Was the sound generator one of those black blobs? It seems those are in every toy I disassemble and I don't know how to bend them.

Yeah. That blob is a plasticized wax that's put over the IC chip that controls all the sounds.

Mostly the best bends happen with the capacitors (brown wafer-looking things) and the resistors (multi-banded colors around a brown slug looking thing).
