Some of my favourites have to be the movie glory and of course gladiator there are to many good war movies out their really to say more although I would put War Horse up there too
Also one very good movie is Alamo....the one with Dennis Quad. Anything with John Wayne in it is pure piss. Even the updated True Grit is a 100 times better than the old one. Also both the old black and white All Quiet on the Western Front is very good but so is the modern re-make with the guy who played John Boy on the TV series The Waltons.
Best ten war movies: 1. Saving Pvt Ryan 2. Tora Tora Tora 3. A Bridge too Far 4. Battle of Britian 5. Das Boot 6. Full Metal Jacket 7. Band of Brothers 8. HBO Pacific 9. Master and Commander 10. Apacolypto. Although Apacolypto was not a war movie, I chose all ten based more on historical accuracy. Another great old movie was The Blue Max, about German piolets in WW1.
band of brothers is my #1 "movie" if you could call it that. 10 episodes over an hour long, its time consuming but a lot more engulfing than a short movie. very emotional and hours of action scenes that will leave you at the edge of your seat at the end of each episode. 10/10! if you have yet to see it, it is a MUST SEE!
The Seven Samurai, Capitaine Conan, Glory, Thin Red Line, Letters from Iwo Jima, Full Metal Jacket, Das Boot, Lawrence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now, and The Last of the Mohicans, not necessarily in that order. And a special Oscar for Best Battle Scene in a Movie Not Typically on Anybody's War Movie List goes to: The Sand Pebbles. No one beats Steve McQueen armed with an ax and a doughboy helmet. Check it out, children.
In the right hand margin is 'epic battles', 'WW2 movies' 'War movies' 'roman empire' Arn the Kight Templar'........................and 'Top 10 Wet, wild movie scenes'... Is this the SAT test where I'm supposed to choose the one that doesn't match?
@MrUnemployable -What if I said yes! lol -just disagree with them all it is all a matter of opinion anyway but have a good argument for your choice...
Sorry, but apart from the opening 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan it is not a great film. The rest of the movie is boringly formula led, like so many of Spielberg's movies. His latest "War Horse" has some great scenes but again the rest is formula -which is most movies but Spielberg's are boringly bad.
Yes Black Book (Zwart Boek) is a great film -because of it's story-line it reminds me of "Carve her name with pride" which was about one of the most brave woman agent's of the Second World War
I´m from the Netherlands too, and mine would be. 1 The longest day, 2 A bridge too far, We were Soldiers, 4 Enemy at the gates, 5 Band of Brothers, 6 Battle of the Bulge 7 were eagles dare, 8 Stalingrad, 9 Guns of navarone, 10 Zwartboek, Soldaat van oranje.
I'm from the Netherlands and, Mine would be: 1: Black Book (NL: Zwart Boek) 2: The Pianist 3: Pearl Harbor 4: Hitler the rise of the Evil 5: War Winter (NL: OorlogsWinter) 6: Valkyrie 2009 7: Soldier of Orange (NL: Soldaat van Oranje) 8: Inglourious Bastards 9: A bridge to far 10: Band of Brothers & The Pacific.
no war movie list can ever be complete without ''the great escape'' , has to be the the best war movie ever with an all star cast. also ''the desert fox'' and ''von ryan's express'' should be amongst the top ten war movies.
Braveheart? That is just wrong. That movie is grossly inaccurate both in events and the way things were supposed to look in that century. And it's mostly romance... And on top of that, there is Mel Gibson. There are many more better war movies. You just picked the most well known Hollywood production (and a couple of others so it does not look so bad).
I love the American Flag waving at the End. You would never think any other country fought the war only them. Where are Dambusters, 633 Squadron, Zulu. Das Boot, Schindler's List The Eagle Has Landed Many of which didn't have the big bucks of todays movies nor the special effects and CGI. But then again that's right the war didn't start until the good ol USA joined in and won it for every one else. It's a fact that the war actually started in 1939 and not the day after Pearl Harbour.
@rebelyell18601865 ... et vous même oubliez qu'il n'y a pas eu que de bons films de guerre anglo-saxons...: La 317e Section, Capitaine Conan, Le Crabe Tambour, etc... pour ne citer que quelques films français.... ;-)
@rebelyell18601865 -Yes and Lawrence of Arabia and Waterloo with Christopher Plummer as Wellington and Rod Steiger as Napoleon with the extras provided by 30,000 Soviet troops playing British and French troops with a special appearance of the Scottish guards playing themselves -NO CGI and a true great film the likes of we are not likely to see again being made.
10.Full Metal Jacket 9.Saving private Ryan 8.Pretty Village, Pretty Flame 7.Paths of Glory 6.Schindler's List 5.Life Is Beautiful 4.The Deer Hunter 3.Das Boot 2.Come and see(idi i smotri) 1.Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
@lordleage -oh come on I know you are young but seriously "300" can not be taken as a great film -a grate(as leading to the sewer) film maybe. @Fartsurmonde I don't know why everyones hating on 300 im not saying it's the best movie in the world im not saying it's the most historicaly accurate movie ever im just saying it is a brilliant war film, action from start to finish if you can't see that, then life sucks for you..
@lordleage -Look don't get upset -I respect your decision and comments but you should respect mine too and maybe the many comments against 300 tells you something. I grant you that 300 is an action film but there has to be more to a movie for it to be included in a greatest movie list. If you take the time to look at the movie lists people have given and at least try and see them on dvd or whatever you might just realise what people see to be a great movie.
@jesusfreak2795 The Hurt locker is a awesome movie but it is not a movie with much war scene's like fighting on the battle field if you know what i mean....
Very good list. I like the different times the movies were made and chosen. Only two cents I can throw in is that Gettysburg should have replaced Glory. Other than that, good work.

