the ainur are the equivalent of gods in tolkien's mythology (which extends like 10 times beyond what is in LOTR) and they have these servants called maia; so you could consider them demi-gods or lesser gods; all the evil in Tolkien's mythology comes from one corrupted ainur, Morgoth; Sauron was his maia;

Sauron is a great evil spirit. He is a divine entity, a being created by Iluvatar to assist in the creation of the world. Sauron rebelled and served Morgoth however.
