  • Outstanding musicians and musicianship. They are some of the finest in the business for sure. Every time I hear any of them play I stop what I am doing and listen!!

  • It's Jazz. No doubt. These are some finest musicians alive for sure . In their musicianship you can feel the joy. Joy. That's what music is about.

  • Fond memories, this is the soundtrack of my youth, and I feel blessed for it!

  • no words!

  • !!!(",)!!!

  • I traded fours with Tom Scott today

  • More than 20 years i m listening this wonderfull title , i will always love it !!

  • @kolson006 :me too, it is still the same as when I heard for the first time

  • Charlie "Bird" Parker killed himself with drugs before he ever realized his full talent.

Yet, Sanborn and Scott have carried the torch for some time.

Someone has to make the "spark' before there is a flame.

Just like "Neopolitian Ice Cream"... I could not tell you who of the three I liked the most.

    Depends on the mood.

  • ...MichaeI: Oh that's not true I bust my ass to get a part right!

Agent: Yes, and you bust everybody else's ass too!

Here's a guy who's got 3 Weeks for Rehearsing. And all you're worried about is

whether Tolstoy can...walk when he's dying

    or walk when he's talking--?

Michael: Oh that guy's an idiot and...

Agent: Michael, they can't all be idiots.

What a great great Film and what great great actors and music!! You hardly have films like these today :(

  • @telarc That'd be the 1-string guitar he's made his own then?

  • A pitty people have to compare musicians against each other. The important thing is that the music fills your soul and give you good experience. Some like bebop and some like smooth jazz. Theres room for both. What a great composer Dave Grusin is!

  • I can see most of the kids today "Where is the sample button?" Awesome stuff

  • Oh my God, Perfect music for the soul......superb

  • ladies & gentleman... the real music!!

  • To eskimoposh: So many idiots, so few bullets. Your idea of Talent is your own rendition of Tip Toe Through The Tulips with a Kazoo. These are Kings in their world. You are a pale version of gummby who is bent by the will from less than nothing. Do not think about that to long, I'm sure it will cause even more damage.

BT Tucson p.s. Try harder, there is always hope for us all. or not.

  • Troll.

  • @eskimoposh sfigato

  • Seems like Scott is a sell out with his short hair.....lol

  • All of these people are wonderful. I love Dave Grusin's piano in the movie "On golden pond". This is a great video!

  • I first came across Ritenour..70 s....the rest is history.....the collaborations over the years are priceless! God given talent.....all of em.

  • please ! I look for - valdez in the country - performed by lee ritenour...can you help me. thanks

  • I will never get tired of their music. Dave plays sweetly yet profound, Tom is so funky even on mellow jazz songs!

  • this is a perfect example of jazz and what it stands for.

tom i hope to be as good as u

  • Jazz is indeed, an incredible art form, and it's due in part to artists like Tom Scott , Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin, they were a part of my early cultural development in the 70's, matter of fact, the very first contemporary jazz album I ever bought was a Tom Scott LP (Intimate Strangers)...You know, the so-called mainstream media doesn't give the same coverage to jazz musicians as they do these commercialized clowns in pop/rock, rap and r&b, are these real musicians still active on the scene?

  • This is a pop song in the video. Dave Grusin made lots of money writing pop songs. Especially the one's for the movies. Go ez tiger. P.S. they are still active on the seen, to answer your question.

  • I'm not sure I'd classify Mountain Dance as a pop song.

It is true that Grusin made most of his cash writing music for movies and TV though...

  • ...and playing along with Pop artists... Vinnie Colaiuta in concert with Sting a few weeks ago ;-)

  • WHAT AN AMAZING STYLE OF MUSIC!!!

  • Can someone tellme the album where this track is from???

  • Its a double album (two cds) called something like GRP live (GRP = Grusin ROsen Productions, this label has awesome some jazz!!). It features Diane Schur and all these guys in one cd and a he other cd is full Chick Corea, both live. I use to have long ago, lost it when they stole my house, :(

  • DIOS existe!!!!!

  • What a terrific version of "An Actors Life". Tom Scott plays the sax just like Ernie Watts in the original. Its funny when they showed the crowds and Japanese Bullet Train when the song began because Gruisin captured the feel of New York City in the early eighties when he composed this tune for the movie Tootsie. Some people don't like this song because they don't really see it as jazz but more of a movie tune like Mountain Dance but to me this very much jazz.

