I have been absolutely haunted by this one; Loreena said that it represents earth's yearning for release from human oppression.

And indeed, her vocals sound not just like the despair of the Earth, but like the sobs and wails of the bean-sidhe (banshee); the fairy woman wails through the night to warn a family that death is near for one of their loved ones.

And more than one banshee crying at once warns that death is near for someone of great importance.

This is part of the best memories of the first Christmas I spent with my ex. I never knew the name of this song for eight years, as I had taped it and only had a hunch it was Lorena McKennitt's song. But I found it two days ago and it was wonderful to hear it in its entirety again.

Huh, I got this song from the Celtic Twilight CD. Still a beautiful song, though.

Beautiful! The lack of words adds to it; just the raw emotion in the vocalise. And these magnificent trees truly adds to the mood; ancient pines... a sense of unfulfillable yearning as well as the old-growth trees.

At times, this reminds me of a banshee's wail; mournful, lonely, empty, and filled with longing. And the banshee (bean-sidhe) is of Irish and Scottish origin. It all fits wonderfully. Loreena truly has a gift!
