  • 0:39 ...damn well ok then! (lol)

  • Could this be why i am missing 30Gb to my OCZ Agility 90gb?

In properties, it ses i have used 50.5gb of memory, but the total of gbs of files i can see/view/edit/delete only adds up to 20.3gb :( it feel like ive lost £50 out of my wallet...

  • Think I will use an ssd for my next build

  • But will it blend?

  • What Brand of SSD, do you recommend?

  • Internet explorer?

  • Thanks for the info! :)

  • @LinusTechTips

Does that mean that it will be practically impossible to recover your files with software like Recuva if you are using a SSD with trim?

  • @LinusTechTips

Are you the boss of NCIX?

  • So is it something that I have to install or enable or TRIM is automatically on when I install Win 7 on my fresh SSD ?????

  • @sloppiexx Windows 7 should enable TRIM automatically. If you want to check a program like SSDlife will tell you if TRIM is supported and enabled.

  • I'm running RAID0 Vertex 2's so no TRIM for me...

  • Does AHCI need to be enabled to use TRIM?

    Thanks.

  • Ooh four monitors :D.

  • Ohhhh :P

Write a random thing, go to the beginning of the sentence hold ins then type

  • So.. This "trim" is automatic?

  • @War000Lock Yep.

  • doesn't trim wear the drive down more though since it forces the data to be deleted outright?

  • Update: os lion and linux now support trim too.

  • what about trim support in raid 0 ? what is alternative for that?? thanks ^^

  • Linux has supported TRIM since Feb 2010. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

  • I just enabled TRIM for my Corsair 120GB Force 3 SSD in OS X Lion (Hackintosh). I can see a bit of a speed improvement.

    Great video, Linus.

  • @Colton328 Just wondering, do you have an account on tony mac x86 site?

I sware I've seen your name before.

  • @tino730

Of course I have an account on TonyMac. I'm an active user in the forums and help others out sometimes. I love my Hackintosh (typing on it right now!)

  • @Colton328 How did you enable it, I used a command. How do you notice difference?

  • @tino730

Go to "System Report" (Apple Logo-->About this Mac--->More info) and then click on "Serial-ATA". Find your SSD and look in the info. TRIM support should be enabled.

PM me on Tony if you need more help. It's completely worth using.

  • @Colton328 Thanks!

  • rofl he talks to much he needs a girl and stop to jerking on hardware. i am on hardware 21 years i was never explaning on internet because its useles u cant get girl like this. Use skills on your job when u selling.

  • @MakeSh00t And who the fuck are you? It's his job, he works for NCIX, I found this video informative and helpful so go fuck yourself you arrogant cunt.

  • @MakeSh00t Wow you are the least skilled English speaker I've ever seen, if all that stuff you just said helps you sleep at night, then good on you.. Loser

  • @MakeSh00t He's married.

  • woo i had the same netbook... then it broke :(

  • Is this the same "trim" Dan Fogler was talking about in the movie Good Luck Chuck? /watch?v=Xrnz8w7bp-8

  • DON'T BUY AN OCZ! DON'T! REALLY. MY FIRST ONE COULDN'T EVEN BE RECOGNIZED BY THE MOTHERBOARD ALTHOUGH IT'S QUITE A NEW ONE (EVEN WITH USB 3.0). MY SECOND ONE JUST CRASHED SOME DAYS AGO AND NOW I'M AGAIN RUNNING ON MY GOOD OLD HDD. DO YOU AND ME A FAVOR AND STICK TO CORSAIR. JUST READ THE ARTICLES ON THE NET. MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS I EXPERIENCED WITH OCZ. SO FEEL WARNED.

  • @LukasVideosify This is a Win/lose situation to be honest. Some people may have experienced your miss fortune and others, not so much.

  • @SOF006

You don't know how many reports of exactly that problem I found on amazon and other pages. However Corsair has almost only good recensions.

  • @LukasVideosify

I really agree on you because my laptop did recognize it but it kept on failing the installing windows 7

  • Thanks!

