Remember being with my girl when in high school and in the dashboard lights listening to WKBW, Buffalo, NY as we were parked and making out. We laugh now at our class reunions that when a girl said "NO" that's what it meant. Both of us have moved on.
@zfleming44 . . . aside from this being a great song, and wishing I had learned to play the trumpet: as a teenager, I lived in western Ma., and we listened to WPTR in Albany. When it started to fade at night, WKBW came in loud and clear. I remember it well. How nice to read of your memory. Thank you and Beth Wishes!
I wasn't familiar with BK until I heard him in rotation on Pandora. Really like his distinctive sound, you can't mistake it. One touch he would use, not in every number though, is muted trombones punctuated by bass guitar. Definitely had the best arrangement of Sweet Caroline. Everything in perfect balance Creative, brilliant and sorely missed. Died so young, 56.
Ol Bert had a fairly large Beatle connection. he was the one that set up their very first recording when they backed up Tony Sheriden. They were officialy Tony Sheriden and The Beat Brothers. On that album you will hear the ONLY Beatles song with song credits to Harrison and Lennon.as songwriters. It was a very rare instrumental by the Beatles called Cry For A Shadow. Recorded in Hamburg before they even met Brian Epstein
Whitedovie, thanks for sharing your memories. You were a "daddy's girl" weren't you. I love to hear and see that. Only great dad's realize the beauty and value of their precious daughters. Their love and protection teaches our women to be the great gifts to us men. Semper Fi, Dovie. Ole Johnny B.
@pogomole you guys are old farts (6/30/61 here), remember we were born in the first "upside-down" year since 1881!! Great music from our era, love it.
This is so nice. Unfortunately they don't make 'em like this anymore. True to it's title, this song is great to listen to while walking at night when the snow is falling lightly and the air is crisp.
i work at the zoo and this song was playing the last day of the season. it brought tears to my eyes because being there brings me such joy. i wont be able to go back until april.
I began playing this song when I was 15. I was a trumpet player and played this at many dances throught the years. Some may be surprised to know that the trumpet player was not Bert Kaempfert. It was his band. The musician playing the trumpet was Charlie Tabor. This song was an oasis in a desert for trumpet players in 1960s and I was grateful but shocked the first time I hear this when it came on the radio.
Listening to this song brings to mind the old abandoned dance halls and how it must of been back in the '40s with people dancing and having a good time.
I can't find the right words! I'm just surprised that many people form lands too far away from where I live, and with very different culture and education, may experience the same feelings by listening to this beautiful melody. In my country (Mexico), they used to call it "El país de las maravillas, de noche", and it also brings wonderful memories and feelings to me and my family. Thanks a lot to who ever shared this song!!
This was on the Jukebox at the firehouse hall back in 1964-1969 where the town had Friday night Dances for us kids.. Unheard of nowadays.. It was always the LAST SONG of the night . Oh the Memories
Everytime I hear this song, I think of a classmate of mine who was the 1st trumpeter in the high school band. We played this song in a concert and he had the solo. He went out with all the girls I had a crush on. He died in Vietnam in 1968.
The first song I ever loved as a child, 'Wonderland by Night' remains to this day 'the' most beautiful trumpet I've ever heard. With Ferrante & Teicher's 'Exodus', it is proof positive that instrumentals (and I could list more) take a back seat to no voice in music history. If what passes as "music" today is any indication, society has gone tone deaf.
My deepest sympathy to you WhiteDovie. I too lost my dad 23 years ago and miss him terribly. May the happy memories of what you two shared help ease your pain.
Whitedove: I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my daddy 23 years ago but I still miss him terribly. This song brings back so many memories of my childhood. We can't go back in time but we can think back and this put smiles on our faces. Happy Memories everyone.
I graduated in '68...this and many like it were heard throughout our home when I was growing up. Songs like this sways me back to the happy days, when we found simple things to do for entertainment. Thanks for the good memories.
When I was in high school (graduated in '69)....the local theater would always play this song before the movie began. Hearing this puts me right back there in one of the seats...the beautiful brocade walls, the fountain drinks, the aroma of the popcorn!!!! This is such a beautiful song....I listen over and over....thanks!!!
Thanks for posting. Bert's "Wonderland By Night" is played with great frequency on AOL-CBS Radio on the "Beautiful Music" button. They play lots of other really good tunes from the sixties and early seventies, too!
I remember growing up listening to daddy play this over and over. He just loved it.
It brings tears to my eyes now because daddy went to heaven on Oct 27th, 2010. He taught me how to love music and through that music the memories of the love we shared will never ever die. Rest now daddy, I love you and will miss you...thank you for sharing this song....
@Whitedovie I remember this playing on the radio and Mom draging me out of bed to get ready for school I lost Mom 2 days before your Dad on Oct.25 2010 on her birthday. And yes we both miss them.
and this reminds me of when I was in 8th grade...sitting home on a winter night, watching it snow outside, and thinking about a new girl in town, wondering if she too was looking out the window too??? crazy stuff huh? funny how are minds and memories work at times. great song!
@beachbumdave I don't believe this.......When i was a little boy around 10 years old, my father who played the lead trumpet in the band at that establishment would let me sit with him (hidden and staying very quiet and still). Dad played this at the end of every Saturday Night's dance at the Wonderland Ballroom on Unley Rd at Unley. My father was an exceptional trumpet player and i have so many good memories of him playing.
Bert Kaempfert's big 1961 hit, which was #1 for 3 weeks beginning Jan.9. My local Sunday night oldies dj often plays it. It has always been one of my favorite instrumentals. Thanks for possting!
I only looked this up because Pat Conroy referenced it several times in his book "South of Broad"..I am glad I did.(I also highly reccomend the book or any other by Pat Conroy)
