Hi I'm trying to make a video montage with different clips and background audio. I got the clips from one computer and saved them on a jump drive and started making the MMW video on another computer using the clips and audio from the jump drive. I put them all together and tried to publish the movie but I keep getting the same error message as @ashleytwaynelovesu any advise or suggestions of what I can do to get this video on youtube?
@TyHart71 To avoid problems, you should have all the files needed for your project on the hard drive of the computer that you'll be working on. Using removable media like a USB drive and going from one computer to another usually won't work. Copy all files to the hard drive and start over. It's likely easier to start fresh than to relocate individual files and correct the connections.
can anyone help me? i cant save my video it says " windows movie maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original sources file used in ur movie is stil available ,that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free disk space" pls help!! ^__^
@ashleytwaynelovesu Sounds like you are trying to make your WMM project from the camera memory card. Either that or you have moved the original files to another location or renamed the originals. Try uploading the original files to a folder on the computer then redirect WMM to that folder. Never, relocate or rename files until you're finished with your project and rendered the video.
@Mypinksocksx With Windows Movie Maker you can use ALT + Enter to get full screen or you may see a button below the preview window. Just remember that previews in full screen mode, don't look as good as the finished product.
If your picture seems squished... make sure that your aspect ratio is set to the same setting as your camera. Check the Tools > Options > Advanced tab. If your camera is widescreen, set Movie Maker to widescreen too.
@heeythere112 MSWMM files are project files. When you save the video "as a movie" (Win XP) or "publish" (Vista), the video is converted into a new file as a WMV. Both files will still exist, try looking in your Videos folder for the results.
@fishfoodme Watch my video on doing Split Screen with Movie Maker. The same technique works with picture-in-picture and you can get it from the same website. It only works on older versions of WMM though... sorry. Also, syncing the sound will be have to be done with an external program like Audacity. Using a different video editor, like Pinnacle Studio, would be far easier than using WMM for such a project.
@TheVcgfdfgd That's a good suggestion, but I still use the XP Movie Maker with no issues. I'm getting very close to getting a Windows 7 computer, but I don't like the Live Movie Maker. I'd probably end up getting the version 2.6 anyways or abandoning Movie Maker all together and just using a new Pinnacle program.
@zoemg1 All Windows computers from XP to Windows 7 can get Movie Maker for free from the Microsoft website. Mac computers have an similar program called iMovie.
@zoemg1 All Windows computers with Windows XP (sp 2 and higher) and Vista come with Movie Maker. Try opening the RUN command and type "moviemk" then click OK. If there is no program, then you can download it from the Microsoft website. If you have Windows 7, download it from Microsoft... it's free!
Otherwise, you can but a program like Pinnacle Studio and use that.
@krinz86 By now you probably already know the answers to your questions. YouTube converts all uploaded videos into FLV format and checks for copyright infringements during the processing phase.
@DJlVloonwalker If you saved your project as a movie, you have created an entirely new file. Be sure that you are uploading the new file and NOT the Movie Maker project file (MSWMM).
The new file should be a WMV file also called a Windows Media Audio/Video file.
@Denb7 bloody hell mate, thast what i did. I checked the properties of the movie i was uploading and it was WMV. But it still wont let me upload -.- Made a complaint on teh forums anyway.
k so i was making a video using a still digital camera. when i downloaded the clips, they save as a .mov file, which doesn't work for movie maker. I don't want to download a converter so please help!
@wonderwall135 Yeah, those .mov files are a pain that's preventing me from getting a new camera because the camcorder I've been looking at records in the .mov format.
You don't need to download a converter, there is an online converter that works pretty well. Try Media-convert (dot) com (can't use links here).
@skydance166 If you have a Windows XP (sp2 or newer) computer then you can run Movie Maker. Vista & XP have Movie Maker, if you can't find the link, click START then Run and type "Moviemk" then click OK. If you still don't have it or You have Windows 7, you can download Movie Maker from the Microsoft website. If you only want to make a slideshow, you can also try Microsoft Photo Story 3. Both are free downloads. Try FastStone Image Viewer from Filehippo(dot)com too.
@NoFreakShowThursdays In Windows Movie Maker, you can double speed or half speed a video clip by dragging the 'speed up' or 'slow down' video effects and dropping the effect onto the clip.
1st - Make sure that you save the project before you render the movie.
Rendering a video can take a long time. Make sure that you don't have any power saver features on that will put your computer to sleep. Also check your screen saver so it doesn't sign off your account (if you have more than one).
Yea i checked the settings and its not on power saver or anything. Also i dont have more than one account only one.. its my lap top..So i have to click Save Project as ? thanks ima try it again when I make a video and i will let you know what happens.
There is no sample music with Movie Maker, but you can RIP music from most CDs that you might own using Windows Media Player. Drop a CD into the computer and play it with Media Player (NOT iTunes - it won't work). Click the RIP tab at the top of Media Player and select the tracks you want. Click the START RIP (or whatever) button and the music will be copied to your My Music folder. You can then import that music into Movie Maker.
Mine says that "the movie file cannot be published to the specific location. Verify that the publishing location is still availavble, that there is enough free disk space, and then try publishing the movie again." But the file is 13mb and there's 859mb of space available???
Sounds like you are trying to edit and save to your camera memory. Copy the files to your computer hard drive (maybe the My Video folder) then import them into Movie Maker from there. When you save the movie be sure that the save location is on the hard drive and NOT a removable source.
"moviemk" (without the quotes)... if you have Movie Maker installed, it'll pop up on the screen. If it doesn't start, go to the Microsoft website and search for Movie Maker and you can download it.
You can make a shortcut to Movie Maker by right-clicking the desktop, choose NEW, choose 'shortcut on desktop' type 'moviemk' in the box and name it.
Hi, just wondering if you can help me. I've done everything you've mentioned here, and have published my movie as a movie file. But when I go to play it on Windows media player there is a thick green band at the bottom of the screen which squashes all of the screen shots above it. Any way I can get rid of that? Thank you.
This sounds like either a codec problem or a video driver issue. Make sure that you have the latest updated versions of both. For codec updates in Movie Maker, go to the tools menu then options> general tab. Or go to the Microsoft website and search 'codec'.
Denb i have a problem with my movie maker it always freezing every few minutes no matter what i do ..i to convert all videos into wmv as i've heard that might solve the prob but it didn't:S help pls?
1) Save often - it will lessen any headaches resulting from future freezes
2) Always finish making titles by clicking the DONE option before trying to review or tweak the timeline. My experience was the program always froze if I failed to do this.
i need help.i finished making the video and saved it.but when i upload it to youtube it say ''The Video your trying to upload is a invalid file type''.PLEASE HELP!.
All you need to do is click FILE, then "Save Movie File" (with XP) or "Publish" (with Vista) and an entirely new file will be created with the WMV format. When it is finished saving (it takes a while), look in your "My Videos" folder for the movie file.
