This sounds more like Del Wood playing "Down Yonder" than anyone I've ever heard play it...other than Del Wood, of course. Absolutely amazing! Pure talent! Good luck! :)
Down Yonder appeared on Willie Nelson's 1975 Grammy winning album Red Headed Stranger (side 2 track 3.) The piano solo was by his sister Bobbie, who played with Willie on the road for almost all of both their lives. In concerts, Willie takes a break while Bobbie plays the tune. I saw them live in about 1996.
Some years ago I saw Winifred Atwell on stage and I thought nothing could ever be a successful challenge to that lady's playing. How wrong I was. You should be on a bill at the London Palladium buddy. Trust me, you are good.
Now THAT'S how it's supposed to sound! I'd pay to take in a Concert of yours! Thanks for sharing your talent through the magic of You Tube. My best to you!
You could easily give Moon Mullican, Dell Wood or even Jerry Lee Lewis or Mickey Gilley a run for their money easily! You are the best young piano player I have ever heard! I would love to hear you do Pinetops Boogie Woogie!
Michael - You are the Best since Liberace!!! I do love watching and listening to your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with the rest of us. You should be Famous!!!
You are the best in playing this kind of music! Please tell me how this kind of piano is called? Is it a pedal piano, with bass played by pedal? Thank you
Absolutely brilliant! Will definitely be subscribing to this!
You were right about one of your comments on another video, having an out of tune piano certainly adds authenticity! My piano is out of tune, wish I could produce something like this though! Good job!
Hi Michael, I guess I have played Down Yonder more than a 100 times it is such a good song to watch and listen you play. What a joy you are to watch and listen to. I also enjoy Adam Swanson, Tim Rotolo and Wesley Reznicek but you are by far my favorite. Keep up the fantastic playing I look forward to hearing more of your new songs. God bless you from Opelika, Alabama U.S.A.
Michael, You are my favorite pianist of all the you-tube pianist I listen and enjoy your music. God bless you for the wounderful music that you play. You are so talented keep playing and sharing your music for all to enjoy. You are a delight and joy to watch and listen to.
An old song says "in heaven there is no beer." But, I think as long as there's honky-tonk music, a sprightly old piano--(and a drop-dead-handsome man to play them!)--we'll all be happy forever. Good job, Michael.
Harp upright piano with French action sounds very much like your piano Michael. I was interested in comments of 123chevyman, and Honkytonkman. You're great - keep doing what you do so well.
Make an album, a CD. What kind of piano is that, its gorgeous. I just cant get enough ragtime and boogie woogie. If I had this music in my car, it would cut my frustration with traffic so and make it tollerable.
Some people sing in their cars .... If I were listening to this in my car, I'd drive off the road and kill myself trying to play this on my dashboard! It's bad enough when I'm listening to the Stones and playing guitar on the steering wheel!
Great piano playing, as always. But I wonder whether you had realised that your piano is a semitone flat? I had a honky-tonk piano that was flat to the same degree, but the piano tuner was able to take it up to correct pitch in one go, and it held its tune so well that I had to de-tune it myself by very slightly tightening the middle string of each trichord. It's best not to overdo the honky-tonk detuning, in my experience. Best of luck, and keep playing! Regards, Mike
T Totally Awesome! I am amazed every time I watch this. I LOVE ragtime. Have you ever seen Miss Bobby Nelson (Willie Nelson's sister) play this? She used to play it at his concerts. I don't know if she still does or not. I admire people who can play by ear. How long have you been playing the piano?
That is so amazing, I could watch it over and over. The way you sit down so serious and then just tear that piano up! Especially love around the 2-minute mark. Bravo!
Thats dexterity! Looking for a simple guitar version and thought i would give this piano version a listen.. Glad I did, that was way cool. You and that piano sound way older than you are.
Great !!! Keep the tradition alive. I remember in the late 1940s or early 50s the recording of DOWN YONDER by Lawrence Piano Roll Cook and then the recording by Del Wood.
WOW! I'm a fan! Please email me if you have recordings or CDs or something, not much out there in quality recording with current tech I know of. This is such great, fun stuff.
MIchael, You've been blessed with outstanding musical ability. I'm curious how long it takes you to learn and perfect your playing on a particular piece of music.
Don't know what to say, wonderful, excellent does describe when you see real talent. It is wonderful to see someone younger that enjoys another era music as well. Very much enjoyed your version of a classic song.
Michael, Of all the excellent pianists on here you are the one who retains the genuine Ragtime/Barrelhouse feel the best - I can see you playing in a bar in New Orleans - with the traditional suit and bowler hat - respect dude!