i have always loved this charming instrumental; it was in my vinyl collection that I sold about 5 years ago; now thanks to you, I can-re enjoy it; ty again, and keep up the good work.
No worries @TomKellycartoons. Life is life and that is how it was for me. Regrets I will always have. But it shaped me into a good father for my daughter. I certainly do not treat her like I was treated. However my mom was a great provider and hard worker. She just never was emotionally there for me. But life could of been worse. This kind of music always made rough times much easier to deal with back then. Thank you again.
My mom passed away yesterday. This song reminds me when I used to be a kid and grab my older brothers clarinet and play this and other songs by ear. My mom never did give a damn how good I got or not. But somehow this inpired me to keep playing. Of course I didnt stick with the clarinet. I played many others over the years. Trumpet, Blass Clarinet, Saxaphone and finally settling on the piano. Tho I will miss her....I sure wish she would of been a better mom to me.
@excelsciors Oh, my. Your last sentence did me in. I'm a musician and artist and the piano and that blank piece of drawing paper were my "happy places" in a household with a pretty crazy mother. Hope all is well with you. Sorry about your mother's passing and history. Peace, friend. Geez...I'm losing it here for the moment.
I was a young lad in Mexico City back in 1961 when I first heard this wonderful melody. It brings back so many memories of my old "cuates" in Mexico as well as my father it was one of his favourites.
so... I stumbled upon this in wonderful youtube, and I was about to go look at something else, (anything else really) but I couldn't help myself. Very beautiful instrumental! Made me want to dance cheek to cheek with bf. Too bad, with our generation and location, we don't dance like that, hell we don't dance at all.
awesome....been collecting kaempfert vinyl at the local thrift store. brings me back to the early '70s, when i was just 3 and 4, yet i remember this music because it is so good
The first time I heard this it was magical! I didn't realize so many others had such fond memories of it! I really enjoyed hearing it again. Thank You.
I can remember rollerskating to this at Ft. Bragg in 1961, they'd turn on the sparkling ball in the center and it was couples skate only......those were the days!!!!!!
When I was married to my first husband we used to drift off to sleep listening to music like this on the radio at night. Beautiful memories. Though he is gone now and I am happily remarried the memories are still with me and always will be. I don't believe there
ever will again be beautiful music like this created.
this is amazing to hear again. i was not a 50's baby but early 60's and played most of Bert's and Eddie's music in the eighties as lead trumpet in the NWC band. What wonderful memories. modern music just doesn't compare to it.........
i can't put into words...just how great this music makes me feel...how about hitting the jackpot using your last couple of bucks..on the slots..how about..asking the most beautiful girl in the room to dance and she says..i was hoping all night you would ask me ....how about stopping to help a family stuck on the side of the road...and you pop the hood and actually fix the problem..and they get going again...!!!!!!
Those wind-up phonographs were really difficult to play 33rpm albums on, thank goodness for CD and DVD, although, imho, 33rpm vinyl with valve amplification still sounds best.
Thank you sooo much for this! Along with A Summer Place by Percy Faith, this is one of my all time favorites. It reminds of the skating rink back in the 60s. What a wonderful time the 60s were for music and for having the most fun in the world.
@74magnolia Oh yes! A Summer Place...memories for me, too. That lovely song on a cheap transistor radio on lazy beach days in Southern California....and I agree with your remark about sixties music! Thanks for jogging my memory!
@74magnolia Cherish it now while you can. Who knows how many more good times we'll have in this diminishing culture-rot age. You and I have a lot in common in terms of our age and musical tastes. I was raised on MUZAK back during our childhoods, thanks in large part to my dad playing this stuff on the D.C.-area local station, WGAY.
My Mom's favorite, too. I was a handful of years old when she and I listened to this on the small phonograph around 1963-1964 in North Carolina. Although she's been gone 6 years, I feel her closeness when I hear this song, which made her feel closer to her Bavaria when she listened to it. Thank you for the memories....
This was one of my Mom's favorite songs when I was young. It was meloncholy and would make her cry sometimes. It makes me cry now since Mom passed away 2 years ago, but I still love it. I still have the 45 that she listened to and I found a copy of the Lp a few years ago in NYC. Thanks for posting.
This was my Grandpa's favorite song. i was only 2 when he passed away, so I don't really remember him, but listening to this song makes me feel close to him. Thank you so much for posting it....
A tad too young to have enjoyed it at my school dances (our finale was usually "Stairway To Heaven" or "Whiter Shade Of Pale"), but I still think it's dreamy. Thanks for posting, oldies55, and FrancisRidley for sharing!
I was a junior in high school when this came out in early 1961. I remember it was usually chosen as the closing song for most of our school's Saturday night sock hops. Whenever I hear the beginning of the song, "ONE!" ( or rather "Won-") I have bittersweet memories of "Rats, the dance is over." It's truly a beautifully romantic song. Something we kids deeply enjoyed abck then.
We must be about the same age. It was a great song for the school dances. Later on, I discovered the words to the music and was so pleased to be able to sing along a little with the music...I even have it on my iPod now! GREAT SONG!
Me too!! I remember my father playing this on our playerpiano. My siblings and I would sing along with him as we read the lyrics scrolling down on the side of the player scroll.
We would always let Papa sing the first few words: "Stars hang suspended...." and then we would eagerly jump in. Oh this brings back beautiful memories. It's nice how music has different effects on our memories. It's like a private time machine.
Remember being with my girl when in high school and in the dashboard lights listening to WKBW, Buffalo, NY as we were parked and making out. We laugh now at our class reunions that when a girl said "NO" that's what it meant. Both of us have moved on.