The Part 2 video clearly explains the process. You need to save your video as a Movie (publish in Vista). This will create an entirely new file that will be saved in your video folder.
I am attempting to upload a video to youtube. It's in AVI format and it's size is 17,699 bytes (which I'm pretty sure is way under what the max is) and it's been taking forever. Any suggestions?
AVI files are uncompressed so that makes them HUGE files compared to their compress counterparts. Your video must be only 3 or 4 seconds long.
It's usually better if you process your videos with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker and render them as a compressed format. I use WMM and create WMV files. They upload with no problems.
Sorry, I didn't reply sooner but YouTube was doing maintence and "Reply" was disabled.
My video explains the entire process. I don't know what else I could add. The process is now only slightly different from when I made the video, but it's basically the same. Unless you mean that you want to download a video from YouTube and put it into Movie Maker
I didn't import from device. I used my usb and saved videos to my computer. Should I change my video's properties? I've tried everything and still dont understand why I cant upload a video to movie maker. Thanks for your response.
I have windows movie maker. Every time I try with camcorder or still cam this is what it says (could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from) I dont have a fire wire connection. What do I do?
Are you trying to capture video from your device? You should not be importing directly from the camera, you need to capture from a camcorder. Images and video from a still camera can be copied from camera to computer, then imported to WMM.
If your camcorder is a hard drive or flash drive type, you can copy files direct to the computer with a USB, then import to WMM.
I use the Windows XP version and I have several add-ons. If your's is on a Vista computer... it'll look different (green), but function the same. There are 2 views at the bottom, storyboard or timeline... I use timeline. Just click the button to switch views.
The major difference is in saving a video. Vista calls it PUBLISH, XP calls it 'Save Movie'
Help! WMV closed out before i saved/finished my video and now it needs to be converted to work on WMV. :( I don't want to convert it! It seems difficult. What do I do?
If you are doing everything right, my best suggestion is try again at another time. With vague reference to "unknown error" there's not much to go on from my end.
Could be a momentary loss of signal or any number of things.
Thanks a bundle! I've been using Windows Movie Maker for a little over a year and I always had to open it o veiw my movie and could never figure out how to upload it. Thank you soo much :)
Splitting in Movie Maker doesn't affect the original video clip. Cropping out a portion doesn't change the original.
If you screw up splitting or cropping a clip, just delete the whole thing and drag the original clip back into the timeline and start over.
Splitting & cropping only changes the way WMM displays video clips. You can split a clip and drag the last part to the beginning and make the end into the beginning. You can make the same clip appear 2 or more times.
Your videos can be up to 1GB in size and 10 minutes long. 40MB isn't big, but when saving as a movie in WMM you can choose different quality (resolutions)results.
i am editing a video and i want to put it on youtube butit is 23 minutes long and i want to make it like 6 minutes long, so i added the speed up effect twice but then my video started lagging and i need a good way to make it faster but not make it lag, please help me
YouTube has a 10 min. limit. You should use WMM to edit out as much unnecessary stuff as possible. Doubling the speed, too many times over is going to really mess up the playback. You'd be better off yo split the video into Part 1 & Part 2. You could include a link from Part 1 to Part 2 using YT annotations to maki it easier for viewers to see the whole thing.
of one of my clips right after a certain word but when i try and trim it always goes too far into the clip. I tried splitting the film liek you said in your tutorial but the button to do that doesn't let me click on it. do i have to add in that option? or is there a way to select a certain time to trim the clip from
1) Play the video to the point where you want to trim it. Press PAUSE button at the exact point to be trimmed. see*
2) Expand the VIEW a whole bunch, using the magnifier(+). Be sure audio track is visible [+] on left. With view expanded, you should see sound waves in the audio track. Manually move timeline marker to the point to be cut.
* Finally, click SPLIT button (or CLIP menu & choose SPLIT or just CTRL+L). Delete the remainder of the clip.
ok I have Windows Vista, I did what you told me too in your video, and i did the publish to your computer and stuff. Does that still save in the VIDEO folder? and when you uplad it does it say like .MWMM or somthing like that after your file name?
When you Publish the movie it should, by default, be saved in your Videos folder unless that folder has been changed to another location. The Published movie may have a different name (if you typed one), but you should be looking for files that are WMV... not MSWMM!
Look in the Videos (or Movies) folder or search your computer for WMV files. It's the Windows Media Audio/Video files that you'll upload.
I have uploaded a video from my camera (AVI format), it is 1.12GB, and 53 mins long, so I wanted to split it up into parts so I could email it to my friend. I split it up, and published the movie (I have Vista) but when I watch it there is a horrible green block on the video, and it is strectched. Is there anything I can do?
- Green block sounds like you may need to update your codecs ~ maybe in WMM or Media Player, check both... look in Tools> Options
- Stretched picture may be due to watching a 4:3 format video on a 9:16 aspect screen or you recorded 4:3 and published in 9:16 ~ check Tool> Options> Advanced on Movie Maker
These are just my best guesses, I can't be sure that it will help.
Thank you! The 4:3 problem I solved right away, but I am a little confused about the Codec's. If I just email it to my friend, will she have the green box if hers are fine?
Video has to be rendered into thousands of separate pictures (30 frames for each second) a ten minute video may take 2 to 2½ times longer (20-30 minutes). This is normal. A lot depends on your computer system too (RAM, etc.).
I take it that the video didn't explain clearly enough. Your video (slideshow) must first be saved as a movie (Published in Vista) to create a WMV file. The WMV can then be uploaded to youtube.
The procedure is still basically the same. Follow the onscreen instructions.
How did you make an autoplay button at the end of your first video? To take me directly to your second video. And some videos I have seen have a autoplay automatically playing the following video without you doing anything do you know how to do this? Within these first two videos you have a lot of neat features and explain quite a bit. I hate hope to see more in the future.
The link that pops up is a feature that YouTube offers called Annotations. You can add an annotation to your videos to create pop-up text or a link to other videos.
but my problem was the last part it said that i have to embed this video in youtube but then when i play my VID it's says it's not proccess pls. help!!
Don't try to import directly from the camera. Download pics and vids from the camera into the a folder on the computer using scanner and camera wizard or EasyShare. Then open Movie Maker and import from the folder.
Ill do what you said then some error thing will come up BUT if i take a picture from the file that im trying to tranzfer videos from it works if. WHY WILL MOVIE MAKER TAKE MY PICTURES AND NOT THE VIDEOS I WANT TO USE TO MAKE A VIDEO?
If you mean Movie Maker the answer is no. If you have a Windows XP or higher computer, you also have Movie Maker. Check the Assessories folder. (Win)DVD Maker is very similar to WMM and functions nearly the same (except it makes DVDs where WMM may not). Personally, I don't like the title creation function of DVD Maker. For YouTube, be sure to save for playback on a computer.

