This is why folks like Nathan Drake more then the protagonists of other titles. Naughty Dog isn't afraid to let the guy get the shit kicked out of him on a fairly regular basis. It humanizes him to an extent, and makes us want to see him succeed despite his hardships. That's something that is harder to pull off in a first person game, since it's considerably tougher to see your character getting thrashed from inside of his own head.
