  • salute to KC from STL

    NadePaulKuciGravMcKi

  • rotflmfao

  • genxxxersize will go postal on ya for noting any similarity to Kansas

  • @jaminjef I don;t hear any similarity with Kansas at all !

Shooting Star always has been& will be one of my favortie hard rock bands

  • @Freyja1133 There is no similarity with Kansas, you are 100% right.

  • PHENOMENAL TUNE! ;o)

  • i saw them in 82 at harpos in detroit... amazing show

  • I saw this band in the early 80s they were great!!!!!!!!!!

  • uh....I just looked them up cause they were in one of my favorite books....but I am guessing its not a real band in the book hah....

  • I was there!!!

  • They remind me of Kansas, we love Shooting Star since 1980's, we love you here in EL Paso, Texas.

  • This singer's voice sucks big time. Gary West or nothing IMO. I have their '89 live album and he sounds like he's gargling nails.

  • Love Shooting Star! Brings back memories of listening to this music with my older brother!

  • much better than Kansas live...

  • And then there is the violin...

  • It is like Kansas,YES and the Dixie Dregs "ALL" in one!!!

  • Incredible.

  • so awesome!!!! peace2u! eric

  • great song, fantastic video. I have a question for the great one-( no2hate). what happend to that beautiful video with the superior production and the highly expressive photographic montage. It was the first time I commented on anything, this is the second. This has been goonyblue from the lawless land of individual expression.

  • @goonyblue I just reposted it!! It's a video response to this video. thanks! peace2u! eric

  • I will say it again...Kansas never kicked ass on a violin like SS.

  • Great musicianmanship...The drums during the solos are outstanding.

  • That was cool.

  • Sounds a bit like Vince Neil at times as well. Not strange I guess as I know he was a fan. Breakout was playing in the limo in the 'Uncenscored" video from the 80's.

  • this is so awesome! peace2u! eric

  • oh wow! So glad I found these guys, I loved them in the 80's but since them have lost the album. Too bad , the lead singers voice isnt as high now :( but still love songs.

  • Absolutely love this song.

Ang I agree with most everyone else. Sounding like Kansas is definitely a good thing. Kansas had way more popular songs, but their sound is definitely very close in nature.

    Thanks for posting this song.

    peace!

  • This was fun in clubs in KC in the 70s, but in no way does it compare with Kansas.

  • Gran Banda.. saludos desde Puerto Rico.. Les recordamos con mucho cariño...

  • I met these guys in a small dance club called PoGo's in Kansas city Kansas back in the 80's and they were cool as hell .

  • thank you for reminding me of this great song

  • Is this the bands official youtube?...I tried the Myspace and nobody has updated in years.

  • As one of the Brothers 5 in AggieVill, At Brothers Bar, during the 80's.. The boys from Smith Lake Kicked Fuckin Ass! McKian Auditorium!

  • A rock masterpeice with everything in the mix!

Brilliantly executed instrumentally and lyricly--we ALL wish rock was back to this quality

  • man I miss this stuff!

  • Awesome ! Just Awesome ! Hell of a solo .. Love shootingstar & still do.. ....

  • LOVE THE VIOLIN!

  • Epic song. Why can't music today tell a story, AND have a message? I was born in the early 90's and I've been feeling as if I should have been around when bands like Shooting Star, Kansas, Pink Floyd, AC/DC (with Bon), and all the other greats were in their prime. It's a terrible shame that music might never be the same as it once was, like in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

  • @wamtv2010 you damn right friend...

  • I've opened for this version of the band a couple of times in Cincinnati. I agree they didn't quite have the same magic as the original line-up, but they still pulled it off well, and are great dudes.

  • @bcushing These guys are from Kansas City, Missouri. They are friends of mine They rock for sure...

  • I saw them at Adventure Island in Tampa Fl. many years ago. What a show! What a night! Loved these guys. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Pretty Disappointing, saw these guys at Bogarts in Cinci in 1982, this is a poor, pale comparison

  • This is interesting from a nostalgic standpoint, but disappointing because of the fact only 3 of the original 6 members are still in the band. Gary West (lead vocals) and Charles Waltz (violin) were key members of the original band and aren't in this performance. And I'm sorry, but this keyboardist is no Bill Guffey either (notice how he fudges the hard parts that Bill played in the original song?).

The original band's first four albums were GREAT back in the day. Get 'em if you can. :-)

  • Not the best rendition of that song but the original version is probably one of the best rock songs ever...

  • I like these guys. Not a bunch of drugged out hermaphrodites, just talented musicians with kind of a Kansas thing going on. Sweet Comfort band was the same way.