Thanks for the create a movie part. I couldn't figure out how to change it to a .wmv.
24788 2 years ago
All you need to do is click FILE, then "Save Movie File" (with XP) or "Publish" (with Vista) and an entirely new file will be created with the WMV format. When it is finished saving (it takes a while), look in your "My Videos" folder for the movie file.
Denb7 2 years ago
Yea I know now. Didn't really state that. Thanks for the video.
24788 2 years ago
Thanks a ton I look forward to making videos for youtube.
bpanth3r 2 years ago
It keeps saying that the processing failed and tells me to export the video into .WMV format. how do i do this?
weloveMJmore 2 years ago
The Part 2 video clearly explains the process. You need to save your video as a Movie (publish in Vista). This will create an entirely new file that will be saved in your video folder.
Denb7 2 years ago
Thank you sooo much. you answered allll of my questions!
killerdudelol 2 years ago
hey would you have any idea why on windows movie maker my audio (music file) which is 3 minutes long cuts out at like 1 minute?
LizMarieGalvan 2 years ago
BTW it says "Uploaded (processing please wait)" currenly
NineYearOldToddlers 2 years ago
Sounds like it was successful... so now just wait. It may take a few minutes or an hour or so.
Denb7 2 years ago
I'll try changing the format
Thanks again!

