The purpose is to hone you're photography abilities. The pinhole forces you to put a lot more thought into composition. Every photo student starts with, or at least learns about, pinhole cameras.

A regular sensor, totally exposed, has literally no optical properties. But if you mean with the pinhole attachment, the focal length is how ever far away the pinhole is from the sensor (in millimetres). So technically, if you attached a paper towel tube and made the pinhole at the end of that, you would have made a telephoto lens. Pretty cool stuff...

My Nikon D5000 appears to need a lens attached in order to take a photograph. The cameras has a sensor which allows it to be turned on, only when it connects with the metal plates built-in to the lens. How does his work?

@BadBadRobot The camera locks the shutter when you use it without a lens attached. just use Manual Mode and it should work :D

Best way to do this is to warm a needle above a lighter and melt a hole. Quite precise and fun and EASY to do.
