When I saw the show once, I could hear people chuckling and other gasping, and even more were just silent with shock. It's just a personal reaction. Don't read too much into it.
@boyslikegirlsthunder I think a lot of people see Next to Normal as a comedy, not a drama as it was meant to be. A lot of the lines in the show are dark and disturbing, so I also don't understand why people laugh at them.