I am attempting to upload a video to youtube. It's in AVI format and it's size is 17,699 bytes (which I'm pretty sure is way under what the max is) and it's been taking forever. Any suggestions?
THANKS!! =D
NineYearOldToddlers 2 years ago
AVI files are uncompressed so that makes them HUGE files compared to their compress counterparts. Your video must be only 3 or 4 seconds long.
It's usually better if you process your videos with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker and render them as a compressed format. I use WMM and create WMV files. They upload with no problems.

How do you upload a video on youtube from windows movie maker
MJ630MJ 2 years ago
Sorry, I didn't reply sooner but YouTube was doing maintence and "Reply" was disabled.
My video explains the entire process. I don't know what else I could add. The process is now only slightly different from when I made the video, but it's basically the same. Unless you mean that you want to download a video from YouTube and put it into Movie Maker
Denb7 2 years ago
I didn't import from device. I used my usb and saved videos to my computer. Should I change my video's properties? I've tried everything and still dont understand why I cant upload a video to movie maker. Thanks for your response.
DrEaMeReScApE 2 years ago
I have windows movie maker. Every time I try with camcorder or still cam this is what it says (could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from) I dont have a fire wire connection. What do I do?
DrEaMeReScApE 2 years ago
Are you trying to capture video from your device? You should not be importing directly from the camera, you need to capture from a camcorder. Images and video from a still camera can be copied from camera to computer, then imported to WMM.
If your camcorder is a hard drive or flash drive type, you can copy files direct to the computer with a USB, then import to WMM.
Denb7 2 years ago
Wow thanks ...I'm going to try this later on today!
Fkinnon 2 years ago
I use the Windows XP version and I have several add-ons. If your's is on a Vista computer... it'll look different (green), but function the same. There are 2 views at the bottom, storyboard or timeline... I use timeline. Just click the button to switch views.
The major difference is in saving a video. Vista calls it PUBLISH, XP calls it 'Save Movie'

Help! WMV closed out before i saved/finished my video and now it needs to be converted to work on WMV. :( I don't want to convert it! It seems difficult. What do I do?

'Upload Failed: An unknown error occurred.'
ForerunnerLuke 2 years ago
If you are doing everything right, my best suggestion is try again at another time. With vague reference to "unknown error" there's not much to go on from my end.
Could be a momentary loss of signal or any number of things.

happened to me also. try to close the movie maker window. and then try again,

when u split the film does it delete the quiet part or just make it go faster?
finba4today 3 years ago
Splitting in Movie Maker doesn't affect the original video clip. Cropping out a portion doesn't change the original.
If you screw up splitting or cropping a clip, just delete the whole thing and drag the original clip back into the timeline and start over.
Splitting & cropping only changes the way WMM displays video clips. You can split a clip and drag the last part to the beginning and make the end into the beginning. You can make the same clip appear 2 or more times.

Thank you so much! I was asking on yahoo and you told me to come here. I missed the step "publish". xD Thanks again!!

