doesn't compare. Not even remotely.
