Nice solos all-around. I disagree on the tempo being too fast...it's just the feel on the feel is wrong at that tempo. It sounds like the original, only sped up, ie. saxes laying back, smoother piano lines, less-aggressive ride cymbal, etc. At this tempo, I really think you need to change the feel to Buddy Rich/Gordon Goodwin hard swing--front part of the beat, heavy ride, punchy rhythm section. "Cool" doesn't really work at this tempo. Maybe the players know the original TOO well?
I prefer in particularly the slow version of Stolen Moments, i thnk you can "feel" it better than in fastmotion, i mean it's more cool jazz. I would have done it slower.
Hey! Why is this band in such a hurry? It's not even polite going at such speed on this beautiful ON tune! They menage to spoil something very cool and translate it into... noise! Sorry to say, but 2 stars is even too much!
( Oh boy, I used to love this song! Now I have call my shrink!) B-D
I'm in a stage band and the music score were using doesn't even sound like this, and my teacher asked the band to look up the song and i have no idea if its the right version or not so I've been on for ... i think 2 hrs :(
This is my original arrangement of the Oliver Nelson tune--it's not a copy of the original arrangement in any way except the melody and the changes are the same. You're better off looking at some of the conventional performances for your stage band.--Willy Dalton
The original Oliver Nelson version was much slower--I was trying for something different with this arrangement--I hear a lot of gospel in those changes and I tried coming at it from that direction--especially in the "shout chorus" at the drum solo.
Whoa, whoa, whoa- where's the fire, bucky? Are they trying to 'shred'? But seriously, once they get rolling it kind of grows on me. I do prefer the more laid-back version...
The time doesn't feel right on this. It's too fast for this melody. Additionally, the drummer is behind the groove rather than on top of it. And the conga player can't be heard unless he's bashing incoherent fills. It doesn't really swing. I'm from the midwest and East coasters really don't know how to swing, they're too busy trying to outplay everyone. This is the vanilla version.
Yeah, the tempo is pushed much to fast. This is such a lyrical piece, that felt lost. Tom Colao should have had more time for his solo. hi tom, walter here!
Hey now......the East Coast is not devoid of swing. Certainly is here though. Definitely agree with you in this case. They aren't lacking talent, but having recently played the song myself (albeit in a much smaller high school band), I can say that the timing is just too fast for the feel of how I think the song should be played. No offense to the musicians, of course.
This Colao guy should get more solos and why doesnt DiLorenzo solo all the time???? He's got some great finger ability and he knows how to get the best sound out of the instrument too, he needs more solos.
I always said "Mike is our secret weapon." With all due respect to the other piano/keyboard players who have worked with us I feel Mike DiLorenzo is an unreplaceable member of the band,

This is such a fun clip to watch and listen to! A great atmosphere, cheer and vigour!
Personally, this fast version is much more in sync with me now;
although some decades ago, I liked the deliberately slow. calculating, spy-movie-like original Oliver Nelson version.
I think, the music, too, evolve with us, and I can imagine even a lot faster version to come!
Thank you for this great clip!!!!

too urgent, lost the integrity, but very talented musicians, and worth a listen compared to what.

my band is doing this...we have 6th 7th and 8th graders so we take it a lot slower, it sounds like a ballad compared to this!!
