Thank you for posting this video. I can't explain how much i love it and what it means to me. I have searched the web for this video for so long. Thank you!
I much prefer the coltrane version. It has so much more inflection and the mood of this take just doesnt fit with the tender melody. Still better than 100% of stuff played on the radio today
WOOhhh! I really am amazed by the way he plays, it makes my body swing like it makes it shiver cold smooth jazz! It's good to hear this song even your alone in the cold.
I would have liked to see Sonny play this beautiful tune twenty years earlier :) Rhythm section went all '80s and electronic. Lost the classic upright tone for a while. But Sonny sounds great!
@KillswitchEngage42 he was moving ahead i guess i forget the majority of jazz ppl are stuck in the past, i really love this sound with electric bass. too bad you jazz guys are so lost in tradition that you don't move forward, keep the music as a museum piece.
@6erAnimeBassist Right... Well, maintaining tradition while incorporating original and new ideas into your music is where it's at. I forgot that Sonny Rollins never played jazz or anything, asshole.
I saw him in Montreal, too, this year, and thought he was amazing despite his age! His body may be slowing down, but his talent is still monumental and his ability to move still very much present. So lucky to have seen him this year. And glad I found the video of this performance.
I just saw Sonny this past Sunday June 27 2010 in Montreal at Jazz Fest. He played this hauntingly beautiful melody, not quite with the same gusto as this performance (consider I saw him 28 years after this, at almost 80 years of age), but still with a stunning mastery of his instrument. I was moved, knowing I was watching one of the greatest musicians ever to grace this earth
This video is amazing. That cadenza....oh my god...a true legend. Sonny, There will never be another you!!!!
@Ianmc26 " ever to grace this earth", will print this in my heart. Saw Rollins three times and the last one close to the time your heard him, and in spite of age and a abnd I did not care much for, eh played beautifully and was moving with his emotions. God bless him for many more years
Sonny is back all the time and it's always a wonderful surprise!

He moves a lot and the sound is still more than awesome.
I don't know how he gets a sound as pure, at same time hard and soft as this.
One word: Awesome...
