No life vest ? Also, the smaller the bluefish the less oily the flesh is, so they taste better when small. Pluse, releasing a fowl hooked fish is kind of dumb. But I gues it is better than killing it.
Nice video's brother I just got my yak a SoT and I fish the Raritan on the regular on the jersey side during the fall and spring. Question?? besides bunker ever try clamming in the spring or using worms for stripers? Also what gear do you always carry on your yak ? Thanks man and keep the videos coming !!!
@AudioInkCreative i prefer fishing at night but it does have its increased dangers. so far i have been lucky and not had any problems fishing after dark. pick places wisely and head on out. by the vz is a little sketcky at night. the currents and rips are pretty strong sometimes though i have fished there countless times i finally decided to avoid the vz area after dark. a little up the harbor by alice austin house is much safer after dark. or even better the south shore from gk to tottenvile
@chipleader14 here in new york you dont need running (the red/green lights on boats) lights for a kayak according to the law, but we do use a bright light called a visipole, plus a headlamp. if there is lots of boat traffic i use a very bright led lantern in the hull that makes the whole kayak glow. night time is the best for the stripers and we do over twenty night trips a year.
Well Obviously you'd bring a lantern of some sort, that's common sense =P
I was referring to the port/starboard lights and such that regular boats are required to have. I'm from Staten Island and am a long time fisherman, and I think I'm going to pick up a kayak for the Spring run. Do you need an actual launch or can you launch them where ever without cops bothering you? Also is there any groups that go out here like they do in NJ? I'd rather not go by myself all the time =P
@chipleader14 what launch you use depends on your kayak, heavy ones like a hobie PA need some sort of easy launch or it becomes a big PITA. light kayaks make it easier to launch in certain spots. last year they had laws saying where you could launch. i just just ignored them for the last two years and didnt have one problem. i have not run into any groups on the water. the sebago canoe club seems to be the most popular here in the city. i enjoy the solitude and try to fish where others are not
yeah i figured theyd be pretty easy to launch whereever as it doesnt take too long. and i enjoy the solitude too, but for some nights during rough weather and stuff like that, id rather have someone to talk to. Do you wear a pfd?
Hey, This is a great video and it must be great to have all that open water all to yourself. I mostly do freshwater fishing for LM bass around the island and brooklyn but starting to get into saltwater here in the island. what kind of gear and lures do you use/recommend for the blues/stripers? catch any snapper or porgies out there? i also heard fall is good for some stripers. is this true? sorry for all the Q's. i appreciate any advice.
thank you. a 7 foot spinning rod with a little backbone would be the most versatile set up. and tins usually work ok, plus the casting and retrieve is fun when they are biting. fish around points like ft wadsworth, or the jetties around high tide. the stripers are around in the best numbers in early to late spring on bait, about the same time as the smallish porgies we get over here in the bay. fall is good for stripers too, but its hit or miss. spring i more reliable here in the bay
im getting a fishing kayak in the spring and i am trying to decide if i should hook up any electronics to it. Do u have any electronics on ur kayak like a fish finder or gps system. Any advice would be great
Awesome video, Dru. I'm trying to market product to sports stores in the kayak business, and I think kayak fishing is really catching on. It's a cheap alternative to the bass boat.
Excellent video... when will the fish start running again? Where is a good place to put in with a kayak? Any info would be appreciated! Be safe and tight lines, Bob
Looks like you've got pretty good fishing around Staten Island. That 2nd fish turned your kayak on you. Barely saw him - too bad he got away. Also sounded like you said you did this after work. I used to fish after school and after work in Rochester in Upstate NY. Small & Largemouth Bass was my big thing up there.
the fishing here is great every spring and early summer. the one that got away was a biggie. its ok though. ill get more this spring. the stripers are lots of fun here too. any lake recommendations upstate? The smallies are my favorite freshwater fish.
Hey Dru.. I've been on the island for 11yrs but never fished it because I'm always in Jamaica bay. The fishing this season SUCKED, got skunked ALOT but I've been wanting to hit the R.Bay because I've heard its a good body of water. Spring's almost here...
i grew up and started fishing in jb.. raritan bay has some better fishing from march thru july. after that the other side of the island is better. dont wait till too late. the spring run happens early in rb. also try the fort by bay st.
Year round sounds great. When did you leave SI. we get some bigger fish here every spring. the bass runs have been great for the last ten years or so. what do you guys catch out there?
never a net or gaff to give the fish a sporting chance. i use a boat rod often. mostly for fluke, striped bass, weakfish, sea bass and occasional blackfish only when using bait. i eat many of the smaller fish releasing the larger more polluted ones. thanks for watching.
anyone goes kayak fishing in city island the bronx?

I wish I knew how to fish, I would join you in the Bay, but can't seem to find a fishing class for girls. Have any advise for a aspiring fisher girl?

Excellent catches for the next wearing a cod-end network not to lose the fish.
