Does anyone know what kumi-daiko songs the patterns are from that Kaoru Watanabe is using at the end there? I recognize Miyake, but what is the one later with the... (for lack of knowledge)... twirling arms around the head?
I got Kenny's CD one time, he signed it for me, after I had watched a moving performance by him in Berkeley once.
As he was signing it, one of his drummers who Id been talking to told him that I was half japanese. he asked me "Nihongo dekimaska?". I said no I didn't. then he looked down in dissapointment, in front of a crowd of people, and I got that old feeling of how I was a disgrace to my heritage..
I said thank you as he handed me back the cd I had just bought and I left.
I was trying to learn Japanese & Spanish at the same time (all on my own) but started to mix it up, starting a sentence in japanese and ending it in spanish or vice versa. So I decided to just learn one at a time, and since I spend a lot more time with spanish speaking people, it just came naturally that I was always practicing my spanish instead. Im half Puerto Rican and I'd like to visit my mother's hometown in Puerto Rico one day. . difficult to learn japanese with very busy life
@TigreCorazon Yes I can second that. I tried Chinese for a little while and it's very complicated. I once seen a study which said you need to spend one year in either England or Spain to gain perfect skills in that language. In China or Japan you may be lucky to EVER learn it. Even though I thought your heritage would have given you a slight bonus. Half Puerto Rican, half Japanese? That's surely an interesting mix. I kinda feel boring now as half German, half German. :-)
@TigreCorazon So you ditched Japanese then or are you saving it for later? This language would probably be a great way to get busy when you're retired in.. Dunno, 50 years? ;-) Oh well, I wish you the best of luck with that fufillment of your dream visiting you mothers hometown!
@TigreCorazon I ain't a native English speaker, so I am sorry if "ditched" is the wrong word for that. I usually use the words which seem right at that very moment. My question was more or less headed the way if you continue to learn Japanese after Spanish or if your life is too busy continuing that hard task. Well you answered that now. :-)
@lethalblade9 I believe the drum we hear at 0:21 is tsuzumi - used in Noh and Kabuki - or maybe otsuzumi, which is slightly larger. So, in addition to shinobue, unless I'm mistaken we have tsuzumi, and the other drums from left to right, hira-daiko, sumo-daiko, nagadou, and behind the sumo, tsukeshime-daiko. (And uchiwa-daiko @ 3:00 mark.)Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment?
Undoubtedly, this would have been an amazing concert as both these men are superlative performers.
Oh! I think it's Omiyage!
