@MrAugustus88 do me a favor and fuck off , this is pure blues from the best blues band , stones were not always psychedelic if you want that go listen to type of music theres always beatles trash sgt peppers
I think Jagger got the idea for this song. It's a lot different from the rest of the album. I like it, but it doesn't sound like the rest of the album.. :)
@ConservativeDK no this is a Robert Johnson cover, personally I think it works very well with the album (simillar sound to Ventilator Blues, Hip Shake Boogie)
You amuse, @BaggedGnome. McDonalds have earned billions more than I ever will. Yet, no one would claim that McDonalds cooks and sells an authentic burger.
@prober45 or they must have really liked, in fact. What if they just have cats jumping from their laps onto the keyboard? These things happen, man, believe me!
@prober45 Hey, I like The Rolling Stones as well as ABBA, if you want to criticize someone, criticize Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, the Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne and all those other shitheads!
The Stones sure do pick good stuff to cover. This isn't the first Robert Johnson song that they covered either. Love in vain. They like covering Slim Harpo too.
Robert Johnson is a historic icon what it was destined to be a very remarkable figure to establish the lines of musical changes into blues rock history. It is very tasty to appreciate the guitar lines of Mick Taylor in this song with his slide in the Les Paul or Custom Gibson. A great thing about Rolling Stones is that Keith, Mick and Ron have been very jealous about what amplifier to choose to play to keep their true essence.
Great song. Nothing before or after stacks up to Exile, as a genuine blues rocker, cept ya ya's. Why he left? All 2nd guitar players (hello Ronnie) to Keith's ego meet w/misfortune in their lives-thats why MT left (he's 2 much a gent to say so). It's also why MJ rarely speaks to KR too. Mick Taylor, any real blues fan knows, is the real deal. All the good riffs left the Stones with Mick Taylor ~ please don't start me up...lol
Ronnie is not Hendrix or Clapton. But does the Stones' music really need long, sophisticated solo? After Taylor left Wood did a good job with the Stones otherwise Richards would kick him out long time ago. "Some Girls" album is one of the Stones' bests to me.
I think that the mix of talent that supported the great bands is where the real talent lies. Guys like Bobby Keys sax on Exile, and Mad Dogs, with guys like Carl Radle who was with Derek and the Dominoes, and Mad Dogs, and Nicky Hopkins from Jeff Beck Truth, Exile, and New Riders, That's what made the music I grew up with so good. We shared music, and ideas. and brought it all together Our generation visualized a better world through great music. Like John said, All you need is love.
@aljosha12 Now go back and listen to the original mix and recording from 1972 and not the remasterd 2010 release...original is MUCH better. Really captures the chaotic yet lethargic drug enduced atmosphere of what was going on at Nellcote during their tax exile. The mix in LA of that album is a real head scratcher too, but nonetheless this is one of the greatest rock albums ever put to tape.
The Stones, White Stripes, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, only to name a few...They all have their style. The POINT is that Robert Johnson's music is still alive more than 70 years after his death.
Robert Johnson only recorded 29 songs, so its pretty easy to grasp his whole discography, but if you want my personal fave...Sweet Home Chicago, Little Queen of Spade, From Four Till Late
What about Stevie Ray Vaughn? I personally have to include Django Reinhardt in any list of best guitar players of all time. But you and I agree on one point, and that is that Mick Tayor is great.
@PENTADACTYLON sure...SRV, clapton, hendrix, allman, i guess page but maybe an old blues guitarist like johnson or bb king or a jazz guitarist like les paul or django reinhardt depending on how im feeling lol
@DestroyerofSouls666 Mick left because he never felt like he fit in and his contribution to the band was kept to a minimum. He had wanted to quit earlier than he did but felt that staying on the Stones for five years or so would be useful as a springboard to a solo career. Keith called his quitting a bombshell in his recent memoirs. Unfortunately for Mick he's not a great personality. He's great as a guitarist, but as a solo artist he never was able to take it very far.
@DestroyerofSouls666 Actually he first appeared on Let It Bleed but only on something like two tracks. He was their guitarist heading into the recording of Black and Blue as well but quite just as they began recording. At that time Ronnie was still in the Faces and only played on select tracks with Wayne Perkins (who was actually their first pick) and Harvey Mandel playing the others. Ronnie wasn't given the job full time until after the Faces officially split.
