if you think about it spawn is quite revolutionary as a character (ok maybe revolution was over the top) i mean a african american anti hero, who kills his enemies he goes against almost all superhero conventions and its a independent comic.
he clearly took alot of influence for spawn from Heavy Metal(the comic) still though spawn is easily my favorate comic right now next to detective comics and walking dead
Yeah, the comparisons are pretty blatant. I had seen his prowler years back, before I had ever heard of Spawn, and I just thought that it was too similar.
i wouldn't say "blatant", afterall he was the one that gave spidey the "buggy eyes" in the first place. not to mention spawn's mask would could not be confused with spidey's, even if it was the same color you wouldn't confuse the two.
In my experience Todd, tried pushing Spawn so fast to be a house hold name. It got blown out of the water. I use to be a huge collector of Spawn. And now look what the figures are going for on ebay. hardly 4 dollars a figure with no bids..I was only 13-14 at the time, and Todd not once came to the Chicago comic-con to sign books..so disappointing not sure if he ever did, but from 95,96,97 not a chance. Never got my #1 issue signed.
im not a blatant todd basher, i have many of his works and admire them, especially his work at DC, but it is my honest belief that the spawn character lacked any of the chemistry or ingredients to be classic. ever. nice universe he created, but its far from iconic. household name? hardly. for a while there very popular, and kudos for that
As with others here, Spawn was always one of my favorites as well. I absolutely LOVED the HBO series, got it on dvd the first time around and bought the series again when they remastered it. The storyline is astounding and complex in the chaotic way that life is, and it uniquely forces the audience to consider the possibility that if Heaven and Hell were real, that they would probably be just as corrupt and bureaucratic and unpredictable as we've turned everything down here.
Spawn is such a great character. I've always admired Todd for his artistic and entrepreneurial abilities. When I was a child I wanted to be a comic book artist -- but I could neither write nor draw. It's great that he got to do what he wanted to do in life. I also think part of the appeal of his characters, what makes them so attractive, is their gravitation toward humanity. He's right. I'd give anything for the love of my life -- who doesn't know I exist.
superb interview blunty, and i dont know what you did differently but i had issues hearing Tod on part 1 of the interview and you seem to have fixed the issue. thanks much and keep them comming!
not unusual for the number of comments on an interview vid to be lower than is common on some of my others. this type of vid is less interactive, more traditionally "passive" entertainment, like "normal tv". The vid isn't about an "issue" that gets people all worked up with opinions, and Todd himself, while he will probably see this (he asked to be informed when it was live), it's not likely he'll join in discussions here in the comments section so people don't ask questions about the content
lol i now realize why there are so few comments here. ok so for a real comment wow blunty your really lucky to meet all these people. Must be cool bein a journalist.
I've always had a certain amount of respect for Todd McFarlane due to his stand on creative independence. I am not a fan of Spawn, (although I do like the character concept and his raison d'être) but I admire what Mr. McFarlane accomplished for the comics industry.
thumbs up if you searched for the gamer SpawN!

marvel's prowler is actually pretty similar to spawn only with a smaller cape and no chains...

and the fact that its a copy of spawn
FlashMob22 2 years ago
@FlashMob22
Not really a copy if Spawn was released in the 90's and Prowler was in the 80's/70's

He's better at creating toys than comics. Probably one of the worst comic artists in comic book history.

i wanna see a picture of this high school created spawn before Ill believe his cowl wasnt a blatant spidey rip off.

Spawn was one of my favorite comics when I was younger, still have most of them and a lot of the action figures I had of him somewhere.
The cartoon on HBO was quite good and very mature/adult oriented rather then usual cartoons.
I hope they make a new one ( I thought they were but I haven't heard anything about it in a long time).
