Superiority though depends on the weight you place on each area of vocal expertise. If you value range the most then the singer with the widest vocal range is the best in the world. If you value volume then the loudest wins. If you judge based on sales then Mariah maybe wins although I've heard that european singers like Nana Moushouri have sales over 300 million.

Besides reaching it you have to be able to adjust its volume as you wish. You must be able to control your vibrato on that note, slowing it or making it faster as need be. Then other things like can you add distortion to it? Can you growl in it? Can you sing it in every mode it can be sung? All these things count for each note! The balance between all.

@douwd20 I don't understand how you can say Mariah "will never be thought of as a great singer". There are loads of people, including myself, who will readily disagree with that. You can talk about Whitney's skills as a singer without putting down Mariah, who is undoubtedly a great singer.

@RanjitMorey: I wouldn't say that. There are some good Mariah covers and A LOT of great Whitney covers, and by this I mean that Whitney and Mariah's versions were great. And there are two singers who can sing as well as Celine Dion: Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Its obvious her voice is long gone amidst all the drugs. In my opinion Whitney's voice IN HER PRIME was better than Mariah's. that's all im saying. @sameshitdifday you talk about how Mariah is so well rounded as a person (singing, songwriting, producing, etc. ) but conveniently leave out the fact Whitney has 2 Emmy Awards for her role in The Bodyguard, not to mention Kevin Costner chose her as her co-star because she had the best voice of all the candidates.

@WestwoodWarrior8 Listen, I am foremost Whitney's fan and the secondarily Mariah's. I have all albums and they are great and all. Superiority though depends on the weight you place on each area of vocal expertise. If you value range the most then the singer with the widest vocal range is the best in the world. If you value volume then the loudest wins. If you judge based on sales then Mariah maybe wins although I've heard that european singers like Nana Moushouri have sales over 300 million.

@WestwoodWarrior8 You could argue that Mariah's breathy tones are superior to Whitney's ok sure. I could argue that Whitney's overdrive is superior to Mariah's. Ok, depends on what each person values most. If you count grammies (basically the oscars of the music industry) then Aretha has by herself more than Mariah, Whitney and Celine have all together. In general on vocals everything counts, range, volume, control, steadiness, mastery of vocal modes, registers, effects like distortion etc...

@WestwoodWarrior8 Hitting a note does not actually count as having it in your range tbh. To count it it must really be yours to do as you please. Besides reaching it you have to be able to adjust its volume as you wish. You must be able to control your vibrato on that note, slowing it or making it faster as need be. Then other things like can you add distortion to it? Can you growl in it? Can you sing it in every mode it can be sung? All these things count for each note! The balance between all.

@sameshitdifday ...voices and they are very rare (not to many spintos) but the cost is lowering the range after some years. anyway spintos voices are the most powerful out there and I myself think it's worth to have it 15 years than having a weak voice for 30 years but it doesn't mean they totally lose their voice, it simply lower your vocal range. but among all the spintos that's been out there Whitney is the only one I know that could shut a crowd without sounding tight and at the same time...

Most ppl say Whitney destroyed her voice with drugs ect. but what they don't know is that her voice actually was meant to go deeper after years cuz she was a lyric spinto soprano (such as Christina aguilera, but Whitney had a much better emision) and spintos voices become deeper due to the technique itself (I won't explain it now).
