lol first thought was "hot section check." granted, its an afterburner system, if it was truly after the fans then its only the nozzle that gets the cooker. still, what were you using for the metal that it didnt warp under the stresses while that hot?
afterburner made by supplying additional fuel into exhaust cone...theres TONS of unburnt oxygen left in the exhaust to support combustion, now whether this guy used a secondary or even tierary ignition source, or whether he used the residual heat from the exhaust itself...was at his discretion....and yes...u can reignite afterburners without more ignition. theres hotspots on the metal that are red hot....fuel/air mixture contacts....bang
I don't know about turbo chargers, but in turbojet engines the compressed exhaust air is hot enough to ignite additional fuel. simply add more fuel behind the exhaust stage and BAM! You got more thrust and an erection! To take advantage of this raised air pressure, you push it thru an afterburner cone, such as the one thats glowing in the vid. On an F-18 or similar jets, these cones (or turkey feathers) can open or contract for added efficiency.
what metals are you using for the exhaust on that? Is it a nickle alloy? I would think that you would stay away from steels on that due to the high temperatures. I am a welding engineer and red steel as a structural compenent makes me cringe.
To uphold incase or reinforce a item ... a subway tunnel is structural is it not ? Without it the subway would cave in .without the metal muffler the gases would not be dampened and there would no out going pressure ,,the muffler is upholding pressure and incasing the inner workings ..why not mke one out of paper or wood that what earthmover is talking about
but in a turbine engine the exhaust nozzle plays a very important role. If a piece were to melt or fracture off just say..it wouldn't end very well. I imagine for someone who has gotten this far obviously knows a thing or two about the turbines to say the least.
What you can't see is hottest. UV or X-rays should be hottest (Has to be pretty damn hot to do this). But then again I'm not exactly an electromagnetic radiation expert so I'm probably wrong... Only remember what high school taught me
Sorry mate but you do not know what you are talking about. The heat that is causing the nozzle to glow on the "afterburner nozzle" (not the turbine nozzle!!!) is from the burning fuel in the afterburner and NOTHING to do with EGT's (T4) from the combuster/turbine output! The EGT on this engine at a combuster pressure of 30PSI is around 650.c
Really? I guess it's back to the books for me, gotta brush up on thrust engines. I deal primarily with gas turbines in helicopters, so I admit my knowledge of afterburners is essentially nil. I just get a little antsy when I see red glowies on GTEs; last time I saw one of those was right before a power shaft bearing let go and almost killed me. That nozzle contains no moving parts from what you say, so no worries, right?
When u get that blue flame(looks like an ideal flame, not quite sure though); how u get that in terms of fuel and oxygen injected into the chamber? Is that when u get a perfect ratio of the fuel burning with oxygen?
@ MBR84 - AFAIK a blue flame would be a good burn ratio. The vid shows a bad burn ratio but it was just for visual effect. Ideal circumstances would be very little flame exiting the jetpipe. Any flame exit is inefficiency and not required.
Afterburner burns more fuel in exhaust air (which is still oxygen rich). The increased temperature raises the mach speed which allows faster flow of the choked exhaust gases. Faster flow equals greater impulse force.
If you are refering to the afterburner then yes you are probably correct as it was very over fueled, for effect, and does make the cone a bit red :)
It can be toned down and made to not spit fire at all and it still has about the same thrust. You gain no extra by having the flame out the back - only more heat and more flame - Oh, and possibly more noise :)))
