  • 10-14 mpg. if it's tuned. Do you still have it? In 1978 you actually could get the 460 option.

  • Nice solid car!! Who the hell needs airbags when ya got heavy rolling steel like this that can drive thru a house and keep going!!! Uncle Bucks car!!

  • Nice choice! I love these old Fords and it's nice that you'd use one to save your Caddy. It's been 3 years since you posted this video... do you still have this car?

  • Nicely done video, you did a great job telling the history of the car and how you came to own it.

I look forward to hearing of more of your old car adventures.

  • Sometimes the choke heat riser rots away & itll make a ticking sound if u dont replace it.

  • You can get a 460 in the grand marquis, 78 was

the last year for the big block.

  • You should clean the engine from gunk and sluge and other crap so that ile last longer and better millege and get it restored BTW Nice car!:)

  • smoking probably was a cracked manifold? pretty late but ya kw haha nice car man!

  • DO NOT SCRAP THIS!!!! -by the way, you sound just like Bruce Campbell !

  • Great car!!! Amazing!!! What a trooper!

  • This car deserve to be restored.

  • I remember an old lady that had a car like that when I was little. Brings back memories.

  • that car is in nice shape dude u r a lucky guy

  • good ole 652

  • those mercs was built in st.louis mo at the hazelwood plant which is long gone now, my dad worked there for 31 years 1964-1995, so had my mom for 17 years 1976-1993. that plant built merc full-sized cars from 1948-1983 some fords and lincs. great to still see one :)

  • In 1978 you could still get the 460 option, you could even get the 429 option. Along with the oil burning, it's most likely your Valve seals in the heads. It's letting oil seep around the valves, and into the cylinder. Simple fix. My 74 Montego with the 400M has the same issue.

  • In 1978 you could still get the 460 option, you could even get the 429 option.

  • i have a 1978 mercury grand marquis With the 460! It in perfect condition. i will have a video posted soon showing it to you guys!

  • Thank You for saving this beauty! I believe the 460 was available till the end of these behemoths , till the 1978 MY that is. However I've heard the difference in gas mileage is really noticeable between the two engines, so the 400 might be a better choice after all

  • lol What is that thing that looks like a Coffee Can?

  • that car is a warrior

  • what's with the '652' numbers? Must have an interesting history.

  • i just found one! and im gonna derby it!!!!!!!!

  • That thing is so ugly it's beautiful :)

  • Those ANNOYING '70s buzzers!!!

  • WHAT?? It started right up!! I really wasn't expecting that.

  • Nice car. I'm watching this vid about a year after you posted it; do you still have her? Thanks for saving it from the juckyard.

  • kool how doesit handel i the snow take us for a drive!!

  • I bought my '77 Grand Marquis 4dr, 460 in 1990 and still have it. What a hiway cruuzzer! In '78 the Lincoln was still available w/460 but not the Merc. Too bad... =(

  • judging by the numbers on the side, i am going to guess that it was in some sort of figure 8 race or something maybe?

  • I take it you are going to just use it until it runs into the ground?

  • Prs, Id say the miles are right. And Id bet that your ac still works. Mine does. I also think your radio is original. Ill make an interior vid of my 78 LTD for ya.

  • Beginning in '78, all full-size Mercurys were equipped with the 351 Modified V-8 standard equipment--both the 400 and 460 could still be ordered as options as yours was. This was an effort to get maybe one MPG better mileage for CAFE. A 400 is the least engine you would want--a 351 would be completely inadequate and probably use more gasoline than a 400 or 460.

  • Really? cause my mom drove an 84 delta 88 with 216,000 miles to work and back for the past 5 years and its more reliable than my aunts 05 envoy. Still has heat and ac where the envoy doesnt. gets approx 15mpg and is the safest car Ive ever been in. Went through a brick wall cause I judged a turn wrong and it drove home. No damage. Ill make a video of it later.

