Any society that is built upon an ideology is bound to fail. That is actually the root cause of america's current lack of confidence. When people value being right over having actual material goals of course we're bound to fail.

@catbuffalo That is a weird definition of ideology you employ. Materialism is an ideology itself, or at the very least an aspect of an ideology.

@kobewuyts the problem isn't ideology, the problem is people. Both those from each side of the politcal spectrum that are ideologically honest seek the same thing - liberty. Capitalism and socialsim are tools both of which can provide liberty or oppression. Until humanity can evolve beyond the desire for absolute power it doesn't matter what ideology is in place we will end up with the same results.

Materialism as anti-ideology isn't a weird definition at all. Before Althusser and Foucault it even was pretty much the only one. However, conflating "material goals" with "materialism" IS a weird ideological symptom.

@catbuffalo do you realize that any sensical statement is ideological in nature? (even morality is an idea - logos in essence) You inherited treating word "ideology" in a negative connotation - you should read at least genealogy of this word and immerse yourself a bit in reflexivity of it. @catbuffalo It is amazingly ironic that you would misunderstand the term coined by Marx: Ideology. In fact, Ideology is most effective and powerful when it is not realized. That is to say, in thinking that your liberal capitalist society is NOT ideological, is for its ideology to be working amazingly well on you. You believe so greatly in your ideology, that you do not even realize it is an ideology. As Marx said, "They do now know it, but they are doing it." Hilarious.