Downfall ,Cross of iron, Braveheart, El Alamein, Talvisota, Stalingrad, All quiet on the western front, Bridge over the river kwai, Dirty Dozen, Saving private ryan.
Cross of Iron , Gettysburg, Prvt Ryan, Black Hawk, bridge kwai, Apoco Now, Platoon, Lawrence of Arabia, Longest Day, Battle of the Bulge..... many many more very good movies
Apocalypse now, Stalingrad, Full Metal Jacket, Gettysburg, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Platoon, Lawrence of Arabia
Zulu A Bridge Too Far.Waterloo. Henry V Gettysburg Zulu Dawn Come See Me (Russian) Das Boot Stalingrad Enemy at the gates. Rota 9 The list goes on. There is no best ten. The Russians have some magnificent war movies.
I'm a war veteran and while this captures 10 movies of combat and war it can never encompass many of the other movies out there about war, combat and loss. I'm appreciative of the attempt to sum up 10 movies that capture all of the movies showcasing combat, wars, battles and the suffering of those that have lost their life and those that have suffered seeing their brethren perish. Thanks for your efforts and putting forth the video.
@juelzxxl LMFAO WORST LIST EVER, MOST OF THESE MOVIES ARENT EVEN WAR MOVIES FUCKTARD 12 year old cocksucker watch real war movies like saving privat ryan or platoon pussy
come on guys ,.. this guy has his own opinion about which war movies are on his list.. same like you do. It's not the end of your life if he didn't put your favorite movies on his list.
There are simply too many great war movies to declare any 10 the best. The Blue Max, Waterloo, Troy, Gettysburg, The Alamo, almost any Errol Flynn movie, Tora Tora Tora, the list is endless.
@MrMasterMind172 WHO THE FUCK CARES FAGOT IDC ABOUT SPELLING HAHAHHAH AND PEARL HARBOR IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES ABOUT WAR BUT I THINK LETTERS TO IWO JIMA IS THE BEST
Saving Private Ryan is definitely the best war movie ever made! Anyone who disagrees is retarded. Just face the facts that it owns the rest, Tom Hanks is the best actor of all time, and Spielberg possibly the greatest director.
Absolutely agree on Lawrence of Arabia. Dirty Dozen exceeded my level of disbelief almost immediately. The 300 is kidstuff, more cartoon then war movie. Some others to consider are "In Which We Serve". "The Story of GI Joe". and "The Duelist's". Patton was Great, but the all American equipment on both sides kind of bummed me out.
In the current political climate here, it's pointless to imagine HBO doing any war series it can't blame on Republicans. What a dilemma for Hollywood. Two decades of war and heroism, and they can't do much with it. Because they think the bad guys in all this are the same people they need to watch the show.
Most accurate cinematic experiences I have ever had of war were both of the HBO's mini-series Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Hurry up and reflect the war in North Africa, as it is pointless in harbouring hopes of HBO representing any theatre of WW2 that American forces were not directly present in (the war in the East needs more accurate cinematic representation, well as accurate as movies can get). Historians (not researchers) and directors should work together more- created HBO's success.
Yikes! Forgot Zulu which has to be in anybody's top ten, and near the top. So my personal list is revised. Put "Zulu" in and drop out "12 O'Clock High".
Agree with "All quiet on the Western Front" and "Saving Private Ryan" on both ends. Disagree with everything else. In no particular order my list would be "The Four Feathers" 1939 version "The Seven Samurai" "Battleground" "Das Boot" "Full Metal Jacket" "Gettysburg" "Last of the Mohican's" 1992 Version "12 O'Clock High"
shitty list these are the top 10 best war movies 1.) Glory 2.)Kingdom Of Heaven 3) Pearl Harbor 4.)Dead Presidents 5.) 300 6)Forest Gump 7.) War Of The Worlds 8.) The Patriot 9) Tuskegee Air Men 10.)Jar Head and not in that order all these movies are pure classics especially The Kingdom Of Heaven
Great movies all. And a very tough job to pick the top 10 out of all the movies out there. If those weren't in my top ten they would be in the top 20 for sure!
I suppose its all a question of what you want in a war movie. To me they should be exciting, historically accurate, and show both the glory and the pain that is war. On that basis I agree with the suggestions others have put forward of "Tora Tora Tora", "Gettysburg" and "Zulu". I'd also put forward "Waterloo" and "A Bridge too far". I'd take off "The Longest Day" (basically a series of vignettes) and "Braveheart" (too one-sided).
And braveheart...Ah to many

