I liked the CBS theme better, but I hated all the CBS voice overs. Stay tuned next for, this program was recorded etc. NBC didn't do that with their closings "for the most part"
Well the networks were just trying to keep up with the times by creating a contemporary theme... personally I liked the classical late 70's theme better
@TimothySEnglish I agree with you. I like the late 70s theme much better than all of them. However, this theme is starting to grow on me a little. I still like the 70s one especially. And I personally think the one from 86 was just pathetic. But that's just my opinion. I mean there's no comparison between that one and the 70s one. The 70s one was most beautiful and can really touch a person in the heart.
I couldn't disagree more...I associate the jazz theme with the beginning of SFT's decline. "SFT Close January 28, 1980 - Monday" on You Tube is the quintessential theme.
Santa Barbara was already on the air when SFT was cancelled. I've read that the show was cancelled in 86 while SB came on in 83 or 84. They cancelled SFT due to its ratings. NBC always get rid of these classic shows so that they can fill them with s***. I wish was a child of the 80s so that I could see these classic soaps. Well I caught them in the 90s when they were still some good. Now they are all crap and the characters are so one dimensional. I wish that they would reformat all the soaps.
Not to mention that SB was an hour show, and SFT a half-hour...anyway, SFT was replaced by the short-lived game show Wordplay, while SB was replaced by Scattegories and a revival of the mid-80s game show Scrabble (which were just stopgaps until John & Leeza was ready).
Love the theme, very laid back and smooth, as well as catchy. I love how it incorporates the previous theme at :32-:46 it blends well with the rest of the theme.
The theme needed to be updated for the 80s, to follow the P&G Soap Facelift of 1981-82. This arrangement of the theme does not sound like Kenny G's work, nor is it crapola.. we're talking about two different sounds there. The style of this is more along the lines of Chuck Mangione.
And the moon and the clouds (not to mention that red text) sort of remind me of the night Jesus Christ was born, and how the Wise Men might've been traveling to Bethlehem to that jazz beat.
Ah Yes..I thought of Chuck Mangione too when hearing this music..Although I wasn't a regular viewer of SFT back in 1984, I do recall seeing it from time to time and this jazzy theme didnt bother me in the least. I'm sure Mary Stuart was just thankful that she still had a job at this point.
I know what you mean, considering the fact that Ms. Stuart was nearly ousted by Maeve McGuire the following year. Thank god she stayed on through the bitter end.
You can find a complete episode from 1962 right here on You Tube--the thumbnail image is two old ladies in a Dash detergent commercial. But anyway, that will have the opening & closing title sequences used until about 1973 or '74, except that it will be in black & white. I think "SFT" and CBS programming didn't go color until 1967 or so.
If you want to hear just the theme music, there are soundbytes of all the "SFT" themes on the SoundAmerica website.
I found the mid-70's version that I remember as a child when my mother watched Search for Tomorrow. Guess it's not the original, but it's my favorite. Thanks!
some names i recognized...john aniston who plays victor kiriakis on "days of our lives", matthew ashford who plays jack deveraux on "days of our lives", and alison bartlett, who plays gina on "sesame street"
I loved this show... simple, easy to follow stories and realistic, middle/upper middle class type characters... just dramatic enough but not over the top like today's soaps.
I never watched SFT and yet alone it went off the air 9 months after I was born, but I saw the "THEY STARTED ON SOAPS" specials on SoapNet and when I saw her segment, I thought she started in 1985 or 1986, I didn't think she appeared by 1984.
Did I see Jane Krakowski in there?? Wow she must have been just out of her teens at that point. Just like her friend Calista Flockhart, she got her start on a soap!

I agree. I think this was the most beautiful theme ending to Search.

Why did the PTB on the show replace the SFT beautiful, terrific piano music theme with this Kenny G crapola?

I had caught that similarity myself. I had wondered if anyone else had noticed that. It was very much Chuck Mangione. :)

I had the honor of interviewing Larry Haines ("Stu") a few years back. Click onto my page and you'll find it. It's in three parts.

This brings back SOOOOOO many memories for me. My mom isn't here anymore, but if she were, I would show her this and we could reminisce.

Yes, Jane Krakowski played Rebecca "TR" Kendall, a runaway that was adopted. She couldn't have been more than 16 when she started.
