I could have used the artscroll translation, but preferred working with a rabbi to learn the meaning of the prayer. Your comments about including the names of the matriarchs shows your individual prejudice - greater minds than mine have determined their names should be included where they once were omitted. 2: Even more egregious, at 0:13, you say "trembling & fearful I sit, with prayers for Israel"; awkward at best; someone judged stands, the judge sits. Correct translation: trembling & fearful with fear (the word fear appears twice, not once) of He (G-d, the King of Kings, the judge) who sits (enthroned upon) the psalms of Israel. T'hilot=psalms, t'filot=prayers. Many other examples miss nuances & references to 1000s of yrs of Jewish thought/prayer. May I suggest the Art Scroll translation.
Sadly I must disagree. You & your sources did not even begin to understand the nuances in the original. You split phrases, got awkward constructions & then stumbled to rationalize your errors. A chazzon stands. Why do you sit, walk & stand? Ans: multiple mistranslations. 2:18 is not "I walk & stand to " but that (after this introductory petition) I am about to (going to) stand & request mercy for myself . Alai standing alone = "on me"; as part of the previous phrase means "for myself."
Although the tone of your commentary is negative, I am greatful to have a fuller understanding of the text, as my Hebrew is a work in slow progress. Translation can't be exact. But in terms of understanding the meaning of the text in its entirety, I believe that I do understand the underlying message, and so does the congregation for whom I sing. For those who have no knowledge of Hebrew, this translation is better than just hearing syllables. Of course that is just my opinion.
Thank you for including the words and translation in you last 3 videos Rowna. It makes it easier to follow. As you would be aware that texts to your works are not available on the internet and I am aware that it does take a condierable amount of time to include these texts as part of your video. And thank you for making the text colour contrast to your images. (I have severe problems with seeing plain colours like white on a light background.) Another beautiful recital. Thank you.
Paul - your kind words mean so much to me - i am preparing for the awesome Kol Nidre Service right now. I am so glad that the words were of help to you - I consciously chose just one photo and tried to contrast the color so that everyone could read the words.
Unfortunately, this prayer is said facing the Ark,(away from the congregation) and under a significant overhang - is really hard to record under those conditions - but I felt that the prayer and the words posted on youtube were still worth doing.