  • i bet that car sat 4 a long ass time if the interior is that new looking and only 85000 on it

  • wow this thing looks bigger then the continental town car. id still own one

  • i like the interior of it

  • Its a great looking car (if it was fixed up a bit), I love cars like this....fortunately cash for clunkers might be able to help you for this one, they could give you like $4500 and you could put that to buying a new 2009 Marquis!

  • It was cars 1984 and above

  • These cars did come with the optional 460

  • R U sure? I thought ford was close to being rejected by the CAFE standards in 1978, so they only allowed the 460 on the lincolns,

  • Maybe it is different in Canada. Cause I had a '78 with a numbers matching 460.

  • It DEFINATLY has it's own personality. If you like this car, you should see the movie with the late John Candy called "Uncle Buck". His characture has a 2-dr version of this. HIS, ALSO has a personality of it's own- but the dawm thing ran!!

  • When it started it sounded just like the Marquis in Uncle Buck...

  • Uncle Buck's car was a '77 Marquis.

  • Ok, the noise when it started....SCARY!

  • It is a coffee can, LOL! All of those Fords in the late 70's had those under the hood. Nice car though. I miss my 77 Ford LTD a lot. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • i like lincoln better for yet another reason. it doesn't make that buzzer sound like a shut off dryer when you turn the key. it makes a classy dinging sound

  • ford dont have delco radios, delco is GM

  • Yes, Delco was GM, but if you listen carefully I say PHILCO - the company that made Ford's radios.

  • This was back when cars had class and style. This is a very nice car, despite all the cosmetic issues.

  • I have a 1977 Grand Marquis Brogham w/ a 460 motor. It'll pass anything on the highway--except the Exxon station! The only on-going problem is with the Thick Film Module. When it gets old (~2yrs) the car dies out. Easy to replace but a pain.

  • How's the oil pressure when the engine warms up? With the Clevelands, 351Ms, and 400s, seems when they get some miles on them, the bottom end gets loose.

  • Well, put it this way - there's no oil pressure gauge and all there is for warning is an ENGINE light. Actually seemed pretty stupid of Ford to do that, they could have easily added more lights that say TEMP, PRESS, or COOLANT, etc. I have never had a problem with the pressure, although like I said the engine has a very slight tick to it.

  • i have a 1978 Plymouth Fury with 58,000 original miles with a mint interior , but poor body. Used for the same purpose! winter beater and rammin shit with! lol

  • I like the tone of your voice. You seem amazed and that's very cool. I know the feeling.

    Thanks for sharing. Adorable automobile.

  • Thanks for the flashback...I had 77 Marquis that I bought in 98 in about the same condition in a pine green color with the 400M engine.

  • sell that thanf when you ready. i have a 78 grand marquis that's the same color.

  • nothing like an old full chassis car 400 aint that the cleveland?if it is then thats a motor to keep that noise sounds like metal hitting metal belts might be rubbing on something

  • there is nothing like driving a classic piece of americana

  • any one have a question about the "choke", i spend many a mornings finding out how to "tune"it. P/M me for a detailed how to...

  • See if you can a southwest car we have tons of these in boneyards with no rust... people just junk them

  • I like these cars too but if you're just lookin for somethin to drive, why don't you look for a new car that is not a gas pig?

  • Because no new car has the same feel as a car from the 70's, and I am not complaining about the gas yet!

  • @prs0889

That`s right man! No new car has the feel of a luxury car from the 1970`s.

I`ve got a 1978 Cadillac Sedan Deville and it`s like driving on a cloud!

  • ummm big V8+ large size = comfort+ safety ...beats a 4 cylinder econobox anyday

  • Yeah, so why ruin it, Wouldn't it be nice to drive em' for ever? btw. Cool car. It looks quite badass!

  • why ruin it??? have you tried driving cars that have been sitting for ages? they have to be driven regularly or the carb gets stuck and carbon builds up in the engine

  • @coldplays179 fucking right. I am hopefully buying a 1990 mercury grand marquis with about 24,000 miles soon

  • i have a 77 marquis brogham with a 7.2L, 460ci v8. Talk about a car with balls to spare.