  • so do u wanna tell us how to actually ACTIVATE TRIM??? LDO!

  • Thanks I understood what is trim. But it TRIM functions like this then won't this make it harder for data recovery ? If some files got deleted accidentally by some other person using the same computer ?

  • Thanks for the video, I was wondering how all things Trim worked. Now I know :-)

  • can you do trim together with raid 0

  • @battisa Yes

  • whoa where did you get that shirt?

    you into vinyl toys/devilrobots?

    btw cool vid

  • Ok, kinda explained what trim does.

But i would like to know how it affects the other hard drives I have. I am using an Crucial 64Gb SSD for the operating system, And one 1Tb sata HDD for storage. In the cameraman's pc SSD install, you told us to set the bios to use ACHI , now does that effect the other drives, and can i set the other HDDs to raid?

  • Does all versions of win 7 suport trim ?

  • I'll do it in Snow Leopard. o w8

  • Actually, I don't wanna be a pedantic cunt, but the 2.6.33 release of the Linux kernel introduced support for TRIM, and that was on February 24th 2010, prior to the recording of this video. Thus, Windows 7 was not the only OS to support it. But seriously, nobody gives a damn so I'll stfu.

  • @megachadthereal osx also supports trim

  • dose TRIM afftet all the ssd in a system?

  • Ok thanks. But now how to trim it?

  • @DZgoodTimes windows 7 does it automatically when a ssd is detected

  • I'm sure I read in a magazine that OS X now supports trim... interesting...

Best explanation of TRIM ever BTW!

  • @asuperpower The lastest OS X update sent out added official TRIM support, but this video was made in 2010.

  • @asuperpower The latest OS X update sent out added official TRIM support, but this video was made in 2010.

  • so standard hdd dont have this problem?

  • Makes perfect sense

  • @zenak2 true

  • does trim works when u have drives in raid? does this speeds up reads too?

  • @LightBringerize Probably: yes.. but I'm not sure

  • Does Windows 7 home premium has that too?

  • @LightBringerize yes, all Windows 7s has

  • Great video thank you for explaining TRIM!

  • @zenak2 only win 7 ultimate supports it

  • My desk is on the other side of this wall.

    4 monitors. But of course.

  • How do i get TRIM and where , and how

  • @gazzxr Its enabled in Windows 7 by default.

  • Very helpful video, but i stil have a doubt.i have my normal hdd and just bought a ssd so if i changed to ahci mode for my ssd is my normal hdd still be useful?Since ahci only work with ssd.how is this gonna affect my hhd.

  • how to install trim... ??

  • @danielho87 It's enabled on Windows 7 by default. You don't have to worry!

  • @danielho87 It's enabled in Windows 7 by default.

  • OSX supports TRIM!

  • @mitchthegolfer OSX 10.6.7 supports TRIM on the macbook pro 2011 models. But how do you know if TRIM is actually TRIM-ing in the background?

  • LINUS!!!!! do you want us to smoke the ganga???

  • So if i understood corectly trim is a program, that extends you ssd's life and improves its characteristics. And that u can use it on every ssd?

  • @add2q21

Not a program, but a features

  • omg if you pause at 0:10 seconds, you can see how messy his office is >.<

  • @mathdarg450 and a bottle of anti-acid (tums I believe) and a roll of bathroom tissue (as kleenex). Nontheless, it was a very educational video :-) Now I know what TRIM does.

  • TRIM is awesome.

  • This is like the only video in youtube explaining TRIM..... If you search "What is trim?" this comes first and only related .

  • yes it does in word and open office

  • Thanks for this.

  • my window XP!!! and HARD DRIVE supportes TRIM

  • @sydney987321 Yes, your HARDDRIVE supports TRIM, XP doesn't.

  • Comment removed

  • So TRIM would keep the drive in better shape over time? The only reason I'm considering ssd is for speed, reliability, and a longer life span. Hard drives are always first to go on computers. I think Lion is suppose to support TRIM.

