Anyone else hear Brian Wilson? Not to show disrespect, just the way music progresses, it's a compliment this band is great and I have not heard this since probably when it first came out. Wonder if I still have the record.
I'm unhappy with the production choices on this one. For instance, it sound like the base is played on a keyboard.. most of the sounds are keyboards, even something that sounds a bit like a guitar. But even keyboard base? Isn't that a bit silly, when you have one of the most interesting bass players available in Colin? I like the album, but at times the sound of it is just a bit too artificial, and I think this track suffers from that.
@genglemt no, actually, those chords WERE played on guitar by andy. i've heard them unprocessed. BRILLIANT track; what-EVER it takes to get the job done is good in my books. in this case, GREAT...
This is top notch genius. This is one album that will go down in the annals of history as a top 50 of all time. If not then we are not humans and I'm listening to a Martin fart track. God I love these guys. Makes me smarter just listening. Peace!
@probrojeffro I'm an old guy grew up with the classics of rock and roll.there are three greats of all time no make that four The Beatles, Elvis Costello and XTC
@probrojeffro I'm an old guy grew up with the classics of rock and roll.there are three greats of all time no make that four The Beatles, Elvis Costello and XTC. The fourth one is everyone else you can name them.
There wouldn't have been most of rock and roll without the Nurk Twins, but that doesn't mean that there are not better bands than the Beatles. Pink Floyd comes to mind. And XTC. Both are far better than John and Paul. Too, there would not have been the Nurk Twins without the Beach Boys.
This song was written about an American fan who was trying to get Andy's attention, and kept coming around, even though he was married. Apparently they finally got together after Andy eventually did divorce his wife after years of disharmony. Such a beautiful song, one of my absolute favorites of XTC.
@TrixieinDixie interesting. I have this todd rundgren interview-from here on youtube, where todd says andy fought to keep this song on the record. apparently mr. rundgren didn't like the song.
@TrixieinDixie This is how sophisticated songwriting is done, in the metaphors and analogies. It's an axiom as old as dirt that what one suggests is as explicit as what they actually say, and that argument is best left for other spaces. The idea of building a story around the idea of space travel... the spacy production by Mr. Rundgren may or may not be an accident, but I know for sure it's my favorite song on Skylarking. Thanks for this interpretation, you are dead-on, man!
I'm gonna go and put it on me turntable right now. Hopefully i can find the right combination to open the lock that keeps it in complete safety so I can savour it's delightful melodies that are contained within ! Ballet for a raineeeey day..........
@mensamoo thats one of the things i love about xtc. they kind of throw away the textbook when it comes to song structures and melodies.such an inspiration.
This song is just amazing. Perfectly encapsulates everything that is wonderful about XTC: incredibly inventive arrangements and chord progressions, dizzyingly beautiful melody, dazzling wordcraft.
I was trying to learn the chords on guitar today: it's just *insane.* Sounds so simple, but it's so not.
I once fell in love with a girl because we both loved this album. The fact someone else recognized it as brilliant started things off. Great, great album. Thanks for posting.
@RDArtist81 I agree with @xyaqua and I'm not exaggerating. Lennon & McCartney wrote great, globally accessible songs but were also promoted worldwide, at a very opportune time in music entertainment history. The fact that I believed for 20 years that XTC were no more is a measure of their lack of exposure (desired? Maybe. Artistically uncompromising? Definitely).
i am with bluejacket on this one as a kid in high school in a small town bands like XTC opened the world up to me this album was one that could not get turned off till it had all been played
Not mine, my fave off Skylarking would have to be let's see, it's a bloody tough choice, Skylarking is such a good album but it'd be a toss up between Super Super Girl and Dying, and the winner goes to (drum roll, envelope passed to glamorous young woman who opens it clumsily) 1000 Umbrellas (puzzled audience) Huh?
what a body of work andy and co. have put out over the years. i REALLY cherish this album ...great post ..thanx

This song is the odd man out on Skylarking. I would have sacrificed this song for Dear God before Mermaid Smiled.

Andy partridge is as gifted and talented as Paul mcCartney and John Lennon combined, but with better taste than both.
And talk about staying power, i was listening to english settlement when i was in the army in the early 80's.
Drums and wire is their best early album.