  • how much did you get it for?

  • i have a 73 marquis brougham all original

  • You should check out - Bar's Engine Oil Stop Leak. It's worth it a try. It can give you extra years out of the car.

  • shes a beauty, I believe you could get a 460 in the grand marquis version, they still had them for the lincolns... im having an argument with someone however

im just wondering if you could check the owners manual and tell me if the auto-headlight dimmer was an option for 78? thanks

  • Haha I hope you guys realize the point of this car is to just be a beater, one of those cars that runs and drives decent but looks like absolute crap, and a car that you can ram into stuff with. I am definitely not trying to restore it!! I think the worse it looks the funnier it is, and people are always stopping me to ask about it.

  • I got a 1979 Lincoln Continental 400 for $350 in WAY way way better condition than that.

  • Cool Merc. I love these cars. I have a 77 Lincoln Town car that had the same rear bumper problem. Rest of the car was fine. Its actually a fairly easy fix if you can find someone who is a good welder.

  • Well, there is really nothing WRONG with my car, it does not die out when it's cold, it just runs rough. As for the oil burning... that doesn't bother me, just pisses of the neighbors probably... I'm gonna perform regular maintenance and drive it 'till it stops.

  • OKAY watch the video the resonse and you will my Caprice does the same thing. Try pumping it just one time in the morning and see what happen. By the way, very nice car, I would drive it!!!!

  • ford painted the roof of the cars...then applied the landau roof.

i think oldsmobile did the opposite on the cutlass supreme's.

  • With some good elbow grease this car will survive for another 30 years!

  • Not sure, it was there when I got the car

  • whats the #652 mean?

  • @assthwamper It's called the unit number, just like other locomotives. They must've forgotten to take em off when they removed it from the railroad tracks.

Dude, you already have an Acura for the winter driver. Don't "drive it till it stops": FIX IT WHEN IT STOPS!

Thanks for letting the legend live on!

  • You know, that really is a nice car! Sure it's got some "character", but it's got potential. I myself have a 1974 Ford LTD with a 400 as well, and the car's not quite in the shape yours is in, but mine looks worse, because the hood and fender is a different colour than the rest of the car lol, but these old full-size Fords will make it to hell and back, and still provide years of reliable service.

  • I will try to make a video of the Acura soon too, stay tuned.

  • Could you also, at some point, make a vid of that absolutely GORGEOUS TSX in the garage? I know my father would love to see it!

  • Yes, it could probably use a carb. adjustment, but at least it doesn't die out!

  • Great video!

It appears your car is suffering some of the same choke adjusment issues retrochad is having with his Marquis.

  • The Cadillac is a 1978 Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance with the 425 7.0 Liter. It is not fuel injected. I will make a video of it soon!

  • Love the GM Frigidaire A/c pump and GM Sag p/s pump, bet it has a Delco starter in it too

  • No, actually it has a very heavy Motorcraft direct-drive starter. They are fairly reliable, but a good upgrade on a daily-driven car is a Ford pmgr(permanent magnet gear reduction) starter. They have more starting power, less weight and better reliability. Same starter fits 351M/400/429/460.

  • What kind of engine is in your Cadillac? is it fuel injected? I remember seeing a 1977 Cadillac Seville which had a very early fuel injected 350 engine, but did the bigger cadillacs still use carburetors around that time?

  • 425 cu. in. V8. 7.0 liters.

  • Great video, and it sounds like it runs well! I think that in 1978 (last year for 400/460 on Marquis) the 460 was available as an extra-cost option. I do know that on the Lincolns in 1979, only the 400 was available, while the Marquis went to the 302 that year.

That Panasonic radio very closely mimics the actual Philco radio. Probably since this was a Marquis Brougham as opposed to a Grand Marquis it originally had a Philco AM-only radio.

  • nice old Ford, those 400 cid's never want to die!!!