@JoeKersten keith richard's memoirs are about as reliable as a one dollar watch. He was a heroin addict during this period and essentially drove Taylor out because he couldn't cope with his own inability to play and Taylor's talent. Rehearsal footage bears this out. He struggled to get on top of things and was often excoriated for his 'handcuffed' playing. To this day, many people mistake his playing for Taylor's.
@dermotwalker That's laughable. Right Keith has continued on without Mick Taylor for the last thirty six years because he's, luck? Taylor never felt wanted in the Stones so he left, there isn't some big conspiracy attached to this. And apparently you didn't understand my comment. Keith called Mick's leaving a bombshell. Keith fully understood Mick's importance to their sound and didn't want him to leave. I'm getting really bored of people who feel like Taylor got a raw deal.
@JoeKersten Leaving aside the literacy issues in your post and the fact that I couldn't care less what you're bored with (not 'of'), I understood your theory perfectly. It's just wrong, that's all.
Speaking as someone who had 14 stones albums back in the day and who saw them perform, I can tell you there were many, many times when they were fucking dreadful.
When jagger forgot the words and when richards' playing was so shambolic, he actually missed the chords he was trying for.
@dermotwalker Sorry to bore on at you buddy but I've just remembered that during the Let It Bleed recording sessions in 1969, Richards stormed out for a few days in protest at Jimmy Miller's decision to bring ( the fabulous ) Ry Cooder in to beef up the guitars - just like Dave Mason did during the Beggars Banquet sessions! And lemme repeat, just for the record, that there's no one can write a three chord wonder like keith richards but a smack addict's a smack addict, no matter how ya slice it.
@JoeKersten There certainly wasn't a conspiracy to drive him out - who said there was??
But these facts plus the heroin, led to the tensions that resulted in his leaving. It was a bombshell to Richards because he didn’t want him to leave, he just wanted him not to outperform him, so regularly.
@MrBluesrules Only ever heard fragments which might explain why I haven't been able to recognise it as the recording so many have raved about. Always felt the supporting musicians didn't get enough credit, people like hopkins, stewart & keyes. Not to mention the great jimmy miller. I was stunned to discover the female backing vocals across all of exile, were contributed by just three singers but mixed so beautifully by him that they sound like a full baptist choir - on tumbling dice, especially.
@JoeKersten Sorry to bore on at you buddy but I've just remembered that during the Let It Bleed recording sessions in 1969, Richards stormed out for a few days in protest at Jimmy Miller's decision to bring ( the fabulous ) Ry Cooder in to beef up the guitars - just like Dave Mason did during the Beggars Banquet sessions! @dermotwalker I totally agree. I think Mick Taylor left because he was turning into a smack addict himself and he felt isolated the whole time he played with the Stones. They really were amazing with him in their band. Shame he left. He says he still doesn't know why. I don't think he could handle it and he sure hasn't set the record business on fire since then. Keith and Mick write the songs. They just happen to be surrounded by great musicians who play on some the tracks.
riktheluddite: Jack White would call you an asshole to your face for saying something that fucking stupid. You're obviously a mouth breathing retard...I just wonder who you got to type something that idiotic for you, as your mental skills are non existant...
The White Stripes don't suck, they just have 2 members as opposed to 5 for the Stones, plus the keyboardist and who knows what studio guys laid stuff down... It's all good.
version of stones is more blues, version fo stripes is good too, but i prefeer version stones, have harmonica, slide of taylor ....stones gods... exile bible of rock!

Mick on rhythm guitar makes Keith sound like a country squire; a Little Lord Fauntleroy. ; ) One of my fave guitar assaults.

The White Stripes don't suck, they just have 2 members as opposed to 5 for the Stones, plus the keyboardist and who knows what studio guys laid stuff down... It's all good.

I too prefer the Stripes' version.

I've never heard the Stripes' version, but this is way better.
pekoe67 2 years ago 6
I just heard the White Stripes' version.
It (the Stripes' version) is more intense, which doesn't count for shit. This has all sorts of dynamics in it.
Mick plays great harp and killer rhythm guitar. The ending is one of the best of any blues I've heard.

MICK TAYLOR IS BETTER THAN RONNIE WOOD
sciuto01 2 years ago 5
Mick Taylor is better than 99.9% of rock's blues based guitarists. So, not fair to single Ronnie out!
