This guy's name is Dan Terry. He designed a line of super unique and high quality guitars. I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but this man is NOT an idiot.
PUT THAT BASTARD ON AN ELECTRIC GRINDER - NO MORE FRET, NO MORE FRET BUZZ - FRETS SUX ANYWAY, WHO NEEDS EM - PUT THE CHAINSAW TO THE NECK ALSO - BURN THE BODY - THROW AWAY THE CORD - GIVE THE AMP TO THE SALVOLUTION NAVY - THERE, PROBLEM SOLVED - GO THE FUCK AWAY - BUY A HARMONICA - BE HAPPY - THIS WAS MORE HELP THAN THE VIDEO - YOU ARE WELCOME!
well thats for a high fret out of place what about crown and polish after leveling for older worn frets ( and not worn out enough for a refret of the neck)
David, you can file a fret very minimally, but it needs to be "crowned" so the added width from filing, doesnt affect string to fret contact point, and ensures the contact point is still in the middle or "crown" of the fret. But new frets are always a more quality fix, but sometimes cash and finding a luthier you can trust is an issue. Great to hear you are a Banjo luthier.
hey noobs, after you file down the frets with a flat fiel you re-crown them, which means file them back down into their original rounded shape with a crowning file.
I agree, I've seen a couple of other videos already and I wouldn't let him near my guitars. I'd bet anything he's had several complaints of damage from slipped tools and such. It is LAZY to not do the job the right way. He could have just as easily stuck a piece of soft wood, or rubber, etc to raise the strings. he's just not good.
the text was never in the way during crucial parts of the film, you can get the just of it by seeing what he does before the text blocks any view. This was helpful. Thanks a mill. I'm trying to fix my B.C. Rich guitar cause it's in rather crappy condition so this was helpful.
Better use a plastic hammer rather than a file in most of the situations. It's NOT wrong to use a file, but it's easier to make mistakes, since frets can pop up in an angle so you might level a part where there is no buzz and hence create a new buzz spot. Files are more for experts which now what they are doing and have tons of experience behind them. Not everyday guitarists. Try with a plastic hammer first, if that does nothing... the file it is.
im in a jam i have a concert tonight but when i hit a open note all i hear is buzz when i fret it the buzz is less but is still there just a little it sounds like the buzz is coming from the bottom part of the bridge if i hit a note then slightly push my hand on the area of buzz it goes away but as soon as i lift it it is buzzing what can i do to fix this in the next 4 hours before the concert

id never use a file on my banjo's i build "ever", a new frets will cure the problum, a filed down frets is wider could change the key sound,
david1513 2 years ago
Unless someone makes pre-cut frets you're gonne have to do some work. If you know how to do it right, you won't have problems.
TheMadMusicMan 2 years ago
P.S: be informed that the reasons of fret buzz could be many, in fact more than one reason could manifest in your guitar at the same time.

theraytex 2 years ago
Don't use a file, that'll give you room for error. Just use a plastic hammer or something to knock it back into place.
If something comes outof where it's supposed to be, put it back in...
lazrpo1nt3r 3 years ago
I agree with you.
Better use a plastic hammer rather than a file in most of the situations. Fanatical86 2 years ago
could u explain the plastic hammer method. i dont want to butcher my guitar using a file
niniman93 2 years ago
Would work only in the case if the fret/s is are out of place being HIGHER than the rest.
Do as shown in video to figure out which fret part or which frets are higher.
Then try and hammer them with a plastic (or even better a rubber hammer; there is little difference but the plastic on is harder than the rubber one).
Focus the beats on the part where the fret is higher than the rest.
In case the fret is sunk in you can do 2 things: Replace it, or file down ALL the frest (BAD)

what kind of file do i need???
