What a player, the word legend is bandied about too often these days but here is one. The first black player in any sport to captain a British team and one of Hull's most beloved adopted sons, 100+ tries and Challenge Cup winning medals for both teams. God bless Clive Sullivan
flash died age 66,not in his 40s,he told me sully was a great man and a gentleman, you cant compare the 2 cos flash was a hooker very fast and skillfull but Clive Sullivan MBE was a winger and nobody was as fast as a GB wingman in his prime!p.s leoOwnsWwe you must be a distant cousin as flash is my dad
A great rugby player and by all accounts a true gentleman. The Cardiff suburb of Splott produced Clive Sullivan, Shirley Bassey and Dave Edmunds to name but three.
I saw him play at the Boulevard one night against Widnes and he ran 50 m down the touchline with Widnes players trying to push him into touch and tackle him. He evaded them but never went in more than 2 m from the line at any time. It was magic, his legs glistening with Vaseline, it looked like at any time he'd be tackled into touch but he ran to the Widnes line untouched. There are some things you never forget and this was one for me in 50 years of watching league.
thanks for this norbellini. made my day. so long ago . saw it on grandstand when i was a kid and remember going mental as sully hugged the touchline on the way to this history shaping moment . what a magnificent player. remember his mile wide smile when we won the cup replay at elland road in 82. true hull legend for both tribes either side of the river.gone but never forgotten.cheers sully.
Probably the most loved Hull player ever..at both ends of the town. At his funeral Trinity church and the market area of Hull was packed solid with red and white and black and white. He was a genuine nice guy and took time to talk to everyone. A huge loss to everyone who knew him and always remembered with fondness. He was quite happy to admit that he was totally knackered after this try.