So, is there a way to compress the video? My video is about 40MB, and I bet that's pretty huge for YouTube.
Skullbuggy 3 years ago
Your videos can be up to 1GB in size and 10 minutes long. 40MB isn't big, but when saving as a movie in WMM you can choose different quality (resolutions)results.

i am editing a video and i want to put it on youtube butit is 23 minutes long and i want to make it like 6 minutes long, so i added the speed up effect twice but then my video started lagging and i need a good way to make it faster but not make it lag, please help me
koolaid493 3 years ago
YouTube has a 10 min. limit. You should use WMM to edit out as much unnecessary stuff as possible. Doubling the speed, too many times over is going to really mess up the playback. You'd be better off yo split the video into Part 1 & Part 2. You could include a link from Part 1 to Part 2 using YT annotations to maki it easier for viewers to see the whole thing.

i want to trim a selected area off the end
of one of my clips right after a certain word but when i try and trim it always goes too far into the clip. I tried splitting the film liek you said in your tutorial but the button to do that doesn't let me click on it. do i have to add in that option? or is there a way to select a certain time to trim the clip from
ToNstAAr 3 years ago
Things to try (in TIMELINE):
1) Play the video to the point where you want to trim it. Press PAUSE button at the exact point to be trimmed. see*
2) Expand the VIEW a whole bunch, using the magnifier(+). Be sure audio track is visible [+] on left. With view expanded, you should see sound waves in the audio track. Manually move timeline marker to the point to be cut.
* Finally, click SPLIT button (or CLIP menu & choose SPLIT or just CTRL+L). Delete the remainder of the clip.

Why is it when I upload it it says Failed (unable to convert video file) ?
AnnaStarosta 3 years ago
You are sending the Movie Maker project file, not the finished movie. Look for the WMV files.
Denb7 3 years ago
ok I have Windows Vista, I did what you told me too in your video, and i did the publish to your computer and stuff. Does that still save in the VIDEO folder? and when you uplad it does it say like .MWMM or somthing like that after your file name?
AnnaStarosta 3 years ago
When you Publish the movie it should, by default, be saved in your Videos folder unless that folder has been changed to another location. The Published movie may have a different name (if you typed one), but you should be looking for files that are WMV... not MSWMM!
Look in the Videos (or Movies) folder or search your computer for WMV files. It's the Windows Media Audio/Video files that you'll upload.

Please help me!
EmpireClover 3 years ago
Sounds like you may have 2 problems:
- Green block sounds like you may need to update your codecs ~ maybe in WMM or Media Player, check both... look in Tools> Options
- Stretched picture may be due to watching a 4:3 format video on a 9:16 aspect screen or you recorded 4:3 and published in 9:16 ~ check Tool> Options> Advanced on Movie Maker
These are just my best guesses, I can't be sure that it will help.
Good Luck!
Denb7 3 years ago
Thank you! The 4:3 problem I solved right away, but I am a little confused about the Codec's. If I just email it to my friend, will she have the green box if hers are fine?
EmpireClover 3 years ago
Sorry, I don't know how the file will behave on her computer. If it doesn't work right, you may have to save it as a movie over again.
Denb7 3 years ago
I have uploaded a video from my camra and put it on movie maker, it take forever! when i try to save it! PLEASE REPLY!!!!!!
SUPERchik3n 3 years ago
Video has to be rendered into thousands of separate pictures (30 frames for each second) a ten minute video may take 2 to 2½ times longer (20-30 minutes). This is normal. A lot depends on your computer system too (RAM, etc.).
Be patient.
Denb7 3 years ago
i have movie maker and i made a video juste with pictures how to put it in youtube
fcbarcelone3 3 years ago
I take it that the video didn't explain clearly enough. Your video (slideshow) must first be saved as a movie (Published in Vista) to create a WMV file. The WMV can then be uploaded to youtube.
The procedure is still basically the same. Follow the onscreen instructions.

How did you make an autoplay button at the end of your first video? To take me directly to your second video. And some videos I have seen have a autoplay automatically playing the following video without you doing anything do you know how to do this? Within these first two videos you have a lot of neat features and explain quite a bit. I hate hope to see more in the future.
chip2567 3 years ago
The link that pops up is a feature that YouTube offers called Annotations. You can add an annotation to your videos to create pop-up text or a link to other videos.
Check out annotations in YouTube.

Don't try to import directly from the camera. Download pics and vids from the camera into the a folder on the computer using scanner and camera wizard or EasyShare. Then open Movie Maker and import from the folder.

is a video maker the same as a DVD maker? cause thats what i have
danika895 3 years ago
If you mean Movie Maker the answer is no. If you have a Windows XP or higher computer, you also have Movie Maker. Check the Assessories folder. (Win)DVD Maker is very similar to WMM and functions nearly the same (except it makes DVDs where WMM may not). Personally, I don't like the title creation function of DVD Maker. For YouTube, be sure to save for playback on a computer.
