Well it's obvious he is not playing bass here nor did he play bass on any of their hit records. (That was primarily Joe Osborne, well regarded studio musician) Still, Mr. Grill's voice and charming good looks were a big part of the Grass Roots success.
@Straydogger Major props to Rob Grill (RIP) but I'm guessing he couldn't play that fairly intense bass line and handle the vocals and work the crowd, all at the same time. I'm positive he played the bass on the studio version though and that may be his bass line backing up the live performance.
A great piece of the past is now gone,Rob Grill. I still blast Midnight Confession when i am driving!!!!!!! I have the remake of that song and it isgreat,Rob still had it til the end!!!!! You will be missed................Frank,Frisco,Tx.
It is with great sadness that I tell all Grassroots fans that Rob Grill died today, July 12, 2011. He was in coma for a week from a fall. He'd been in poor health for quite some time. When people wonder why old guys like Grill still play, it's not only to keep the memory of their past greatness alive, it's to keep THEM alive. Grill and co. hadn't been preforming much as of late. Got to keep busy. RIP, Rob!!
He's using some kind of vocal augmentation system I'm not familiar with. It's not just lip-synching; it's something more complicated than that, that seems to kick in automatically on the higher notes. Anybody know what it is?
EXCELLENT, how I wish that the older(wiser) groups could teach those growing up now about the real beginnings of pop/rock that they might know just where the music comes from. Be blessed, rev.jon
I finally got to se Rob and the guys in March! What a nice guy. He signed my cd, my t-shirt and even let my husband take a picture of me with him. He is AWESOME!!!
My wife and I went on an 'Oldies' cruise a couple years ago...Grassroots, Paul Revere, the Comets, the Buckinghams... wonderful week of memories on the high seas! Rob Grill is one hell of a guy...down to earth and the REAL DEAL! These guys...and countless other groups...are instrumental in making our younger days so memorable. They add to the soundtrack of our lives, folks...enjoy!
I saw Rob Grill and The Grass Roots perform a couple of years ago in San Diego. After the concert, Rob and the group came down from the stage and intermingled with the audience. A real down to earth bunch of guys who seem to really appreciate their fans.
I saw them perform the other night (9/27/08)and they were fabulous! Definitely missed Rob, as he was not feeling well, but loved that Dusty!! What a guy.
Haha, wat do u expect after 40 years? For that he is 64 something in this video he still looks really good. He was hell of a good lookin guy in the 60ies and I dont know anyone who still looks good 40 years later. He is great and we are lucky that he still performs. There are few singers frm the 60ies who still perform regularly and with so much passion as Rob does. we shud b really grateful and touch wood that his health stays in a good shape so that we can see and hear more ..
@oOMadhuriOo lol wow, i wrote that a year ago! true, absolutely right..but Don Henley (lead singer of the Eagles) he has gotten more attractive with age, funny how that happens? I found Rob Grill VERY attractive in that 1968 midnight confessions vid, you agree? I am very greatful he is doing well and singing ! Thank God !!
Yeah, Rob Grill looked amazingly awesome in that video above all when he sings the 2nd strophe (where he smiles). My heart starts melting when I see him smilin. You definitely need to see Show #21 of "Playboy after dark" where they perform "Bella Linda" and "Midnight confessions"(in my favs). He looks gorgeous there (without mustache). But he always used 2 look great when he smiled. Difficult to describe isnt it? Never seen a guy as good lookin as him with long hair and mustache ;)
I have seen a couple of old pictures and a few videos. Unfortunately there are not much pictures frm the time when he was young and he is hardly ever smiling. You shud c The Bella Linda performance in playboy after dark. U'll definitely love that video. I am not too much fond of his crooked teeth (basically I love nice ones :P) but still he looked damn good. There is a certain thing about him. And the mustaches suited him well too ... whatta man he used to be ;)
Oh yea, the mustache. We all loved this guy with his mustache. It was back in the day when we were young teens and no one even knew his name. Just the Grass Roots lead singer. We all loved the mustache.
From what others have told me of Rob, he is a very nice guy and really loves the fans! Rock on Rob! I hope to see him in concert after he has his knee surgery and recovers from it!
People have stated that Rob is very rude, I don't know about that. But I do know that his group made some timeless classics! I enjoy every song that they hit the charts with and still do. I hope he has recovered from his serious operations and keeps performing. ROCK ON ROB!
Due to a couple of degrees of separation, we got to casually know Rob and his wife Nancy; they are both incredibly nice, down-to-earth, easy-going, FUNNY people. In fact, we've never heard anything bad about Rob from anyone; anytime he's been brought up in conversation with either of us, it's usually about his great sense of humor. We're both amazed whenever we hear a Rob Grill and the Grass Roots song....it seems to sound better every time! It couldn't be said any better: ROCK ON ROB!
