We need to go back to a standard pitch of C=256, which corresponds to A=430-432. Giuseppe Verdi himself wanted A=432 as the univeral standard.
On my page, there are a couple of examples by Piero Cappuccilli demonstrating the difference between the high, unnatural tuning and the true "Verdi tuning." There is also a new recording of an amateur chorus from the Schiller Institute performing Beethoven's 9th symphony at C=256, with very good results. Just listen to the double fugue!
After 35 years we can all certify that Tebaldi was right. Strained voices without personality and individuality, absurdly extended orchestras with tuning which destroys the human voice. (sigh)
I think she didn't predict: she TOLD us what the problem was and was going to be. Proof of her genious. If we only had people like her, Callas, Ponselle, Corelli, Nilsson, Flagstad, Schipa, etc, etc, ETC, around today to make use of their great intelligence and greatness!
I have met Kiri Te Kanawa, who said she attended one of Renate Tebaldi's concerts. She said that she was one of the greats. Kiri did think that of all voices she heard, Elvis Presley had the best.
And what Tebaldi is suggesting here, is already happening (thankfully) in baroque where diapason by the greatest maestros is finally set lower than say in the 70s. And by the way, there's no document of your darling Maria singing either Norma or Lucia in the written key so according to your poor standards she was unable too...isn't it time you let this hatred of yours towards all other singers that people sometimes prefer to Callas let go?
look for Cappuccilli's video on pitching where he demonstrates exactly what Tebaldi is referring to. Was he also making excuses for not singing higher? Besides the fact that Gruberova is singing norma nowadays is proof of what Tebaldi is saying.
@maipisimo67 - she is right in everything she says here. I did not know she was called the Italian Flagstad but am not surprised. When my daughter was very young, she said she could walk into the living room and not be sure if I was listening to Flagstad or Tebaldi - the timbre has much in common. She could hear if it was Callas even at the age of five, and if it happened to be Cecilia Bartoli on the radio, she asked me to turn it off. Good for her!
@maipisimo67 I agree she is and you are right but apart they could do "business' as you say , they work hard to offer what they do. she is more than business I think you agree
@LohengrinT . If you are so interested in opera, learn some Italian to begin with. Tebaldi is commenting on the gradual tuning of orchestras in our day to a pitch higher than A-440, which means that most operatic scores of the 18th-and 19th-centuries are probably performed almost a whole tone above what was standard at the time of their composition, and how this affects contemporary operatic performance in general, and moreover does not reflect the intention of the composers.
She is the most beautiful DIVA ever!!! I miss her...

@ peque1204 She is saying that today's orchestras are tuned to a higher pitch
than the composers originally intended
and it is ruining singers' voices..
Mi espanol es muy limitado pero...
La Tebaldi dice que las orquestras de
hoy estan tocando las notas mas alta
que los compositores escribieron y es
muy mal para las voces de las cantantes.

Isn't it ironic that in the 70s she's predicting exactly what the problem in opera is nowadays? Norma, Aida, Boheme all sung by tiny voices.

She is correct in all her assertions, and we can see concrete and tragic examples of this today. What a magnificent artist she was! Brava Tebaldi!
