Hispanics do not typically refer to themselves as being white as someone has posted. J Lo and Sammy Sosa are both of the same race, "hispanic", but of different ethnicities, where J Lo is Puerto Rican and Sammy Sosa, Dominican. While most would agree that most Hispanics are tan / light brown in color, there are many of us who are very fair skinned with blonde hair and blue and green eyes as well as very dark skinned with curly hair and dark brown eyes. Hispanic may be a race wherever you come from but it isn't considered a race in America. Check the last US census, it specifically says that people of Hispanic origin may be of any race. Racial categories are White, Black or African American, American

Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander. If they do not identify with any of these groups, they can check the some other race category.

You can't really blame people who are not aware or don't really know the proper terms or history of Hispanic people. I'm of Puerto Rican and Colombian descent born in New York. My parents were also born here after my grandparents migrated to New york in the late 40's.

It's interesting to hear people's classifications of other people. "Latinos" started out as people originating from Latin America, but has evolved into a term used to classify Spanish speaking people regardless of where they were born....this holds true for the term "Hispanic" as well. Hispanics is now considered a race and accounts for many ethnicities such as Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Dominicans, Venezuelans, Mexicans, etc... whom all speak "Spanish" although some have different dialects.

No, 'Latino' should in no way be contrasted with 'white'. Latino SOLELY means someone from Latin America. Latin Americans make up a variety of different races and ethnic groups. Amerindians, Whites, Blacks, Asians, Mestizos (white/ Amerindian), Mulato (black African/European), Zambo (black African/Amerindian), and Multiracial. I'm Puerto Rican and my mom is white (her parents immigrated from Spain) while my dad is black (descending from African slaves)... which makes my race Mulato.

Latino is not a race, it is an ethnicity. Téa (the character, not the actress) is Puerto Rican and most of them identify themselves as white. J.Lo and Sammy Sosa are both Latino but they are not the same race. A lot of Puerto Ricans are not "pure" white but most white Americans aren't pure either yet their race is still white. So the race description is correct.

um.... what, many of my friends are Latino, you call them white they wont have it. They look very brown, it's just that in television they tend to portray more light colored Latinos. Puerto Ricans, and many other Latinos for the most part are mixed

no prob it's all good, many white one's don't call themselves white either, my classmate is from peru, and I called her white (she looks white) and she says I'm kinda white but I prefer Latino

i read somewhere that most hispanics like puerto ricans aren't really "spanish" but a mix of the whites and native americans when the europeans came over

Puerto Ricans can be anything, because of the diversity within the people over there. But I think most Latinos who have no African in them would identify themselves as White.

To me, Tea is White, same for Daniela. I just don't see them as Latino. In fact, I consider most lighter skinned, fine haired Latins to be White.

They probably screwed up with that or she must of grew up around Spanish speaking people or lived in a spanish speaking country as her spanish is on point. I do believe she is Hispanic... us Hispanics have good guesses when it comes to this. lol I disagree with Gangstamel and cookiemonster..'s comments as they are misguided with terms and how hispanics view themselves.

Like sirsniffy said (he's accurate to a point). Puerto Ricans can be anything, many PR's are fully white because Spaniards, Italians, Corsicans, Poles, Frenchmen, Portuguese, Lebanese, Irish people all immigrated to Puerto Rico. Many Puerto Ricans are also the descendants of slaves or the mixture of slaves with Spanish colonizers and/or Tainos. Also, many Puerto Ricans are descendants of Tainos and Spaniards who mixed together. Even East Asians immigrated to Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans..

can be anything... the majority are mix though, with any of the people mentioned above. I understand that in the US the terms have been all mixed up and some wrongly think it's a separate race, but not even the US government lists it at that (hence the 'white' or 'black' Hispanic ect.). I was raised in Latin America and I and many who recently immigrated were and are shocked to find out that some American born Latinos consider it a separate race.