I'm a war veteran and while this captures 10 movies of combat and war it can never encompass many of the other movies out there about war, combat and loss. I'm appreciative of the attempt to sum up 10 movies that capture all of the movies showcasing combat, wars, battles and the suffering of those that have lost their life and those that have suffered seeing their brethren perish. Thanks for your efforts and putting forth the video.

662gurnard 1 month ago
In the current political climate here, it's pointless to imagine HBO doing any war series it can't blame on Republicans. What a dilemma for Hollywood. Two decades of war and heroism, and they can't do much with it. Because they think the bad guys in all this are the same people they need to watch the show.
662gurnard 1 month ago

662gurnard 1 month ago
Agree with "All quiet on the Western Front" and "Saving Private Ryan" on both ends. Disagree with everything else. In no particular order my list would be "The Four Feathers" 1939 version "The Seven Samurai" "Battleground" "Das Boot" "Full Metal Jacket" "Gettysburg" "Last of the Mohican's" 1992 Version "12 O'Clock High"
662gurnard 1 month ago

I suppose its all a question of what you want in a war movie. To me they should be exciting, historically accurate, and show both the glory and the pain that is war. On that basis I agree with the suggestions others have put forward of "Tora Tora Tora", "Gettysburg" and "Zulu". I'd also put forward "Waterloo" and "A Bridge too far". I'd take off "The Longest Day" (basically a series of vignettes) and "Braveheart" (too one-sided).