  • great band great song these guys shuld made it alot bigger than they did!!

  • somebody tell me why this wasn't/isn't as big/bigger than don't stop believing by journey??its almost similar plus its got hella solos all through it

  • I love that song so much and take me back to my teens, the best time of my life.

im going to post it on facbook for my friends. thank you for post it in youtube.

  • First heard this on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester on the Chris Tetley show after a track by Fortress called "Hands in the till" Sooooo love this track, it is a real pomp rock classic just like "Battles" by AXE.

  • These guys played at my high school in 1977, under the name "morningstar".

    Raytown High School, in KCMO.

  • Morningstar was completely different band

  • This was the first Shooting Star song I heard, and it's still my favorite. I bet that was an awesome show!

  • i seen them 2 or 3 times in the early 80 they put on a great show. just cant remember if it was 2 or 3 times due to to much drug use in the 80.

  • KANSAS ON STERIODS

  • That's pretty funny!

  • @dalmatian847 yes..that is pretty funny.........and fairly accurate to a degree ;-) good ear ssweeps1

  • @ssweeps1 i love that, they are kansas on steroids

  • Comment removed

  • Last Chance is pretty sweet. Hollywood rules too.

  • Love this tune! deffinatly can feel the Kansas Influence. One of the great Bands that few know of! (Not just sayin that cause I'm a Missouri Boy either)keep Rocking!!!!!!

  • awsome song

  • this got played a lot SF bay area. I remember trying to get tickets to a club gig when their tour came through but it sold out in a few hours.....Distinctive vocals;they don't make great American rock bands like this anymore.....

  • i was there it Rocked looking forward to SEPT 25 at STARlite.

  • Holy CRAP that was awesome!

I hope he was wearing a cup on the way back to the stage; could have been a little uncomfortable being held up by the old nut sack. YIKES!

  • You're never too old to crowd-surf!!!!

And that bass guitar is fucking tight!

  • The violin and the chord progression is definitely going to draw the Kansas comparisons. Same with Sweet Comfort Band.

  • i live in kc and saw them in columbia it was awesome! got to meet Van and Stephen

  • hey where's everyone from i live in Independence, Missouri and have always been told these guys are local and have always been curious what kinda respect they got.

this song made the top 500 classic rock songs countdown thing 101 the fox in kansas city did over memorial day weekend so i find that pretty impressive and i would guess the band is touched by that generosity.

  • im from idaho but i live in vegas now.... my dad had hang on for your life on vinyl and the best of on the cassette...but i've met no one else that knows who they are. amazing shit. they need to come out west.

  • Hey im from shitty cincy BUT i know how to ROCK

LAST CHANCE belongs in the TOP 5,

    PERIOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    not too argueable ,i believe

  • Wow they struck Cincy and Frisco from what I hear. This gives me hope as a KC Kid! :)

  • Love this song every morning before school. Still gets me pumped up.

  • I grew up in Kansas City and saw these guys 3 or 4 times when I was a teenager. Thanks for posting and the memories.

  • First time I heard of shooting tar was when I saw them warming up for Robin Trower. I was blown away amd ran out and bought their album. (Yes, I said ALBUM). Wore a groove in it...

  • Albums were the best.

  • I love this song! The kettle drums in some live recordings are so awesome! I'm only 13 and I like Shooting Star. Sadly, most of my teachers don't even know them.

  • sadly is that your teachers had the chance & it is not their last chance ...Happy listening

  • they sound like Kansas. and thats a good thing.

  • @racesity They are from Kansas City. Kansas is from just north of KC on the other side of the river.

  • @racesity No where near do they sound like Kansas not even close what are you talking about!

  • @ogrebattle22763 I think they sound like KANSAS....it's the violin.

  • @455Transam Yes now that I think about it they do sound a bit like Kansas.... a bit!

  • @ogrebattle22763

Agree. For example, whoever is singing a given song for Kansas actually sounds good.

  • Heard this song on the radio in '79 or '80 and taped it.... Top favorite ever songs.......

  • Oh man....Tears just flowed out my slanted chink eyes when i heard this great tune. Thanks You Tube for bringing back true music!

  • too funny !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont know if ur refering to a good "chink eyed buzz" ?(miss those days)

    or r u asian ?

but ur allrlite in my book either way!

    "U FUNNY GUY" lol

U know Jimmy Page's granma had chineese in her

& no1 here should have anything bad to say

    about ***** Mr Jimmy Page*****

  • hell yeah!!!!!!

