I went to NSU to play tennis for the Demons it was the same time Joe Delaney attended NSU I have excellent memories of him. On several occasions he gave us a ride in his blue car to the tennis courts. It is so sad to loose people like him.
He was an excellent football players, fast as hell!! I'll never forget get you because you were a very kind person that touched the lives of many people. RIP Joe.
Im a baseball fan from Mexico, not knowing much about players and/or rules of NFL; but when I saw this video of a TRUE HERO like Mr. Delaney, just thinking to myself: if MLB retired No. 42 of ALL BASEBALLS TEAMS in honor of Jackie Robinson for what he meant in MLB, shouldn't NFL make a BIG honor to this man for his heroic action, giving up his life to save others, so NO ONE forget about him and his legacy?.
I only got youtube account so i could comment on Joe Delaney. This guy is a true hero. I live in Australia and his story has found me. What an amazing man. "They dont build em like that any more" I'd be proud as anything to be a "Delaney" He could have been one of the all time greats on the field, no doubt.
The heroic actions of Leonard Pope should revive the memory of this incident. i must admit that mine was quite dim. I admire the selfless acts by Joe Delaney and the entire story was just overwhelmingly sad.
Maybe someone should tell these new guys coming into the NFL two stories of how to be. Joe Delaney and ummm....(Chris Henry, Randy Moss, Steve McNair, Ray Lewis, Rae Carruth, Plaxico Burress, ect...) Lots of idiots, few heros. Thank you #37. I can at least tell my kids about you.
Joe Delaney could have been one of the greatest players in NFL history, but instead he proved himself to be one of the greatest men in NFL history. I as a Chiefs fan, the game of football and all of humanity suffered a loss that day that should never be forgotten. Thanks for keeping his memory alive.
What can you say about an individual who sacrifices his life to try and save others? Indeed, it's really sad that no one remembers who this special man was. Truly sad. RIP Joe Delaney.
yes such a great tribute. coming soon in his neighbor were all his family and friends reside in Haughton they have just posted soon coming THE JOE DELANEY PARK special thanks to the chiefs
One of my favorite RB's when I was a kid. Him and Joe Cribbs had a similiar fly running style and look on the field. A true gift from Heaven whose name is most definately in the Book Of Life.
Joe had a wife and 3 kid's. Joe could not swim. He dived in that "pond" and tried to save 3 kids with 2 dying. Joe helped save one child while also dying. What Joe did was obviously commendable maybe saintly. But in the sum of arithmetic. It was likely not the best decision. What the heck were children doing/allowed to swim in that construction pond right next door to amusement park? I guarantee you today that would never have happened. Joe was a good NFL RB needing to learn to cut back inside
the athletic conference my school is part of is named after him. every year at the final game of the basketball tournament we have a moment of silence for him
the song that is no longer played is Where'd You Go, by Fort Minor. It is now replaced by a different song, the one you hear now. Old song was much better, IMO.
Great video! To say Joe Delaney went above and beyond would be an understatement. He made a sacrifice very few would have.
Fifteen days after his heroic death, President Reagan awarded Delaney with the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian award. He has received numerous other awards and had several charities named in his honor.
Joe will NEVER be forgotten. Especially by the young boy whose life he gave his for. This world needs more beautiful souls like Joe's.
Im from Mexico and at the time of his death I was living in tijuana, I was 12 and remember reading the newspaper about his tragic death, it really made me feel sad, he is a legacy......
His story is one that touched my heart the second I heard about it growing up. One of the NFL pregame shows did a piece on him a few years ago, and they even went back to the little pond where he saved a life and ultimately gave his, touching!
please dont forget him? once u know what he did u cant forget him. sweetness paid tribute to him when he broke the all time rushing record i remember it well. im glad to see people paying tribute to such a great man who without thinking gave his life in hope of saving others. can u imagine what the world would be like if there were more people like joe delaney? fucking awesome thats what!
Wait a minute, I remember Joe Delaney and have never forgotten his story. He was an exceptional running back with vision, speed, and suprising strength for a 185lb back. I mean he was considered smallish even for that era. I was a fan of his, and James Brooks of the San Diego Chargers.
I grew up in the KC area. I was 13 when he died. I was crushed. I remember asking my parents why would someone who could not swim jump into water to save someone else. My dad told me that good adults feel a responsibility when they see children in trouble and will act selflessly to help. Years later I thought about this response and wondered if you can say anything better than that about a person. I'll never forget Joe Delaney.
He looked like the could have been one of the best ever. As a Raider fan I cleary remember how pissed off he made me as a rookie. I was sad when I heard he died.
Great tribute. My dad was a big Joe Delaney fan. Everything I read says he was a very generous, selfless man. It doesn't make his act any less selfless, but recent accounts seem to indicate that he didn't actually save a child, but did try to save 2 of 3 that were drowning. Nick Deriso at the Monroe News Star wrote a well researched article on this in June 2008. Joe is a model for today's athletes, young and old.
hi pxljames23. That's what I thought as well before reading the Deriso article. Do you have any updates on that or supporting information? Thanks, michael
i read an article in todays kc star...today is the 25th anniverary of his death (i cant believe its been that long) This is a FOOTBALL PLAYER....not pacman jones, not terrel owens, not warren sapp not chad johnson.....this is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.
I have a football program of NW state and read it prior to playing them in Natchitoches in 2000. I was honored to have played on the same field as that man and will be sure to tell my kids about him.
Wow, what a touching tribute to one of the beautiful souls who ever competed on the field. I remember hearing about his death shortly before the 1983 season, and I swear I had that rookie card from 0:53-1:04 in the video. You're right, those of us who remember him need to keep his memory alive. What a contrast he was to many of today's egomaniacs.
Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated wrote a very touching article about him I believe about five years ago near the 20th anniversary of his death. You can google it, and it is a very good read. God rest your soul Joe. I never knew him but I've loved the guy for going on a quarter century now.
I remember Delaney. That was ashame. He had a lot more class than a lot of today's athletes. He was the second young RB that died within a year. David Overstreet, a promising young Miami Dolphin runner, was killed in May or June 84 when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a gas tank and his car exploded. Oh, what might have been for those two and other athletes that died young(Michel Briere, Joe Roth, Ernie Davis, Ben Wilson, Korey Stringer, etc...).
And I will next watch your Derrick Thomas vid.. Another of the greatest athletes EVER.. And another tragic loss.. What's up with our teams being cursed.. Delaney and Thomas for the Chiefs.. Dick Howser of the Royals(best manager in the history of the game!), etc.. All class acts and taken before their time.. RIP to all of them!
5+ stars!!! I will never forget Joe Delaney.. He would have been one of the greatest EVER!! I am a KC native, 38 yrs old and a die-hard Chiefs and Royals fan my whole life! (KU fan as well) I still remember that day when my dad picked me up from school and we heard on the radio that he had died.. I was crushed.. And such a unselfish act.. Thank you for posting this!! I favorited before I even watched it, because it was about him.. RIP Joe..
yes, he was hero and the best running back nobody saw. I always get choked up whenever I stop and think about him,
