  • He was born in Caracas Venezuela. And he was Marcel Proust's lover

  • so so so beautiful!!!

  • Je suis chanteur francophone. Lorsque je parle je grassaille, mais quand je chante je roule les "R". C'est plus joli! Voilà!

  • Stunning! TY James for sending and x for posting.

  • en fait quand je l'ecoute je songe a l'italien avec les r. mais ca me donne un image d'amour (car je trouve que l'italien est la plus romatique) alors, la pronounciation du texte me donne un interpretation differente. mais c'est a moi

  • @charlottegrove2012 God, so beautiful. She gets it. And her diction is great [yes, you roll Rs in sung French. It's only very recently some people are doing otherwise, and it's not a good idea for the whole mechanism in many cases]. This song is so bittersweet. Hahn captures Hugo so well in it.

  • Nice. Beautiful song. Great Hahn. The best version I've ever heard is Nicholas Spanos's.

  • this is so beautiful!

  • La poésie française est la base de la mélodie française. Si on ne prononce pas bien le texte, le sens est perdu et c'est ridicule. À vous de savoir si elle prononce bien. For people who doesn't understand French: French poetry is the base of French melody. If we don't pronounce the text correctly, the meaning is lost and it sounds ridiculous. You decide if she has a good one.....

  • yeah

  • People, French sung is different than French spoken. Its true.

  • @Spiceofmadrid Not to mention that it's really hard to pronounce either way, and having two different sets of rules makes it even worse...

  • @magicminion I agree with you.

  • A delightful reunion of three great sensibilities:Hugo,Hahn and Graham

The result is iridescent beauty !!!

  • wattever, I really appreciate your insights. But Graham--not always my cup of tea--is a good to great stylist. It's amazing of how few current singers this can be said.

  • Well sung, but some of her "e" are too much "eu" or even "u". Americans think they sound more "proper" when they exaggerate the "e", it just sounds wrong. French singing and speaking requires clear but relaxed vowels, and secure and firm yet not over-emphasized consonants.

  • This song has one of the very rare examples in French of when a double consonant should be emphasized, literally exaggerated: 'accouRRaient", because it is the conditional, otherwise it will sound like the imparfait (accouraient). Graham here chooses a "not so happy" medium by simply rolling the Rs longer, which is not quite the same thing. As a bad example, "Depuis le jour où je me suis doNNée", you are NOT supposed to emphasize the N. Even the great Maggie Teyte sometimes got it wrong.

  • @wattever333 yeah ur rite! I've been speaking french for some time now and realized the diff between talking and singing and how to anunciate

  • Anybody who speaks French knows that I'm right. I'm not surprised I get thumbs down, most people don't speak French and most people in youtube are just here to fawn over their favorite divas, and to scare away those they perceive as "enemies". LOL

  • This is the youtube simpleton rule: if someone criticizes, he gets thumbs down, if he makes a compliment, he gets thumbs up. Therefore the only intelligence required to rate a comment is the ability to tell if a comment is a criticism or not. Any 7 yo can do that. LOL

I'm sure the people who put thumbs down don't even understand what I wrote. It just "sounds mean" therefore it must be bad. LOL

They probably also think that people who speak French are evil.

  • they don't like someone raising the bar. How can someone they were told by critics is good be doing something bad? I never said everything she does is bad, I said her pronounciation of certain sounds is not the best. oh my! what a terrible insult!

  • @wattever333 yes! all 3 of ur most recent paragraphs are totally right most ppl dont speak it and dont understand it I've heard many Americans butcher the language to death... and it bugs me how some Americans just don;t like "french". And yea there is no intelligence factor on Youtube you can;t critique anything....

  • @wattever333

    Agreed!

  • Hey, I'm singing this and I'd like your help! Just to make sure...the double R should be exaggerated a little? I thought it was the imperfect...am I wrong?

  • in French, double consonnants are NEVER emphasized, contrary to italian.

ONE exception: verbs that take 1 R in present and 2 Rs in future or conditional. Example: je mourais, normal R (I was dying); Je mourrai (I will die), je mourrais (I would die), emphasized R.

    Compare with nourrir normal R.

    Enjoy!

  • I love this song but can't place my consonants on the right note...

  • yeah i have that same problem too

  • i'm singing this for double juries! I wish everyone the best of luck with their auditions and juries and recitals!
