  • what if theres a shark in the water

  • I'd have to say that most everybody on here knows how to reply back to a person in dire need of finding a kayak that fits him/her well, and I truly appreciate that! Thank you!!!

  • ive been watching these videos and why do they let the fish go?

  • would you consider tying yourself to a kayac so you wont lose youre boat in the wind my emotion renagade will travel faster in the wind than i can swim

  • I keep a lead rope attached to my kayak, in the event I capsize in gusty winds, which I can grab onto, before my kayak blows away. I also have a lead rope attached to my paddle, that is attached to my kayak for the same reason. You are more prone to capsize when there are gusty winds.

  • Rio is made by wilderness

  • for the guy thats 6ft 6,I have been using a Nomad feel free sit on kyak and also a rio ,

the rio is a bit tight on the feet, but nomad is excellent, both are 3 meter long, and Ok in winds up to about 20 knots

. I am 6ft , large chest, and size 11 foot, nomad is ok for use up to 5 hours, rio about half that

  • ah man i remember when me and my best friend were 7th graders and we rode a 2 man kayak and we flipped in front of the high school canoe team and it the was longest minute of our life out in the water to get flip and get back on our kayak

  • im planning on getting a kayak, hopefully before next summer. safe to say, i'll be getting a sit on top. im glad they have that as an option.

  • thank you, i was sitting in the bay close to me thinking how do i get back on my sit in kayak if i fall off. and great now i know. The only other problem i have is pulling the kayak on the wheels down to the beach. the wheels keep falling off .

  • good, will try it with my bic ouassou

  • i will feel bad for any1 who has horns under their kayak when it goes upside down its gonna be a hell of a rape

  • chuck norris

  • 1:53

"So until next time, I'm Ken Whiting..."

Okay, so next time....who are you going to be?

  • very nice video.

  • Watch the 300 Pound marlin caught from a kayak video.

If you plan to do that, watch this video.

  • Much easier way to flip the yak is to reach underneath and pull a deckline or handle on the opposite side towards you.

  • ok, now show us this in the actual ocean.

I've swamped in the ocean in a sit-inside- and once you do, it's game over, swim that baby back in. Which takes unbelievable energy. I can roll, but don't often put the skirt on for time sake.

This is tougher to do than the vid makes it out to be, even with a sit-on-top, when you are yaking baits out past the breakers in big water. Be careful!

  • i own a emotion spitfire kayak are they good for fishing? i have not gone out on it yet and would like to know if i made the right choice

  • Wow !!!! amazing.

  • 1:59....... I just pissed myself!!!!!!!

  • I tried a prowler 13 to day in winter conditions & it performed well. It's worth it to take the time to make mistakes on purpose in order to see where you're at. I can't wait to get my prowler so I can stop bummin' kayaks

  • Great Tip! Thanks! This will be very helpful next time I kayak.

  • 1:19 was a vital tip for me. And seeing that guy come back to his kayak at 1:43 in such rough turbulent waters really encouraged me. Don't worry, I know it requires a lot of practice, but the things is, I've been dreaming of crossing the sea from Salvador, Brazil to Itaparica Island(12 Nautic miles far) by kayak and of course a big concern has always been coming back to the kayak in case I fall. Now the waters here at the bay are way less turbulent than that. With practice I can manage it.

  • I was dropping hints left and right, but Santa didn't bring me a sit on top kayak :(

  • I am new to kayaking and went fishing out in the ocean, about 3 miles out. While trolling for fish I got flipped over. Fortunately, I had leashed everything and stowed anything that didn't need to be out. This video is the only instruction I got on getting back up, and it worked great!!! Thank you. The water was really cold, so I am glad I didn't have to struggle with it. Your videos are awesome!

  • I just did training on getting back on a sit top, just like the video. It's actually easier than I expected. You need a wetsuit in the ocean or you increase the odds of freezing prior to getting back on. Even with a wetsuit, it was very cold in Northern Ca, ocean water. thx for the video.

  • @MrMDM2007 Down here in Brazil it's much better :o) The water is just perfect and in case you fall your only concern is coming back to the kayak.

  • What do you do if a shark approaches you?

  • Do sit on tops tip more easily? I have a sit in and have never come close to tipping in 8 years.

  • i have all of my stuff bungied but would it fall out

  • For some reason I just push on the kayak and get myself up then sit on the kayak seat and I didnt have to lie on the kayak at all O.o I only started kayak 3 days ago and I flip a lot so I kind of got used to climbing back in xD

  • Glad you posted this, very important to know this.

  • I was taught you hold the paddle across the yak clamping it to the handles with your hands to make a pontoon-that way when you lift onto the kayak it can't flip over also when there are 2 people you make a bridge across both yaks both people clamping the paddle across the boats

  • I'm 6'6" tall...what kind of sit on top kayak is out there for me?

  • @WBHkungfu Try the Ocean Kayak Trident 13 or 15. The other option is the Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game. It's extra big and ultra stable.

  • @KayakFishingTales Thanks, I have been checking these out. I wonder if there is a sit in kayak for tall people too? I've been checking out Wilderness Systems kayaks, Perception kayaks, Emotion kayaks, Romany kayaks, Ocean kayaks and a few others but I can't decide on which one to buy. They all seem pretty good.

  • @KayakFishingTales

I concur! I had a gentlemen (intern) from Hanover Germany this past fall, he LOVED kayak and I took him out for a 4 hour paddle through NW Ohio in the Big game Angler. At 6' 8" tall he simply pushed the foot pegs to the end of the line and his knees showed the perfect bend, perfect for comfortable paddling I mean. At 6' 6" you'll be in a similar position with even more flexibility.