  • This video is depressing. I saw these guys open for a Foghat/BOC gig 23+ years ago at the Cap Centre in DC and they blew us all away. Didn't know then or of them and - wow, I wish you guys could have seen them then. Something special...

  • Theo, do a search for this name: glendougcut

Bunch of live stuff from 85 and 86.

  • Who is the guy in the Yellow Shirt? Is that Gary West?

  • love this song!!!!!!!!!!!

  • These guys are great. This is a fabulous song.

It is really a shame they didn't make it real big. I can think of alot of bands who gained more notoriety but are not close to this good. Plus, I happen to know Van and he has always been a real stand-up guy. Not at all pretentious. Let's hope Shooting Star can still make it, if they desire it. The young people now a days would love this band because they are awesome.

  • IM WITH U MAN

    what can we do?

the kids make hip whats authentic & underground or the vaigly known

    SHOOTING STAR qualifies

    HEY guys

"are u on my side "?

yea yeah "ARE U WITH ME" ??

  • killer tune

  • I can remember enjoying their concert played at Rainbow Music Hall ( no longer standing) on Monaco and Evans during the 80's in Denver, Co. I still spin their music whereas my teenage son enjoys also.

  • Never thought I'd see Shooting Star mosh! LOL!! Oh well, at least there was a method to the moshing madness this time! Greatest double-drum solo since "Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Group!

  • Comment removed

  • crowd surf. moshing is brutal. . .

  • I remember trying to record this tune on my tape recorder off of the radio in 1980.... This is perhaps the best rock tune EVER....

  • maybe , maybe not im not sure

  • DUDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    THATS A PRETTY BIG STATEMENT!!!!!!

and i believe your correct ,one of the BEST rock tunes ever.

  • Yes, Gary West was the original singer. I miss him.

  • Thanks for posting this! I loved this band in college. It was pretty cool to be a Shooting Star fan back then; they definitely did not suffer from overexposure.

Love the instrumentals on this, including the killer violin.

Is Van McClain (guitar) the only original member here?

  • To the best of my knowledge, three of these guys are original... Van McClain, Ron Verlin, and key board player. The lead singer and violinist are new

  • Keyboardist isn't new. Bill Guffy was the original keyboardist until his departure. After that, Gary West and Charles Waltz took over for keys.

  • can anyone fill me in on the members and which bands they were with previously?

  • This song kicks it!!!!!

  • Different singer

  • ah, the good old days and the good old music

  • Is the drummer from the POLICE? He looks like him!

  • This is one of my favorite Shooting Star songs. It brings back alot of good memories.

  • Never give up your age to these kids, but it is a great song

  • I didn't know who this band was 25 ago and and a friend took me to see them and it was the greatest concert ever. We went back stage and I talked to the base player and told him he was a great guitar player... he was polite later I learned he was not the guitar player...lol

  • I just saw them last night at the blue note in Columbia, MO. Different singer and violinist and drummer. Video does not do them justice

  • these guys are african

  • you... :O o o o o ( * ) ... me

  • havent heard this song in years very cool

  • your last chance to yell!

  • I just love a relly great rock anthem and this one is one of the greatest ever!!

  • Que buena rola

  • At the end, the guy is like, "Scream into my penis microphone everyone! Yeah!"

    hehe

  • When I was a freshman at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, they put on their own Live-Aid concert (1985) with shooting star headlining.

It was the greatest concert. The best part of this show was when, during this song, the lead singer jumped off stage to go to the kettle drums. They did not have enough room on stage, so they put it on top of a moving truck. He ran up a ladder, did his part, then fireman slid down the ladder, ran back up on stage right on que. Awesome!!!

  • Flick the Bic's!

  • Great song! One of my all-time favorites. Looks like my old friend Rod Lincoln sitting in on drums for them. I saw them in the late 70's at the Missouri Theatre in St. Joseph, MO. One of my first concerts and I fell in love with them. Still have them on my ipod. Thanks for posting them here.

  • When I saw this video here, I think about a 12 year old boy in San Jose CA, lying on his bed on a summer night hearing this song for the first time on 98.5 KOME Radio on his little Panasonic radio and falling in love with a unique band called Shooting Star. That young music lover was sad a few years later to find out that they weren't on the scene anymore. That kid was me. Now I'm 38 and I still love them and think they were and are terribly under appreciated. Thank you :)

  • When I read your comment, it brought me back to my childhood. I too grew up in San Jose and remember listening to 98.5 KOME and 92.3 KSJO during this time.

  • This is the good stuff. We owned this LP. Still do.