  • the world is getting lazier

  • @yuzz101 Nope. The world just got a little bit better :D

  • @trillasecond

you're wrong and you don't know how to spell - Vertex 1, 2 and 3 all have TRIM. OCZ have great customer support and are constantly blurting out firmware updates

  • @indoman00 not all SSD have trim the old kingston ssd dont have trim nor the OCZ vertex 2 that he had prior

the ssd he is using in this video was the next gen ssd OCZ Agility 2

but now their are even newer drives that are SATA III not SATA II

  • how do you enable trim???

  • Quick question... before installation of windows 7 do you need to go in bios and instead of IDE switch it to AHCI? or can this be done after the installation of windows 7?

  • @SIXSPEED69 can be done after, but requires reg edits and shit (sometimes).

    Just do it before :)

  • Does trim work in RAID 0 with two or more ssds?

  • Its not like im gonna use word that much anyway -.-

  • Thanks

  • no thanks, id rather put weed in my pipe and smoke that XD

  • @dethklok1989 LOL

  • It doesn't look like my P5N-D support TRIM even though I am using Windows 7.

Is this really bad and is there a alternative option for maintaining my SSD?

I only installed and play games on my SSD so is that a problem?

  • You should really think about getting M.A.I.D.

For that mess ass work station XD

  • Comment removed

  • really you should. but i think that there are ways that you can run it on other OS but you need to manually run the garbage your self, there might be other complications but that is the only one i know of:)

  • so if i get this right if i have ssd i should use windows 7?.

  • nice... the more I watch your vid. bro the more I learn cool keep it up bro... now let me ask you the supiest question whats the best SSD. LOL that was a joke great anology...bro...

  • Is there any simple solution for Snow Leopard?

  • @NixKah - Yes...use a real PC.

  • @ToiletBomberAlpha they use macs becasue they cant use computers

  • There was no "THANKS FOR WATCHING"!

    I'm really upset now :)!

  • does trim work if i have a RAID card installed?? cause it's a "virtual drive" n windows doesn't seem to treat it as two SSD(RAID 0)...... also my space is running very low.....

if i see the properties of the stuff inside the drive it's 26 GB but if i see the properties of the whole drive it says 51 GB used...... wth is happening??

    PLZ HELP!

  • @chchang1 i googled "trim in raid" and the first thing that came up was a new page from bit-tech that said intel released drivers to enable raided ssd to use trim although thats the first ive heard of it and dont know what specific intel hardware u need to use the drivers

  • Do I have to mess with the Bios to enable trim or Does Windows 7 Home Professional Do it automatically for me?

  • Is this why my win7 is hardly ever fragmented? I'm using standard old sata hard drives and its almost never more then 1 or 2% fragmented.

  • Put it in your pipe and smoke it........haven't heard that one before.

  • Wait, then what's the difference between TRIM and a hardware solution like the Silverstone HDD Boost (in terms of its longevity-extending functions, not its space-saving functions)?

  • how can we use trim on windows xp3? (intel ssd160/g2 or 80/g2)

    thanks

  • @firubbi I think that you can use cc cleaner to fill the free space with zeroes

  • how can we use trim on windows xp3? (intel ssd160/g2 or 80/g2)

    thanks

  • Well, Linux had TRIM support way for Windows

  • so it does not wipe it frm ur ssd the file or anything u want to delete

  • dude.. is trim automatic? or where can i find it.. its not in system tools like defrag and such..

  • hi how to enable trim

  • hi ive just got a ssd and i didnt format it , does it still perform faster ?

  • I heard that Windows XP supports TRIM now but it's not automatic. Has to be run automatically. If this is true then how would you run TRIM manually? I have this idea it's a application that i can put in task scheduler to run every 5 minutes or something?

  • @ryan180294 you just have to be one of those people don't you? Just have flex your "knowledge" and prove the OP wrong.

  • Do you have to install anything at all or do just install 7 and you're good to go?

    No drivers?

    No software?