  • Good point. I think that most people associate with the word jazz something darker, "clubbier" and more artsy. This tune -IMHO - is definitely too darn beautiful to match the definition above. So it might be labeled as elevator muzak by some. i donßt care. I love the mix of Irish and African American influences. Definitely Aaron Copland/George Gershwin heritage. Even always smiling Lee Ritenour looks in awe when

Dave Grusin plays that wonderful gospel-influenced bit on the piano at 6:40.

  • jazz is a broad genre of music. it encompasses all different styles of music. jazz is pretty much the music that society doesn't know what to call it so they generalize it as jazz

  • I agree totally with what you ve just said...

    Jazz is great!!!

  • Salut,

On ne va pas encore remettre tout ça sur le tapis. Entre East et West ??? Je suis East mais cela ne m'a jamais empêcher d'écouter Dave Grusin qu'en j'aime particulièrement.

  • I don't know. It sounds to me like Dave has some strings layered on that acoustic piano sound. You can hear it a couple of times when the music breaks down and at the very end. Anyhoo, these were (and are!) some contemporary jazz heavyweights and they are gettin' it in!!

  • It's sooo beautiful and just carry me away.

  • I LOVE happy music!

  • Wow I love this one...

    Dave Grusin - Piano

    Lee Ritenour - Guitar

    Tom Scott - sax

    LOve JAZZ!!

  • you have no clue what your talking about you stupid frog bastard

  • with some like this tune...hopefulness.thank to DG/LR

  • to g18553s, I said Kenny G is shrill, I suppose it's the Soprano Sax I dont like, if I heard Kenny G play a Tenor he probably is a great Saxman.

  • nope...he had a super edgy mouthpiece....still....

  • What do you consider shrill? Why do you think Kenny G is shrill? Is it that he dominates the tunes too much?

  • anytime I hear Kenn G I shut him off, the most irritating, monotonous, shirll stuff I have ever heard and I have been a jazz drummer for many years.

  • Thank you!

  • Yeah, you guys hate Kenny G and you've been playing jazz for a long time - Kenny G has made millions, sold millions of copies, [ENJOYS] what he does for a living.

You guys on the other hand are nobody's who aren't making tons of money playing the sax. You're just bitching on YouTube.

  • Kenny G is a well MARKETED performer. He has skills on the sax but his music is repetitive. And it SELLS. I won't fault him on that. There are alot of better music makers than he is but it's all about who promotes him. I don't hate him at all, I just think his music is not that great.

  • Does Grusin has his piano rigged with some MIDI gear to produce those synth stabs? Or is it some other player doing it? It's way too in sync with Dave's playing.

  • Two players, definitely.

  • I'd prefer to listen ernie watts on tenor sax. He's much better than Scott.

  • Dude, you don't know good sax when you hear it, if you are dissing Tom Scott. Go back to school.

  • Tom Scott only good on alto, for tenor, Earnie Watts is the champ all the time.

  • Bennie Carter is the champ of all time on alto. Tenor, give me Sonny Rollins.

  • you have got to be kidding me. Serious? The problem with cool jazz is that it gets stigmatized as being lightweight jazz, and that is not fair. But at the same time, what kind of ranking could be given serious consideration if it has Kenny G and Dave Koz on that list? That should be the Lightweight Jazz Ratings... of course, that is the stigma talking. Some people need to open their ears and go back to school.

  • i agree with you completely...though i am a fan of new school jazz there is no way Kenny G and Dave Koz could be listed with legends such a Parker and Cannonball...joke

  • That is the most rediculous sax rating i have ever seen. Kenny G top 3, LOL. Tom Scott is good, but above Bird. Gimme a break!

  • Charlie "Bird" Parker second to Tom Scott?!?!?!...i think you need to re-evaluate and do some sax research...and if we are comparing new school guys how do you leave out players such as David Sanborn and Gerald Albright?

  • Tenor Champ ranking :

    1. Earnie Watts

    2. Boney James

    3. Kenny G

    Alto Champ Ranking:

    1. Tom Scott

    2. Charlie Parker

    3. Dave Koz

  • Tenor ranking:

    MICHAEL BRECKER

    Bob Berg

    Joshua Redman

    defenitly NOT Kenny G

    Alto:

    Kenny Garrett

    Eric Marienthal

    Tom Scott

  • Never compare players and rank them as best...rather than Personal favorite.......also...dont forget Cannonball Adderley somewhere on that alto list and John Coltrane somewhere on that tenor list :P

  • great video the 3 are fine, i saw Lee, with the preuano and in the bass Abraham Laboriel, excellent concert too.I see you like la good music, do tou knowa geoxtigma, see them in you tube, i write you later.

  • this songs really says it****

  • the name of this theme is an actor´s life

  • yeh does anyone no whhat song this is? its awesome. i love tom scott.
