  • Rommel is one of the best marshals.

  • Montgomery was one of the worst British generals to ever command an army.

  • No. No he wasn't. If he was then he wouldn't have won at Alam Halfa, El Alamein, Medenine, Mareth Line, Sicily and Normandy and beyond (Market Garden the exception).

Generals are not judged by the type of person they were but by what they achieved and Montgomery was one of the single most successful generals of WWII. No American general can equal his success rate, only Slim of the other British generals challenges Monty's success rate and only Vasilevsky and Zhukov of the Soviets equal it.

  • Monty wanted to keep the Allied forces together and clear Belguim and the Lowlands then succor the Ports at Antwerp and strike into Germany from there. By keeping the Allies together they could make use of the manpower and material superiority they enjoyed and be strong enough to fear no enemy.

Because Ike insisted on splitting the Allies up by national Armies with different tactical objectives he weakened the advantages they had, diluted his sides strength and prolonged the conflict.