  • @8lindfury always install the newest drivers, even if windows 7 installs drivers for you (they are not the newest)

  • @thehostler

    What drivers?

    The drivers for the SSD?

    Or the TRIM drivers?

    Or both?

If so where do I get the TRIM drivers from?

I'm buying an SSD very soon so I obviously need to know all this.

Drive is the OCZ Vertex II, so yes it has TRIM support.

  • @8lindfury win7 does "trim" automaticly, drivers for SSD's are not needed. i though u ment drivers for lan or audio :P

  • @thehostler Oh lol. Thanks for all the help :)

  • Cool... I just bought a thinkpad x201 with ssd and windows 7, so I'm good to go, right?

Any recommendations for me to tweek it?

  • How do I enable TRIM? Do all SSDs support it? Particularly, the Intel X-25M?

  • hey same ssd i ordered ..... bitchen

  • You just need a fimware upgrade in order to enable TRIM for OCZ and Intel drives under Linux. W7 is not the only one with support for this on the town and I even pressume that with Linux better disk formating and administration capabilities you can squish more juice out of your hardware.

    My 2 cents.

  • I love that shirt. :-)

  • What if i already installed SSD can I change it in bios or do i need to reinstall windows 7?

  • I just want to point out that TRIM is supported on all new Linux distros. I've been running a TRIM capable kernel (2.6.33 and newer) for the better part of 2 months now. So it is no longer Windows 7 only.

  • how can an ssd replace a hard drive when you use such as 500GB? ssd has not so much capacity?

  • @TheRailbow It has but it is fking expensive. 1200$ for a 500GB SSD or so.

  • Windows is NOT the only OS that features TRIM. Linux has had this support in recent kernels along with the latest HDParm.

  • this 14yr old kid has an office?! HOLY COW!!

  • ha, take that Apple! rotfl just kidding, no seriously, I'm not

  • I love LINUS

  • i will put that in my pipe and smoke it!

  • How do I know witch drives support TRIM? If I were shopping on Newegg or something like that?

  • most badass workstation ever, dream job much? lol

  • so is TRIM passive? U dont need to pull up a program to something and pres the "activate TRIM button"? Or it works automatically without your consent or knowledge?

  • @DreamRaider1111

windows 7 will recognize the ssd and automatically enable trim.

  • @svndgrs works completely automatically.

  • I will get mine in 1 or 2 hours and I want know if you can show the other feature of SSD like wiper utilities, garbage solution something like that? plz

    ty

  • Cool. When I build my next system I will have to do that. Thank you.

  • @ryan180294 I know, but I wanted a simpler analogy. The point is that instead of removing, THEN writing, it's just writing, which is faster. It doesn't really matter when the erase is done.

  • @LinusTechTips Do I need to RAID my ssd with my hdd if I want to use them together?

  • so how can I get trim for my SSD?

  • @BrutalTurtle

get windows 7, thats the only way.

  • why are sata6 ssds are not out yet and sata6 hdds are available?

  • @akelaristera crucial sata6gb is available

  • @akelaristera crucial c300 is sata 6.0 gbps

  • Whats your othr chanels name?

  • Thanks, very informative. Linus do you know if the TRIM feature would work better with SATA as AHCI or IDE mode set in the bios?

  • @GypsyGhost AHCI

  • i really want an SSD but it's too damn expensive!!!

32GB SSD is about 180 USD! in israel, where i live, and I'm not going to spend that much on a 32GB SSD, it's just doesn't worth it.

  • i knew it you smoke pot once in a while....ddd you live in vancouver xD

  • I want to get an ssd so bad

  • Nice, I was wondering this myself just yesterday and decided to look it up but found no good answer what so ever.

  • yeah great, send that drive already !

  • Thanks Linus! I didn't know that before.

  • linus !!!! why do you make videos so erly in the morning ?

  • this wont work on HDD?

  • @DarkPhychic

SSD's need to delete one bit to write another one, HDD's just rewrite them, so there's no need for TRIM like featre.