  • I can see the 'Kansas' connection, both bands came from the same area, Kansas City, St.Joseph and Lawrence. Awsome group.

  • When this song first came out back in the day, I thought it was Kansas. Same style, with the violin and progressive very long seven minutes plus compilation. An excellent song!

  • One of the best songs ever-- however this performance is a bit flat.

  • GREAT SONG. CRANK IT UP .

  • 2 WORDS "KICK ASS"

  • Thanks for posting this, Shooting Star...this takes me back to the times I lived in Denver and Oklahoma during the 1980's.

I stil laugh remembering one or two of the band members wearing pajamas on-stage!

  • if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's in the same fashion of thin lizzy's emerald and one tin soldier. i miss songs like these. shooting star still kick ass !!

  • THANKS kingemerald1

ur rite WOW ,i checked it out ,now im a big FAN of THIN LIZZY

    love both these bands

    S Star 4 ever!!

  • Thin Lizzy is awesome, the Brits say "Tin Lizzy"

  • love this band

  • Love the band but I think he had a brain freeze when he hit a couple of those high notes. whew, good stuff though

  • AWESOME!!! I was in a couple of bands in the very early 80's that covered "Hang On For Your Life" and "Breakout", but I never got to see them live. Many, many, many thanks for this video.I need to get this DVD.

  • what about hollywood i like to see it....true shooting star fan''''''''''''''

  • Remember, this vidio is after their prime. These guys rocked!!!!

  • all time favorite song CLASSIC!!!!

  • Rotating stage, Wesport Plaza St. Louis,MO. early '80s, Great concert of all time

  • Hey, I was at that show in Westport! I remember it was a standing room only crowd! And remember they did the last (or was it one of the last) KSHE Kite-Fly... Great band!

  • I just remember great seats, drinks delivered and great music.

  • Not only one of the most underrated bands of all time, but this song has to be one of the best rock songs ever!

  • AGREE !!!!

    very well said

you are making 2 VERY BIG & true statements

SHOWS how messed up the world IS

-has to be the most UNDERRATTED /so many hard songs that the world has barely or never heard

-Then to have one of the best songs of all time also

THATS JUST WRONG,THE WORLD IS MISSING OUT, id be pissed if i never heard of these guys

  • Where are the PJs, Gary?

  • Gary West was long gone by the time this incarnation of Shooting Star did this show.

  • Thanks guys for great memories when I hear this song..... I feel 20 again

  • AWESOME Group, LOVE HOLLYWOOD also, but dont see it on here

  • i was looking for this song a while back for some reason something made me think of it,used to have the album, great song.i lived in the kc area when they were at their peak.

  • I saw them in Tulsa in 1983. They opened for Kansas. Kansas was fragmented at the time, and these guys BLEW THEM AWAY. Great band.

  • my dad's fav band

  • The stong words of this song got me through so many bad times......I knew Gary and his sister back then; so sorry to hear about Bill.

  • Love these guys..............

  • Caught these guys back in 81. Lovethe violin ala Kansas.

    Under rated band.

    thanks for the video

  • great song i love it

  • I accually heard this one the radio in Detroit today, great song!

  • It must have been on the wrif I don't know of any other stations that would play a cool jam like this, But I just moved back here after being gone for 10 years so things could have changed!

  • That goes without saying, Doug Podell played it as a request.

  • The doc of rock, 89x is okay but other than that forget about it. wrif rocks our only salvation.

  • Yeah, now that Z-Rock and WLLZ are gone, your right.

  • One of my favorite songs to play on the drums. I posted me playing it, on my site.

What great memories of the 80's!!!

    Frickin' awesome.

  • Great fun. When I dated my husband, he lived across the street from Ron West of Missouri, brother of Gary West of Shooting Star. I have fond memories of playing frisbee in the street with Ron whilst enjoying some of nature's herbal bounty. Kick A memories I'll take with me forever.

  • ive waited 20 years to see them do this song!!!

  • Is there a video for Hollywood?

  • I was looking but didnt see one, thats an awesome tune, I love Hang On for Your Life and Breakout off that album as well!

  • Thank you so much for posting this, I have not heard this in AAAAAges!

  • 1 OF THE GREATEST TUNES E V E R !!

  • One of the greatest studio cuts EVER.

  • Beautiful!

  • They used to play this song in the early eighties on a Detroit rock station they called WABX, I think it was 99.5 on the dial, this song was released around the same time as Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell...

  • Yep! 1980 :)

    By the way, interesting screenname...

  • Anyone have this in the studio LP version?
