I have no idea what this is all technology changes. At its worst it allows (makes it cheaper/safer) for the military to capitalize on giant holes in our legal system (and the international legal system). The technology is not the problem, its the lack of legal ramifications that's the problem.
If it saves soldier's lives, then it's probably for the best. Although just not going to war would also save soldier's lives, but that's crazy talk. We need to go to war...who else is going to defend our access to oil. Besides, it's America's god given right to invade other countries and protect their resources..right? Oh wait, it's called defending freedom..sorry, I forgot. Because we all know the only reason soldiers are in the middle east right now is to defend the rights of those people.
how come small time entrepreneurs and college interns can make the some kinda robots as the military where they can do the same same thing but the military spends billions of dollars?
@MrSteelbeast You do realize that all of the American casualties in this decade long war are less than all a month's worth of casualties in Vietnam. There are many days in Afghanistan where 60+ insurgents are killed without a single American death.
Who the hell are you to cheer for those sexist theocratic cavemen? They don't want girls going to school, they force women to cover their faces, and they follow a prophet who was a pedophile and a murderer.
I loooooooove Kaj!! He's an amazing journalist and really funny, without ever loosing his focus. I could watch him all day. Vanguard rocks, but Kaj rocks even more!!!! :)
@hojima Dunno what you are talking about. Military guys are usually fit and in perfect shape and very trim. Therefore, they are usually quite attractive. Compare a normal military man to a normal fat ass American and decide which one you would want to fuck if you were a female.
DAmn, how did I know you were German? Wir haben eure ärsche in Weltkrieg eins und Weltkrieg zwei gekickt, Scheißekopf. So unless you consider yourself not a real enemy, then we most deffinately have fought a real war. So immer mit der Ruhe. Niemand will hören, was Sie zu sagen haben.
@KarelYalek We did already, it was called World War Two. Remember that, when Europe was getting it's ass handed to it and America turned the tables on the Nazis?
@KarelYalek Damn how did I know you were German? Wir haben ihre ärsche in Weltkrieg eins und Weltkrieg zwei gekickt. Scheißekopf. So unless you don't consider yourself a real enemy, then we did figt a real war. So immer mit der Ruhe.
Yeh that would be a smart and as fast as the person who is remotely operating the robot. Let`s say i was holding people hostage or holed up and armed. If isaw the robot coming and just hid behind a place where the operator could not see me. I let the robot go by and quickly disarm it and now I have another weapon to kill my hostages . If I flip it over it is no good.
I wouldn't be too confortable being in the same room where a freaking robot carrying an aut. shotgun is roaming around. Especially if had windows 7 installed in it! Internal Error 123098! RUUUUNN FUUUUUUCK!
The problem here is the lack of tough questions. He should ask "do you think that this dimension of technology putting so much distance between the target and the person pulling the trigger has positive or negative effects overall" and then explore along similar lines. It's still enjoyable and informative I'd just prefer more depth.
what about self destructive robots every time they hit an enemy they explode that would be better insted of letting the enemy know and understand your tech.
Propaganda? Som d.bag reporter covering the Army is propaganda? The military is truely keeping America safe. It's us vs. the 3rd. This is why you can be a fag, safe @ home and wear tapered jeans
do all you guys talkin about people hacking these machines really think that the machine's designers haven't thought about that? I mean I highly doubt anyone here can think of a way to take down one of these robots off of the top of their heads.
@Forrest569 Not really, firearm designers/manufacturers have always considered their products conductive to peace. They say that since they sell their arms to the "good guys" (US army and such) the inferiorly armed "bad guys" are more likely to give up and be peaceful.
I think the 'fear' of robot weapons and civilian death number is so blown out of proportion is sad. These tools are made so we don't have high numbers. Don't believe me? Look at the civilian death numbers from ANY other war.
Wars will always happen, at lest we are trying to make them as civil as possible. Or would you rather we nuke em?
P.S. I am against the current wars, and total ignorance of science.
It seems cowardly to me to pit people who believe so much in something or are in such need of something that they're willing to risk their lives for it versus people who have so much money that they can destroy & murder not necessarily out of conviction or need but out of idle desire to get their way because there's no actual risk in doing so.
I like that predator. I myself am a nerd. Turning war into a video game. I've been sure of this for a while, but when I saw Surrogates, the movie that came out a few months ago, it generated a very clear picture. I don't think that we will have humanoid robots, but the idea of those spawn points where one dies you just send out more, thats going to be very real very soon. Same for RTS games and tacticians.
Our technology DOES work, we just don't have the spine to do it. A WW2 general would have simply bombed every village suspected to harbour terrorists, and be done with it.
The main problem of armed robotic units is their inevitable fall into your enemy's hands - and just turned against you in the less terrible scenario, or made into a blueprint for more sophisticated ones by your enemy in the worst case.
@StrumVogel the Taliban doesn't need to use them all on its own - it can send them across to Pakistan which does have the material resources and manpower to do that.
American Unmanned Aerial Vehicles have to be blown up with an airstrike if they become unmanageable so they won't be given across to arms merchant dealers. The US still has the advantage when it comes to UAVs and ARUs - if one arms dealer sells the remnants to Russia/China etc - you can say goodbye to that too.
I'm sure nowadays they will have some sort of failsafe for situations like that. Whether it be to deprogram the unit from headquarters or have the unit self-destruct if caught. Also, they can develop a system which must utilize fingerprint identification - voice identification... the main problem is that the military must come up with these failsafe situations - personally, I think the self destruction would be the best.
