GNU/Linux hackers made it possible to use one of the SPUs like a GPU for accelerated OpenGL.
Purely opinion/speculation but:
That meant Sony would have lost control over games on the PS3; assuming that is why Sony disallowed direct access to the RSX GPU.
Thus, they stopped shipping support for 'Other OS' with slim models to stop people from getting tons of nice free games on their PS3; some of which are "good enough" (e.g. Tremulous) to distract gamers from buying games of a similar type.

Point is Sony is very much concerned about the misuse of this power house! This is the soft reply from Sony:
The PS3 Slim is a major cost reduction involving many changes to hardware components in the PS3 design. In order to offer the OtherOS install, SCE would need to continue to maintain the OtherOS hypervisor drivers for any significant hardware changes this costs SCE.
Makes sense from their business perspective none could stop a Linux hack...like Hackintosh case :)

you can't really "hack" an open source platform. It's basically pre-hacked. It may have been due to the claims of copyright infringement. Which there actually was none

well i know i bit but you are like the first person to say its hacked off the self lol witch its not,it needs something at least like a softmod to get anywere... thats just like saying you can play psp/ps1 isos on psp with sonys firmware .. anyway when i say it was to stop hacking with the ps3,people will evantually crack the code and hack it so the ram is more accelerated ..ie ps1 and ps2 games on linux...

linux is reasonably fast on the ps3 but ur pc is probs better, but if u cant afford both then its ideal, but remember that linux will not be a part of the ps3 slim, sony have scrapped it.

and yes it does, and Ps3's dont have ram (unless u got a memory stick) They have gigs,