Again, we went out in the Ocean Kayak Big Game Angler

    Good Luck

  • @WBHkungfu I'm about the same height and my TekSport 290 is fantastic.

  • @lostlewis16 Hey thanks for the help. I like KOW's website but I can't find their Teksport kayaks in the US? They seem almost identical to Ocean kayaks. I guess I should rent before I buy although where I live it would probably be better just to buy one.

  • @WBHkungfu 6`6"!!!! man im 6`2" and ihave trouble!!!

  • @WBHkungfu The point 65 tequila works for me, 6'5

  • @cccpkingu Hey thanks cccpkingu!

  • @WBHkungfu The Ocean kayak Drifter...im 6ft 7.....its an awsome kayak!

  • @WBHkungfu The new 2012 Wilderness Systems Ride 135 may be the ticket for you. Check it out on their website, just google it.

  • @hpiguy Hi hpiguy, thanks for the info. I will check it out asap! :)

  • @WBHkungfu Any time. If you are looking for a less expensive option for bigger guys you can also look at the Lifetime Sport Fisher. It has videos on here. I have one. Very stable, high weight capacity. But it's no speed demon, it's a fishing kayak.

  • @WBHkungfu wilderness systems tarpon 160 would be perfect for you being tall (like me)

  • @MrSnubzy Hey MrSnubzy, thanks for your help too! :)

I just wish that kayak manufacturers would make sit in kayaks for us taller people. The feeling of sitting on top of a kayak doesn't sit with me very well, hehe.

  • @WBHkungfu no prob :). I was also looking at sit in kayaks and found them all way too small. I was a bit worried about getting a sit on top at first, but after trying a few Ocean Kayak and the Tarpon 160 I was sold on the Tarpon. It has sit inside performance but all the benefits of being sit on top (dangling legs over side, easy re-entry etc). I have taken it out in the ocean and have been no problems, it cuts through the water and tracks like an arrow. The seat is best in class too.

  • I recommend using a paddle leash attached to your kayak, in the event you capsize during gusty wind conditions, so you kayak doesn't blow away faster than you can swim....

  • Thanks... It took me four times in my pool practicing before I could do self rescue. Not everyone has the upper body strength to get back in. The Wilderness Tarpon 120 has a 14 inch sides. Hard to get over for me. One thing I did to help was to have some rope attached to the yak, so I can quickly stow in the paddle.

Time to reenter may be a critical factor. I kayak with alligators...he he.

my DOUBLE paddle rescue sling outrigger can be found on yahoo group Floridakayakers.

  • to the MORON who said "can you teach us to walk"..you are showing your ignorance. THIS VIDEO SAVED ME LAST WEEK WHEN I FLIPPED. The first thing I remembered was grab the paddle and the yak. YOU GO IN THE CENTER...OF THE YAK TO MATCH YOUR CENTER OF GRAVITY TO THE KAYAK'S. I practiced this maneuver self rescue...and don't have the strength so I designed a rescue sling. My friend put her yak in front of mine due to the current to help stabilize. STFU if you don't have something useful to add.

  • when you suddenly get plunged into 72 degree water...it is REALLY nice to have practiced a self rescue..and immediately know the steps...grab the paddle, grab the yak..walk to high ground (if possible) ...don't just tread water...(if needed secure the yak). Flip the yak. Secure the paddle. Stabilize the yak if you can.

    Then re-enter in the center.

to stabilize the yak..have a friend come beside.

OR sling the paddle across & put on a paddle float.

or in "current" have friend YAk in front

  • Should have watched this first! :)

  • Great vid of a re-entry! But I think your turning the boat over the hard way, spending too much energy on something so simple. All you need to do is reach under the kayak to the other side, grab a carry handle or the seat straps and pull twards you, the kayak will easily flip back over.

  • man i cant wait to try my OK trident prowler 11. the more vids i watch the more i like my choice. but all i can do it stair at it in my garage until thurs day :( cant wait to test her out. really hoping i like it cause idk if they can be returned if its not for me.

  • One effective way to re-enter any kayak after falling off its crawling to the cockpit (or seat) from the stern keeping your legs open, surfing board wise.

  • Great idea... they call this "the ladder"

sometimes there is a lot of stuff to crawl over..and there is nothing to grab onto.

folks need to practice...to figure out what will work for them.

I'm too weak for the ladder and it is way too slippery...BUT I can get up enough to hold on..and kick or paddle.

This is a great alternative. and may work better in some situations.

  • @sanjuanx: Yup, my friends call this the "cowboy" method because you "mount" the kayak like the wild-west movie cowboys, slow-motion "jumping" onto the rear of the 'yak, one leg on each side, and working your way up into the "saddle". I can tell you from experience that it will work, but it is not as quick or elegant as some other methods.

  • i have a traditional kayak. does that mean im screwed if it tips upside down in the ocean?

  • Nope... You're not screwed, but it will take practice to learn a re-entry with a sit-inside kayak. We'll post the technique soon. Truth be told though... if you're going to paddle a sit-inside kayak in the ocean a lot, you should really consider learning the roll! It will change the sport of kayaking for you!!

  • @XxBeatbusterxX It's a good idea to have a friend with you when doing any sort of kayaking or canoeing. Having a friend in another kayak to assist you with t rescue is always handy to empty the water out of the traditional style of kayak.

  • @XxBeatbusterxX No it doesnt mean your screwed this is just a way of marketing sit on top kayaks anyway in a sit in kayak if you have a spray deck you can just do a simple roll

  • what does it mean that a kayak is self bailing?

  • when water gets into the kayak you do not need to take the water out it goes out by itself

  • Sit on top kayaks have scupper holes the water goes out.

  • yup lots of practice needed . Its a bit tough in the surf !

  • nice ending
