If it weren't for people referencing the late Andrew Woods, I would've kept on imagining a bird from his prime to his death every time I hear this song.
If it weren't for people referencing the late Andrew Woods, I would've kept on imagining a bird from his prime to his death every time I hear this song. Too bad he died the year I came into this world (1990).
This song is ranked #3 in the Top 100 greatest vocal performances of all time. Right under 'Child in Time' by Deep Purple (#2) and 'Love Reign O'er Me' by the Who's Roger Daltrey.
@Toke420is He's one of my favorite singers as well but he can't touch vocal performances like this one. Great, powerful, haunting voice but not range as wide as Chris's. I don't think he could have sung any Temple of the dog songs, but I think Chris could have sung almost any Alice in Chains song.
@Audioslave3 They were completely different singers, he could've technically sang Alice in Chains' songs but they wouldn't sounded half as good because Layne is what made them so unique, not to mention his harmonies with Jerry.
it would be great if someone could get the vocal track of this song...has anyone heard anything that compares with the epicness of this vocal performance? please say..
i hope God is cool enough to let this song play for me as i take my first steps into the everlasting kingdom......stand around and soak it up.......eternal life.
in an old interview shortly after soundgarden broke up Chris Cornell said he was glad soundgarden ended and he probably woudln't want it to start up again because he said it would probably just be for money and he didnt want that as an inspiration. so since he said that i am not quite sure i am glad that soundgarden is back together. they ended well. and Chris Cornell thought so too.
@whogivesaflyinfock he said he didn't want to start Soundgarden again in what, 1998-99? He's 47 now, he has matured A LOT, he said numerous times that Soundgarden should have NEVER broken up, but instead taken a few years off. Seeing these two statements back to back, I think that now he sees his mistakes (and, mind you, during the time SG broke up, Cornell was a raging drunk)
@Lawldudz the drinking issue stands strong but even still he said flat out that if they were to get back together it would probably be just for the money and he claimed he woudl have hated that to be the inspiration. whos to say which statement is clear. the new stuff doesnt seem to have the passion that the 90s music did. the latter statement may have just been him justifying himself for getting the band back together. not saying thats true but we dont know.
@whogivesaflyinfock well, certainly, Chris might be in it just for the money, but I strongly doubt that because their summer tour was very well recieved, a lot of people noted that they were genuinely happy about being Soundgarden again, etc. Also, only Black Rain so far was released and it was a Badmotorfinger cut with some re-recording, so you can't really judge them by that. I guess only time and their new album will tell...
thx for posting these songs, but i have one thing i gotta bitch about. you give too much credit to chris cornell, when the band is basically pearl jam with chris cornell singing. also, i havent seen ONE pic of Andrew Wood; who this whole album is dedicated to. now that i got that out of my system, thanks man :]
My dad died when i was 3 (im 13 now) and loved this song for years. I will actually be singing it for the talent show and dedicate it to him. It is a weird coincedence, for my dad was born in puerto rico (an island) and died in his car, when a man shot him (on the street). weird huh? love3 this song, and hope to see chris in LA soon! love you <3
Chris Cornell is truly somethin amazing. Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave...he just keeps showin why he's the shit. Glad to hear Soundgarden is back together!! Rock on!!
Temple of the dog is the shit. All their songs are underrated cuz people are quick to flip to Soundgarden and forget this was mainly a tribute band to Andrew Woods. RIP all you great rockers!
I have this picture in my head when I hear this song of the firefighters and civilians coming out of the smokey rubble of the buildings, with sad faces. Like they lost something, but relieved they came out alive. People helping one another. Weird...
First, I must thank Lekter. Props, dude. Well, as to grea vocls; I think I've heard the best of 'em. and as to Seattle's best, I concede that Cornell's vocal acrobatics ARE amazing; more than amazing. Better than anyone's (with all due respect to Geof. Tate). But, for my money, Layne Staley IS THE SHIT! I worship Jimi. Adore Ann Wilson, Cobaine and Eddie Vedder. I like and respect Judy Collins, D. Shurr, Mildred Bailey, Ernestine A. and Ms. Bea Smith and so many others. But Layne,..
AND -from 5:32 to 5:53 he casually strolls up impossible octaves and his explosive vocal range is so fucking IMPOSSIBLE to duplicate or impersonate. Good luck, Karaoke fiends!!!
Anyone who EVER questions who, exactly, is the premiere male vocalist of this century need only hear this brilliantly performed, soulfully emoted, and incredibly heartbreaking song. Chris Cornell is beyond amazing, and there hasn't been anyone like him come passing through this way. probably won't ever be...
I love temple of the dog, mother love one and pearl jam. I have been rockin with these bansd for 20 years, I lived in seattle for several years. It was a great time with excellent herb. I would love to find an old rocker living in Colorado springs. Herb friendly only.

@shearcountry34 hey hey im half black and im not running around with a gun or sagging my pants, not everyone is a stereotype dude. lol you get a grip and ignore the idiot. But anyways, long live Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam!
ummm how bout most important who this song was written for but ANDY WOOD....if it wasnt for him and mother love bone who wouldnt have had half these groups we had today
Chris Cornell wrote this song for his roommate, Andrew Wood, of Mother Love Bone, who died of a herion overdose. If you don't like this song, shame on you.
@robpavi1 i know what you mean, bro. but, you know even after my first ex turned my two oldest children against me (daughter named Faith, ironic), my other ex turned my two youngest sons against eachother and the child support people want a full 85% of my income (not really sure how that is going to turn out since uncle sam usually wants 20% for taxes) the truth is that life is what you make it. don't let the f-ckers get you down.
Though this song was written for Andrew Wood, the lyrics just as easily work for Layne Staley. Cobain too. But when I hear this song, I think of Staley (and Hendrix). But, in any case, it's a excellent song. The musicians do their thing perfectly. And Cornell has never been better. I'll go on playing this for many years.
this 4th of july weekend i dedicate this song to all the fallin soldiers and all of yu alive protecting us each day thank you Love this song and all that fight for us every day to stay alive
R.I.P. John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, John Bonham, George Harrison, Cliff Burton, Dimebag Darrell, Keith Moon, Randy Rhoads, and every other pivotal rock star who has passed on. We appreciate your efforts and your contributions to this genre we call our own- ROCK N' ROLL FOREVER!!
Perfect Sound!!!

slimhefty76 6 months ago

Shit, Temple of the Dog and Mad Season all but slipped under the radar. Chris and Layne were and still are the true lyricists of grunge.

@laithlaith91 Actually, Chris is a Heldentenor, not a High Baritone. A high baritone is more like Layne Stanley.
eriot100 7 months ago
@eriot100 Chris is a true baritone, he can comfortably sing low notes such as G#2 in beyond the wheel demo and his lowest note is a B1 I think
Lawldudz 4 months ago
Why does this singer sound so much like the vocalist of Van Halen?
UnpopularPoppy 7 months ago
@UnpopularPoppy coz they're both High Baritones (voice type) if u dont knw wat I mean, u shud look up voice types I guess
laithlaith91 7 months ago
