I personally don't care for Cats at all! Lea has done the best Fantine I have ever seen. I saw her at Broadhurst Theatre with Drew Sarich as Jean Valjean and Adam Jacobs as Marius. As far as I am concerned, she does not need to prove anything to me.
@aaprato: Her transformation in this role, from the time she just got offered the part without knowing much about the music and the role (this event) to being hailed by critics as being "the best Grizabella we've seen in awhile, with a wonderfully fresh approach to the role and with exquisite vocals to match..." once she started performing on stage, is a testament to her talent and hard work. Bravo, Ms. Salonga!
It's nice to see her progression in performing this number --> from the time she had just been assigned the role (this video, after just a few practices with the musical director, and according to Lea, when she didn't have much confidence in doing it yet) to actually playing Grizabella on stage and OWNING it (check out the video clip one member of the audience took at the CCP)!
Her voice has such natural melody. It makes it so much more emotive...literally the end of this is spine chilling, I can almost beleive that she's upset herself.
her performance during the play is better than this version.. she really did a very good rendition of memory.. hearing it live at the ccp theater was amazing!
Perfection, Lea Salonga's Singing Standards...Right Emotion and Vocal Rendetion...Perfection in the truest sense...Did she sing Memory with complete Lyrics as she sang in this video?
A VERY beautiful voice, too bad she lacks the emotion that Elaine Paige has in the song, otherwise I'd say it was better. Without the emotions in the voice that give me the shivers, I say she is AS good as Elaine Paige in a professional way.
For Chrissakes, this was a press launch last year, Lea hasn't even rehearsed the real thing yet. This was more like a concert version, almost impromptu (in the sense that it's not the authentic arrangement), not an actual clip from the musical. Yes it's not her best performance, but we shouldn't judge her yet as a lousy Grizabella. She has sung tougher songs and I'm pretty sure she'd sing this gloriously.
i think the reason why it wasn't that very very good(but very original in my opinion) was that she gave twists in the song in order to make it hers and not somebody else's. if you'll just compare it with barbara's or elaine page's version it would make no point for each artist has her own distinction and style. since lea wasn't the first to be grizabella, she changed other things as to make it her own(that means it shouldn't be compared to anyone else's own singing/music)
i beg to disagree with you that lea's version isnt good, in fact it is the best vocal so far ive heard. If she makes it unoriginal and just copied other artists' interpretation of the same song, it wouldnt be her song. What's good about Lea, she makes it to a point that even thousand interpretations of a certain song had been made, she makes it sure and actually does differ her own style and interpretation.
@joseph252007 i think we have a misunderstanding here. i've been a fan of lea as of my yesteryears and also for my everyday. i just thought that it wasn't that very very perfect, but i never said that it wasn't good. i just said, "it wasnt that VERY VERY GOOD", but it is infact good enough to move any audience so, i completely understand if you have been offended(as i am when others say lea is not good)... i just want to make clear that i am also a fan and no way will i say that she isn't good!!
cant really fathom what do u actually mean by very very good, you could have just said the delivery was ok or good but it isnt perfect. But as youve coined ur assessment on lea's performance as NOT BEEN VERY VERY GOOD BUT IN FACT GOOD is really quite confusing.
....Thus, she owns every song she sings coz no one can ever even equal to the quality of a Lea's voice. Come and watch her actually perform on stage as Grizabella and judge her and not just a mini concert but Lea nailed it as she usually does in every performance.
I think Lea has a great voice, but I don't think this is the role for her. She sounds far too young (that's why she features in Disney songs) and seems to struggle with this song. Sorry, usually love her performances, but I find this a rare weak performance from her.
i think barbara streisand is not the original singer of the song, she just popularized it.. just like many other singers do.. question: is this an andrew lloyd webber composition? i think it is..
@ 2.05 Grizabella drops to the ground and is dying,@ 2.15 jemima then sings reminds her that life is still worth living, @ 2.35 she rises to her feet and cries 'touch me' , i have seen many grizabells good and not so good, i can tell you this is a great vocal of memory . Lea will be amazing!
"touch me, it's so easy to leave me all alone with the memory of my days in the sun." OMG she can sing one of the hardest songs of Barbra Streisand. very impressive!
@wewewooo barbara has her version but it was Elaine Page who originally sang this song...Barbara Streissand also DID NOT play JEMIMA in the original CATS Musical.

AMAZING voice as usual.
It just sounds like she struggles a bit with the loud belting near the end.

This barely rehearsed number (she just got the role) was amazing, but the CCP performance was BRILLIANT!

@Blahling Agreed. Lea sings with more musicality than most, but at the cost of emotion.