@argentum4816 don't know what there is to disbelieve, the tune was played by the band every Saturday night at The Wonderland Ballroom.
Enjoyed the music of the band, there was no airconditioning in the ballroom then and gents had to wait under told they may remove their coats.
I never said Bert Kaempfert played there but the tune was certainly played every Saturday night.
Many of my friends met their wives there, a wonderful night always.

This was one of those records which was number one here in OKC, like for almost forever. Anita Bryant had a vocal version of this song.

I only discovered this song through "Anthology", the Beatles documentary. George Harrison mentions it in passing.

i can't put into words...just how great this music makes me feel...how about hitting the jackpot using your last couple of bucks..on the slots..how about..asking the most beautiful girl in the room to dance and she says..i was hoping all night you would ask me ....how about stopping to help a family stuck on the side of the road...and you pop the hood and actually fix the problem..and they get going again...!!!!!!

Those wind-up phonographs were really difficult to play 33rpm albums on, thank goodness for CD and DVD, although, imho, 33rpm vinyl with valve amplification still sounds best.
Ilovemyoldguitar 2 years ago
oh, yes, I used to build the bast class-c amps w/ 6L6's or 6V6's. great sound.
blueoeliphant 2 years ago
I have a valve amp built in 1952, works ok but there is a nasty floating voltage on the case, so it doesn't get fired up very often.

There was another song Kaempfert penned that didn't get much play in the U.S. It was called "The Bass Walks."

Thanks for jogging my memory!
tomkellycartoons 1 year ago

Something we kids deeply enjoyed abck then.
beagle5pup 2 years ago 40
We must be about the same age. It was a great song for the school dances. Later on, I discovered the words to the music and was so pleased to be able to sing along a little with the music...I even have it on my iPod now! GREAT SONG!
jnvyoral 2 years ago 4
