  • Know what you mean. My nephew and his step son went with me and my son on a over night hike in the woods of Alabama. It got down to 31f, they brought some summer bags. Needless to say they stayed up all night feeding a fire. LOL

  • When lived in Idaho everybody ran outside to see the rare event of rain.

  • Great video.......I'm getting ready to do one that is similar here in Virginia.....one thing though, with mine I plan to use a combination of terrain, natural cover and military camouflage to conceal my bug-out position; I just think it's best to make sure that no unwanted attention comes up while you're sleeping, cooking, etc.

  • What part of southern Idaho are you at? Send me a message.

  • good idea to place your backpack theire !

  • Pussies!!!

Where is it freezy and snowy?

    And don't forget your waste!!!

  • @AdDiCtEdToWiNd you did see the snow didnt you...i mean it was 4 ft deep in this film. It wasnt "freezing" by most. only into the low 20's at night.

Waste? yeah us "pussies" just leave trash everywhere. Sorry i backpack a lot...pack it in..pack it out....always have and always will.

  • @delta69alpha

    Hey :-)

Pardon me for calling you pussies.

    Didn't want to offend you.

    Another question...

Did you ever think of a rain-drainage?

The lower end of your tarp is facing to the windward side, where probably the rain's gonna come from.

The rain will run down the tarp, drop down to the bottom splashing, and a puddle near your feet occurs.

Do you use Fahrenheit for specifying the temperature?

  • @AdDiCtEdToWiNd If rain was to be an issue i would have set it up different. No need to pardon you, you knew what you were doing when you slung the insult.

  • nice and simple! love the vids man im subbing

  • For food just scavenge for wild potatoes.

  • Nice!!! I feel like camping too this summer.. :)) thanks for the video!

  • Thanks Bob! Great video!

  • I lived in ID for a couple of years and used to go camping near Gilmore.

  • So yeah, Idaho, well i guess ive been living in Idaho for about 9 years, Hmm any tips, on idaho camping? Pm me if you don't want to ruin it for newbies of Idaho

  • Still lost on the whole SE Idaho thing?

  • @tuxinduluth A joke from the first 2 movies we made 3 years back or more. We figured after that the plam tree,s and plamettoes would be a dead give away that it was a joke. Thousands of people seemed to be lost on it ,the 1st year. So we pretty much kinda dropped it. However..it still lives on.....so here we are in snowy idaho...when its really 85..and 90% humdity.......

  • i prefer a tent with a floor.walls to keep the bugs out

  • @vivitar45 Each his own when it comes to camping. When i hike i dont want to carry a 3-6lb tent when a sub 1 lb tarp will do. Others will, i wont.

  • @vivitar45 i hate to get red ants or ear wigs in your bag clothes or full or bites 2 days later you my regret it if you get itchy bites

  • If there are "all kinds of critters" trying to get into your backpacks how do you keep them off you without some netting?

  • @megodzillaudeadable my summer time set up uses bug netting.

  • Wait, isn't that U.S. Army bivy waterproof? Would you need the tarp if the other sleeping bag wasn't there? I only ask because I'm thinking of getting one. Your opinion on them, please?

  • @HammockerSam the one in the movie is not a usgi goretex bivy. It is a dwr backed nylon one. I dont trust it 100% .

  • @delta69alpha I see. Thanks

  • I don't mean to be hateful (or 'trollish), but you keep saying "cold, snowy southern Idaho" and how cold it is, but I see palmetto bushes and pines, like the ones I used to see in Georgia or maybe Texas. Also, your friend is walking up with a short sleeved shirt, looking like it's in the 80's or 90's...?

I thought it was just me, but in your other video (dutch oven cooking), you say "cold, snowy Idaho" again. Is this an inside joke or something? I ask because of the tarp configuration.

    Thanks.

  • @RonRay Started as a harmless joke. But many didnt notice what you did.Reason why in some of the films we pan around to get the point across that it is a joke. "Look snow,, and a palm tree here in the SOUTH EAST of idaho..". but even that was lost on many.

It was 50f when this was filmed iirc and low was 20-21f that night.

