Great footage, a delight to see the Roses' as youths, chewing their faces off in a warehouse in Manchester somewhere. My all time favourite is Tragic Roundabout, Stone Roses forever.
Actually, judging by the lower ceiling, I think this was actually in a warehouse (the railway arch being a later gig) but still in the same area of Manchester. The Roses played two of four warehouse parties organised by Steve Adge and his brother Mark under the 'Blackmail Records' name. A Certain Ratio played one of the other parties and, I think Kalima another. I worked the door along with Chris Griffiths (who later became of of the Roses' road crew) as well as 'Kaiser.'
@katdavoo12 Yes, it's definitely Reni on drums. The bass-player was a lad called Pete (Gardner?) and the rhythm guitarist Any Couzens. I worked at this warehouse party as 'door security.' It was organised by Steve 'Adge' in a railway arch off Fairfield Street, Manchester (not far from the Star & Garter pub and Piccadilly station). I wasn't aware any video footage still existed until now.
just want to say this very camera angle is the one i shot of this gig for the stone roses. I was booked by Spirit studios by Steve Adge who was their tour manager the whole time they existed and was a greta keyboard player himself in his band Third Law. The flower shows (there were two of them were the first real warehouse parties in manchester, by the time of the second one (in a british rail warehouse near piccadilly the roses were already becoming legendary. Good times.
Well think about it! They obviously started out as a punk band... punk was huge in 1985 U.K. Punk Rock singing is not ever going to be "pretty". Although Henry Rollins wasn't a bad yeller.
Punk was dead in 1985!.....The Smiths were pretty big, The Housemartins were pretty big, the 1st wave of UK indiepop was at it's height....New Romantic bands like Spandeaux Ballet & Duran Duran were past their peak....but Punk was nowhere in the UK in '85.....and the stone roses were never a punk band.
oasis can suck my dick, they arent a patch on these guys and can you imagine how much liam watched ian before oasis formed he completely rips off his entire stage image
@welld123 Difference is Liam can sing whilst Ian Brown's live singing is shite. He doesn't even sound as good as a really crap pissed up karaoke singer.
@MrThreshold2009 Quite obviously Liam is the better vocalist. That isn't opinion, that is fact. Similar vocal styles, but Liam Gallagher can stay in tune, whereas Ian Brown is RUBBISH live, no matter how many token NME indie botter gesture awards he gets.
@bricktrainsoulja No, it's opinion. It is hypothetical reasoning and there is no way to prove such a consideration as fact. In my opinion, when you listen to the classic Roses material, Ian has a wonderful, angelic voice. All Across the Sands being a case in point. Live he could be very poor indeed; but so can any singer. I've seen clips of Brown singing pitch perfect live.
Gallagher, again in my opinion, has a horrible, raspy voice. Unfortunately Ian copied that on Second Coming.
@ScreenArtUK "shut up u fag and have it" - Asides from the vacuous homophobic slur, what exactly is "have it"? The Christmas dinner yesterday? Well, thank you, I did indeed "have it" and it was very nice.
Now, you've not even clarified what your argument point is here, which is incredibly fucking dense and the signs of an out and out narcissist with no intelligent quotient to back it up. Or, simply put, you are a pathetic, Grade A Cunt. Off with you.
@MrThreshold2009 The 'classic roses material' was recorded in a studio where you have umpteem takes, and general quality control. Live Ian brown is almost universally awful, even the best examples of his live vocals are still pretty bad in the context of other singers. Liam Gallagher is not universally awful live, in fact I've not seen any really awful performances, in person or by virtue of youtube, though i'm sure there must be a few. And if not fact, that is certainly common consensus.
@bricktrainsoulja Or what? Well I guess there isn't much I can do from my room other than say "shut up" to show I don't like your comment, it's just gibberish I mean read it again. Even the bests had bad live performances.
@tenaciousd1888 Its not gibberish. Its an a opinion written in near-perfect English, and one that I stand by. I hope you don't question people's opinions on the street by telling them to 'shup up', round here you'd get a smack in the mouth.
oh and to the moron who say oasis own these guys u better thank the stone roses ,, if it wasnt for these guys u would have no Oasis simple as ,, I WANNA BE ADORED
LOL! Quite the performance. Compare this to Ian's performance of the same song at T in the Park 21 yrs later in 2006, when the crowd sang it back to him. lol :P
Ian Brown's "singing" is totally shit live! Fuck me i've heard better singing emanating from the local pub on some run down manchurian council estate on karaoke night.
steve adge, roses tour manager used to hire out a wharehouse off british rail and call it the flower show to put the old bill off,you bourght a raffle ticket for the show then turned up some where to get directions of steve to find the place,..1st manc wharehouse parties......
