The post office isn't in trouble because their obligations to people who HAVE retired, it's in trouble because The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 forced the post office to fully fund the pensions and health benefits of 75 years worth of future theoretical retirees (some of whom are people who haven't even been born yet), within 10 years. This is a practice that no private business could sustain and was only forced upon The USPS because paid of congressmen wanted USPS to fail.

There are federal laws that insure the delivery of mail, the tampering of it and extra protection for mail carriers. However as things currently stand the USPS can not afford its current obligations and something needs to be done about that. Privatization should not be looked at as a cure but one of several possible solutions to a problem that increasingly needs to be addressed.