Since we had a reflector set up and cold weather bags,we didnt see the need for a different tarp lay out. Didnt see your reply as trollish .thanks for the view d69

  • @RonRay In this region, 50 is "warm", and 80 or 90 most folks don't do anything, we just hide in a hole and wait for cooler weather.

  • Would you make an 8'x8' for someone? How much? Thanks

  • @streetmartialscience when i was making these tarps i normally would only charge 40$ w/free shipping and discounted prices to APO's. You may want to contact Larry @ armchairtactical-dot-com . Along with me ,he has been making subduded/camo backpacking tarps since around 06' and is someone to be trusted to make a custom tarp.

  • what size is that

and is the like equinox or a cheap

    walmart brand tarp?

  • @nroc13 8x8 silnylon. I make them. So yes it is "cheap" in that sense. This tarp is going on 3 years old and about 20 trips, not one issue yet.

  • just cuz its south doesn't get cold just wait till mid to late winter when ya get to the negs

  • Hit my channel for some real urban survival!

  • A scorpion or a rattlesnake in a sleeping bag would't be nice. Down round here we roll up our sleeping bags during the day, otherwise something nasty could crawl in.

  • @Cytacon as you can see in the movie my bivy top is folded over aka "closed". Even in winter time i do that. Not only to keep bugs out, but snad, rain etc. While there are many venomous snakes down here. I have yet to have any issue with them while camping, but then again i was brought up to check before i stick my hands/body/feet into things such as bags, boots, jackets so as to not get stung/bit.

  • People who dont bring sleeping gear are STUPID!

I live in the Mojave desert and even during the summer nights it gets down to 75 or so, from 100+ during the day, and trust me, you need gear, hypothermia can and will hit you at any temperature at night

  • HEY MAN,why dont u set up some sawed off branches over the parts that breath,im not being critical, just saying

  • Hey very practical and good advice and practical. Atleast your not touting your survival skills, as our Limy friends put it, it is CAMPING. I to grew up in S. Idaho and have lived in the high desert most my life. Thanks for the Fideo

  • Quick Question- Why Not a Tent? maybe its a dumb question. You obviously know a lot more about camping than i do!

  • @SuperGrizzly1984 weight. Most backpacking tents start in at around 3 lbs. The tarp shown in the film, with tight outs and pegs runs around 15-16 oz irrc.

  • @SuperGrizzly1984 I wouldn't use a tent for several reasons (other than weight). Mainly because all tents I have seen, while raining, usually leak somewhere (like on the bottom, where you sleep). The next reason is because of insects/animals (obviously). Also, on the ground you have to clear the area of debris or sticks, rocks, ect so that you can be comfortable. Time is usually a large factor, and going off all that - it's faster to setup a hammock/tarp.

  • i have a tarp from walmart is

a walmart brand 8x10 tarp a good choice

for a tarp or is a 4x6 poncho better?

  • @nroc13 You would probably end up replacing them quite often either way. It is very hard to keep anything from Wal-mart very long, haha.

  • Picking your spot is very important. In case of a downpour, you don't want to find a stream forming under your hooch.

  • alright bear grylls does not say "crikey" but you did get the "glacear" right haha.

  • you comment on making theese tarps, do you sell them?

  • nice vid bob. i'll bet you spent the night turning back and forth to keep both sides warm. did the log help direct the heat. ive thought about that before in cold weather camping using some large rocks.

  • no tossing and turning at all. Yes it did reflect enough heat to make a difference compared to temperatures outside of the shelter.

  • Hi

I am from NYC and moved to Colorado. Can I come out and camp one weekend with you guys .

I would love to learn ..

  • Where at in Idaho?

  • we are not in Idaho. The palmettos must be that widespread,,;p

  • You ever on arfcom?

Remind me a little of Protus with the tarp making thing.

  • protus??? aint he from florida? Im from idaho ;) cant you tell by all the snow and ice?

  • Heh didn't really pay attention to where he was posting from.

Thanks for all the vids you guys post they're really helping me out.

Guess I'll see you around around survival discussions, I've been spending WAY to much damn time in GD.

  • get both ;)

  • Hey Delta69alpha... Love the vids. You keep mentioning how you make your own tarps for shelter. Do you have any instructions on how to make those? I want to put one into my Go Bag. Thanks!

  • did ya scrarp the sticks

  • Ill try that again did u scrape the sticks and stone away from where u slept or did u not need to in this sort of situation?

  • Yes we did clear away any large sticks etc from under us.

  • I am interested in the weight savings gained from a tarp but I have one question that I don't ever see addressed.. Do you get bothered by bugs in shelters like this? I know that if I as much leave my tent open for an hour that it fills with ants and all sort of other fun things that can make it difficult to sleep when they crawl all over you. =P

  • We will have a movie up shortly that shows some "bug out bag" gear weighed and compared. The tarp showed in this movie weighs about 7 oz. A solo bivy tent will weigh close to 3 pounds!!

When used solo in summer i use a bug net to keep flying bugs off me.

  • i dont recomend sleeping on the ground cuz its cold! i higly recomend a hammock its easy to setup and realy fast

  • cool vid. my kind of hiking.

  • Why anyone would think southern idaho is warm enough not to need a sleeping bag in fall or winter is beyond me. lol

  • It was joke on all of those on the web that preach you dont need a sleeping bag in the south...WAY south of Idaho ;p So far i have yet to see anyone down here brave our winters with out a proper sleep system!

    Bob

  • Yeah I live in the REAL South, Louisiana. We dont need no steenkin sleeping bags. Nylon Tarps are great but a blue tarp from Wal-Mart will suffice.

  • Your farther north than where we camped in this movie that's for sure ;) . Blue china mart tarps can work as well, but again bulk, weight etc all come into play when backpacking.

  • Great information! Please try not to move the camera so much - I need a dramamine now but it was worth it.

  • Sorry, wasn't room in my pack for a tripod and Jimmy is camera shy so i had to keep him outta view for the most part. ;p

  • Your channel is great - I'm always on the lookout for more videos from you guys - you're on my top tier with nutnfancy and Canterbury at WildernessOutfitters. Keep it up!

  • How about doing a video where you show us all those different tent configurations you mention...???

  • Thanks for the info. Great as always!!!

  • Were those palmettos I saw!?

  • yeah tons of em' here in southern idaho ;)

  • Reminds me of my days in the Army. Except everything smelled of mosquito repellent. :)

  • Good info in this video. I'm hoping to try tarp camping when the weather gets a little bit nicer.

  • Good info - thanks for the video.

  • Unless its 65 degrees you always need something. Even if its a blanket to wrap yourself in.

Im in the Midwest and I went camping in Flagstaff AZ. once and I thought hey its AZ. I dont need any warm close. Well let me tell you something, maybe not during the day in the summer but I froze my ass off at night.

  • hows that sportsmens guide bivy working for you? im lookin to get one because at less than 40$ its a good deal, but only if it works well.

  • its alright. doesn't breath to good and is a tad narrow in the hips . But for what i spent on it ( pack,UL bag and bivy and bladder 65$ ) ill keep it. Ive only used it about 3-4 times in the 3+ years Ive had it. Not the best but it works to protect the bags from h20.

  • ok, i guess ill just stick with my old rain fly, you get the same condensation but dont have to pay for a whole new bivy

  • Maybe some night time updates when you have the fire going, etc. I am interested to see if the tarp + Bags will give you enough heat to sleep comfortably?

  • We were fine and it got to about 22-25f that night. the bivy bag and the trap at the ground side was frosted over. I had a basic micro thermometer and it was a 15 f difference at our "heads" vs 10 yards off to the side of the camp.

  • Bob,

Thanks for sharing your tarp set-up.

Would you mind applying your experience to this question:

I currently have an improvised sleeping bag made from military surplus rain poncho and liner. How effective will that be for keeping warm (temperature rating?).

Thanks, keep up the good work.

  • from what i have done in the past depending on what your base layers are . Maybe 50-55ff for comfort, mid 40's any lower you'll want a fire of sorts. Lowest Ive done with a poncho and liner set up was 58-50f and i got cold near dawn.

  • If I have thermal unders, BDU, Fleece outer, hat, and thick socks as my PJ's, do you think that it would suffice for a three season rig?

What do I need to add for winter? I'd like to do some testing, but need a place to start.

    Thanks for your help.

  • first:D

but good set up of camp

  • lol uber tactical..
